● Thermal Pyranometers – These are also knownas solarimeters and typically consist of a blackmetal plate absorber surface below twohemispherical glass domes in a white metalhousing.
● Solar irradiance warms up the metal plate inproportion to its intensity
● Silicon Sensors – These are cheaper thanpyranometers and consist of a PV cell, oftenusing crystalline silicon.
● The current delivered is proportional to theirradiance.
● Well maintained land-based sensors canmeasure the solar resource with a relativeaccuracy of 3-5%.

● India Meteorological Department data from 23field stations of the radiation network,measured from 1986.
● NASA’s Surface Meteorology and SolarEnergy data set. This holds satellite – derivedmonthly data for a grid of 1°x1° covering theglobe from 1984.
● The METEONORM global climatologicaldatabase and synthetic weather generator.This contains a database of ground stationmeasurements of irradiation and temperature.In cases where a site is over 20 km from thenearest measurement station.
● Satellite-derived geospatial solar data productsfrom the United States-based NREL. Annualaverage DNI and GHI, latitude tilt, and diffusedata are available at 10 km resolution for India,

Typical Horizontal Solar Irradiation in India
The annual mean GHI in Chennai is 2,021 kWh/m2. By optimally-orientating a fixed tilt plant, theyearly sum of global irradiation may be increased to 2,048 kWh/m2. Based on this resource, a 1MWp plant with a PR of 80% will give an AC yield of 1,638 MWh.

Where there is significant uncertainty in the data sources, a short term data monitoring campaignmay be considered. Short term monitoring (ideally up to one year in duration) may be used tocalibrate long term satellite-derived data and increase the confidence in the long term energyyield prediction.
