SOLEMNITY of JESUS CHRIST KING of the UNIVERSE On Sunday, November 25th, we celebrate the Feast of the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (Feast of Christ the King). This feast was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925. The 1920s saw a rise in secularism, in which people increasingly lived their lives as if God did not exist. Dictatorships flourished; many were taken by these earthly leaders. Many Christians (including Catholics) began to doubt the authority and existence of Christ and to question the power of the Church to continue Christ’s authority. Pope Pius XI felt that a feast celebrating the kingship of Christ over all humanity would be especially appropriate at this time when respect for Christ and for the Church was declining rapidly. The need for such a feast continues to exist in our world today, as the problems observed by Pope Pius XI have not vanished but appear instead to have worsened. The embrace of individualism in today’s society moves Jesus from the central role He is meant to occupy in the lives of Christians. The Feast of the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe allows us to reaffirm and refocus our faith and respect in the kingship of Jesus just as it did when it was first established. The celebration of the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe was moved from the last Sunday in October to the final Sunday of Ordinary Time, the Sunday before Advent. It is fitting to celebrate Christ’s kingship right before Advent, when we liturgically prepare for the arrival of the promised Messiah. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of the infant, we also meditate on the Second and Final coming of Christ the King.
SCRIPTURAL REFLECTION November 25, 2018
“Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom does not belong to this world.’” (John 18:36) How often do we put all our time and energy into building a kingdom here on earth, forgetting that life here is short? The real kingdom is in the next life. Yet, how much time and energy do we invest in working for that eternal kingdom?
Live in the kingdom NOW! PUT JESUS FIRST! Love, pray, serve and you will live with God
forever in heaven!

Act of Dedication of the Human Race to Jesus Christ King*
Most Sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look down upon us humbly prostrate before You.
We are Yours, and Yours we wish to be; but to be more surely united with You,
behold each one of us freely consecrates himself today to Your Most Sacred Heart.
Many indeed have never known You; many, too, despising Your precepts, have rejected You.
Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to Your Sacred Heart.
Be King, O Lord, not only of the faithful who have never forsaken You, but also of
the prodigal children who have abandoned You; grant that they may quickly return to their Father's house,
lest they die of wretchedness and hunger. Be King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions,
or whom discord keeps aloof, and call them back to the harbor of truth and the unity of faith,
so that soon there may be but one flock and one Shepherd. Grant, O Lord, to Your Church
assurance of freedom and immunity from harm; give tranquility of order to all nations;
make the earth resound from pole to pole with one cry: Praise to the Divine Heart that wrought our salvation;
to it be Glory and Honor forever. Amen. * A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful, who piously recite the Act of Dedication of the Human Race to Jesus Christ King. A plenary indulgence is granted, if it is recited publicly on the feast of our Lord Jesus Christ King. Prayer Source: Enchiridion of Indulgences,6/29/68

ADVENT IS COMING! The Friday after Thanksgiving is known as “Black Friday” which for many marks the time to begin preparation for their ‘Christmas’. Much of this preparation focuses on shopping for presents, deciding what presents they may want, preparing menus, going to parties, decorating the house/office, listening to Christmas carols, drinking eggnog or an adult beverage of choice a little more often, etc… It is a crazy, busy time of the year. In many ways the busiest…and in many ways fun! However, for Catholics and many Christians in general, the First Sunday in Advent (December 2nd) is the start of the Church’s preparation for the celebration of Christmas. The beginning of a new liturgical year, Advent (from, “advenire” in Latin or “to come to”) is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebrations of Christmas. The Advent Season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming in glory at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas Day. The final days of Advent, from December 17th to December 24th, focus more intently on our preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of our Lord. Our Advent preparation is challenged by the Black Friday mentality in many ways because our focus is on the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of Christ our Savior in glory! This preparation calls us to the reading of Scripture, to quiet reflection and meditation, to reach out to those in need, and to examine our lives, so as to be willing to let the mystery of the Incarnation and the expectation of the Second Coming of Christ change our lives. Let us, as a parish family, take advantage of this great opportunity to grow in our faith by entering into this Advent Season with our hearts focused on God. Our Parish is offering many opportunities this Advent to prepare for Christmas...to serve, to pray, to assist. O Come O Come Emmanual!

PRAY DAILY for the HOLY SOULS of PURGATORY The Catholic Church dedicates November to praying for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. They cannot pray for themselves or do anything to hasten their entrance into heaven, but we can pray for them as an act of charity. According to tradition, our Lord promised Saint Gertrude that 1000 souls would be released from Purgatory each time we devoutly pray: Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses
said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the universal church, for those in my own home and within my family. Amen
