Summer School Seamless Breakfast & Lunch
ProgramReaching more hungry children:
The Seamless Summer Food Program. Ensuring that children have access to
nutritious meals throughout the year is an important policy concern.
The Seamless Summer Food Program is a federal initiative to help school food
authorities reach a larger number of hungry children in low-income areas during the
summer months when many school lunch and school breakfast programs stop
operating. The program is financed by the federal government through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and
Nutrition Service.

The Fiscal ReportLocal Voters Once Again
Overwhelmingly Support K-14 Bonds
The elections held throughout California on June 7, 2016, not only provided the electorate with a voice in who would
eventually represent them in local, state, and federal offices, but also provided them with another opportunity to support local
k-14 bond and tax measures for the funding of facilities projects and
instructional programs. Continuing the pattern of recent years,
voters overwhelmingly showed their support for k-14 districts by passing 86%
of the General Obligation (GO) Bond measures and 100% of both the Schools Facility Improvement District (SFID) and
parcel tax measures on the ballot. There were a total of 53 local measures on
ballots across California. Of the 44 GO Bond measures, totaling $5.823 billion, 38
of them passed for a total of $5.089 billion. Both of the SFID measures, totaling $358.6 million, passed, as did all seven parcel tax
measures. We congratulate all of the school and community college districts that passed local tax measures. And we thank California voters who, during both
good times and bad, recognize the importance of supporting our children and
their education. -Brianna Garcia & Carmen Thompson

BEYOND POTENTIAL
The person not determined to cultivate the habit of thinking misses the greatest pleasure in life. (Thomas Edison paraphrased
Every teacher possesses the profound privilege of encouraging students to reach, some say, their potential, but I contend to achieve beyond their potential. Potential is the possible or the probable. Yes, we have the privilege of opening a panorama of what is beyond the possible, beyond the probable! Put another way, I have heard expressed (paraphrased),
Why shoot for the stars when galaxies beckon?
At the end of May, I attended graduations of two former SUSD students who aspired beyond their potential: Ms. Erika Arreola, (2013) and Mr. Fabián Alberto (2004). While here, Erika transformed from an English learner who did not know how to say “no” in English (she says) to one who passed the CAHSEE and graduated – all within two years. Having pursued beyond the probable and now graduated Magna cum Laude from Hartnell College, still an English Learner, she will attend CSUMB in the fall as a communications student.
Fabián, a English learner, migrant child who at four years old knelt in the fields beside his mom picking garlic, and a K-12 SUSD student, graduated from UC Davis School of Medicine as Fabián Alberto,
M.D. Though today a general surgeon who already has assisted in surgeries and who will begin his residency in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dr. Alberto as a child had no doctor role model. Yet, when a child, in his soul he knew that he would be a doctor.
Both acknowledge their teachers as integral influences in their achievements, as Fabián says, “being the village.” Let us keep promoting our students beyond their potential to pursue the seeming impossible. Congratulations, to all JK-12 students reaching beyond potential!
