We provide the finest basic trainingof any military service in the world. I assure you that their first experiencewith the United States Army will be both challenging and rewarding.

We who are privileged to participate in preparing young men and women tobe good soldiers and good citizens take' our obligations very seriously. Thefuture of the United States Army is represented by the young peopl e entrustedto us for their basic training.

Basic training is a very intense experience. These young men and womeQdiscover quickly that it is p-hysieally, mentally, and emotionally d,emanding.For all new soldiers the shock of -leaving famtlia,r st!Jrr-oundin.gs,. an.d. les-ing· ...persona1 independence causes Significant stress. Your sql dter may become homesickfor a whi 1e, might resent ha vi ng to accept 'the authority of hi s/her dri 11sergeants, and will dislike getting up early. Yo~r soldier may be uncomfortableabout lOSing his or her identity in what is perceived to be a large, impersonalorganization that does not care about individuals. I hasten to point out thatthe Army cares very much about individual soldiers, but it will take some time

Visitation normally is allowed on Sundays after the third week of training.Please coordinate your visits telephonically with the unit in advance to insurethe availability of your soldier and understand that trainees are not author tzedto leave the battalion headquar-ters lobby. Scheduled training must necessarf lytake priority over visitation. In the event that an immediate family emergencyarises which requires your loved one+s presence at home, please contact yourlocal chapter of the American Red Cross. The Red Cross will validate therequirement for emergency leave and coordinate with the appropriate Fort Jacksonpersonnel to expedite the soldierls return home.

Another letter will be. sent toyou about the fifth week of training containing more specific. informationconcerning graduation .. Please wrHe to your soldier and have him/her' ce'l l youa week prior to graduation for any changes and to ensure that they have metall the graduation reqUirements.
