DOES SOLAR LIGHTING WORK? A properly designed solar LED lighting system will work under all environmental conditions and provide years of reliable, worry free operation only requiring infrequent battery changes typically every 5 to 7 years. Solar lighting systems require an exacting combination of Solar Panels, Batteries, Luminaires, Control Electronics and the use of high quality mounting components, all chosen to work not only on the day of installation but for the life of the system. PQI sources the highest quality solar panels from recognized industry leaders for use in MaxSUN® systems. Our ruggedised, weather resistant solar panels are tested to IEC standards for reliability and, in addition to the 5 year PQI warranty, solar panel power output is warranted by the manufacturer for 20 years.

PQI uses satellite and ground based solar irradiation data to determine the appropriate size of panel for your application’s lighting requirements and Sun resources in your location. We take into account worst case weather conditions and system losses due to wiring, control electronics and batteries. As solar panel output depreciates, the end of life output of the panels has been accounted for in the system’s design calculations.

BATTERIES

Only the highest quality USA made AGM deep cycle batteries are used in MaxSUN® systems. They are fused, maintenance-free and provide superior performance in Northern climate applications, lasting twice as long as typical quality AGM batteries.

Days of Storage is the number of days the system can operate with almost no sunlight. Our conservative calculations take into account reduced capacity due to temperature, end of life battery capacity versus initial capacity and end of charge reserve to determine battery sizes. In areas that experience regular snow coverage, ProQuip recommends 2 to 3 days of additional storage capacity to allow for snow shedding from the panels.

Our battery sizing methods and system control electronics ensure that batteries will typically last 5 to 7 years and that the lights are always on when needed.

LUMINAIRES

Our luminaires incorporate PQI designed or selected partner light engines. These light engines are implemented with LEDs from leading technology vendors including Philips Lumileds, Cree and Nichia. We drive our LEDS below the max rated values to ensure long life, > 50,000hrs, and low lumen depreciation.

PQI offers a range of luminaires with types 2, 3 and 5 distributions to maximize light levels where they are needed and reduce light trespass. MaxSUN® light fixtures and light engines are independently tested by recognised labs to confirm optical performance using standards including IESNA LM-79.

PQI can perform a lighting analysis to ensure that your needs and specifications are met using appropriate light loss factors.

LED DRIVER

The PQI designed PQSMART® LED Driver supplies regulated power to our LED light engines and features high efficiency, low power draw and protection for reverse connections, shorts and EMI events. Full potting of the circuitry for environmental protection and the elimination of electrolytic capacitors in the design ensures long life. The PQSMART® interfaces directly with the PQMAX® Charge and Lighting Controller.

POLES, ENCLOSURES & MOUNTS

PQI uses locally sourced, heavy duty utility poles. These poles are designed and manufactured to AASHTO standards, ensuring that the effective projected area (EPA) and weight of the solar panels, battery box, luminaires and local wind conditions are accounted for.

Enclosures are NEMA 3R rated, heavy duty, powder coated aluminum to resist corrosion and are lockable.

Our solar panel mounts are constructed from aluminum and stainless steel. Standard mounts are designed to withstand up to 140kph (90mph) wind loading.

CHARGE AND LIGHTING CONTROLLER

The heart of the MaxSUN® system is the PQMAX® high performance Charge and Light Controller, the smartest, most versatile solar lighting controller available, allowing users to set timing, light-levels and other features via its USB interface. The PQMAX® dynamically manages energy flow according to environmental conditions ensuring reliable lighting operation and long battery life. It features:

• Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) to extract up to 40% more energy from solar panels

• Wide range, high efficiency conversion allows use of large, reliable, high volume utility style panels

• Multiple protection levels: reverse panel, reverse battery, load short circuit, EMI and low battery cutoff

• Built-in real time data logging records all critical system parameters for a 4 week period

• Programmable lighting profiles control light levels in 15 minute increments

• Real time status readout on alphanumeric display

• Fully programmable light levels versus battery storage level and temperature to extend Days of Storage

AUTOMATIC DIMMING

Recognizing that worst case solar resources occur infre-quently, solar lighting systems will reduce light output as the battery level drops. Many systems reduce all output levels based on battery voltage alone or have simple high/low settings.

MaxSUN®’s sophisticated system monitors the battery volt-age and temperature to accurately determine battery stor-age and independently adjusts the peak lighting level and dimmed lighting level to ensure minimum security levels are maintained.

PROFILES In many lighting applications, peak light levels are only required for part of the evening. For the rest of the night, a lower security level output is sufficient. Implementing program-mable off-peak lighting profiles reduces system costs such as early battery replacements and minimizes light pollution.
