Solar power
• We have used solar power for thousands of years.
• We use the sun for drying clothes or making salt or other things.
• Solar power comes from the Sun.
Sun’s energy
• Just a tiny fraction of the sun’s energy that hits the Earth is enough to meet all our power needs many times over.
• We use solar panels to turn sunlight into electricity.
disadvantages
• Sunlight is all over the place so you’ll need lots and lots of panels to make a useful amount of energy.
• Only areas of the world with lots of sunlight are suitable for solar power generation.
disadvantages
• It cost lots and lots and lots of money when you are putting them up
advantages
• There is a really really good thing about solar power - it doesn't harm the atmosphere
advantages
• when they’re up they cost nothing, you barely need to look at them and they will last
• Solar power is renewable - it can’t run out unless the sun blows up
Is it the answer?
It’s pretty unlikely that solar power is going to be the answer but you can have a little bit of lots of things. Solar power is often an excellent extra to use with other renewable sources
Solar power
• If you want to use Solar power in Shetland it will not be a good idea because we don’t have enough sun.
