proposals for dealing with an estimated 100 illegal properties within the municipality.

The revised proposals, which take the form of municipal ordinances, were made available to the public on the 6th of August and now include detailed maps showing how each property will be dealt with under the terms of the recent Decree (2/2012) to regularize houses in Andalucía.

An AUAN spokesperson said that they were ‘satisfied’ with the outcome ‘even though it proved quite a struggle to obtain the revised documents during the summer holiday period. In April, when the original documents were published, we were very concerned that many anxious homeowners were being encouraged to spend thousands of Euros to apply for paperwork that is only useful if your property is to be excluded from the town plan. We simply wanted more information to be made available so that people could make informed decisions. We are therefore pleased to report that this information is now available’.

The latest documents indicate that the neighbourhoods of Los Llanos and Los Angeles are proposed for inclusion within the town plan (PGOU) as urban settlements (asentamientos) and a further nine areas of the municipality including hamlets such as Los Guerreros and Barranco del Infierno are proposed for inclusion as rural settlements

(habitats rurales). If the regional government accepts the proposals, illegal properties within these areas would eventually be legalised via the regular planning processes.

Areas not specifically earmarked for inclusion within the town plan are classified as outside of the town plan or ‘fuera de ordenacion’. Newer properties requiring paperwork and/or access to services may need to apply to be classified as ‘assimilated’ as ‘fuera de ordenacion’. The application process and associated costs are more fully described within the new ordinances.

‘The proposal is not without its challenges’ continued AUAN’s spokesperson. ‘For example, the plan acknowledges that Los Angles is partially impacted by protected land due to its proximity to the local cemetery and we can see that some houses that are excluded from the plan are on ‘parcelaciones urbanisticas’, a planning issue which occurs when rustic land is illegally divided into building plots’ ‘Nevertheless, we have a clearer picture and the town hall should have a decision from the regional government within months’, AUAN’s spokesperson concluded.

Andalucian beaches usually maintain a state of adequate sanitation. This is stated in a report for the first fortnight of September, and is based on the analysis conducted on the beaches surveyed by the Secretaría General de Salud Pública, Inclusión Social y Calidad de Vida (General Secretariat of Health, Social Inclusion and Quality of Life).

A total of 342 sampling points in 257 beaches in 61 municipalities have been monitored. Water samples were analyzed to determine the various parameters required by current legislation, such as microbiological, transparency, colour, mineral oils, and persistent presence of foam floating solids.

By province, the bathing water of the 75 beaches of Almeria, the 53 of Cadiz, Granada’s 29, 18 of Huelva 82 of Malaga are within the standards set. However, incidents have been detected in some beaches of Almeria, Cadiz, Huelva and Malaga.

The Playa Piedra Villazar (Mojácar) has exceeded microbiological parameters, and the Playa de El Rinconcillo (Cádiz) reported abundant jellyfish. The Playa de Isla Canela (Ayamonte) recorded decaying algae, and the Playa de Fuengirola and those of the Calas Occidentales de Nerja, both in the province of Málaga, reported exceeding the microbiological parameters.

road at Venta Ratonera, Fiñana.It appears that he hit a wall and was killed instantly. The Guardia Civil are investigating the circumstances.

veraA man, identified as ACO, suffered serious injuries after falling from the roof of a hotel

in Vera. The man, a foreign national, was admitted to the Hospital de La Inmaculada in Huércal Overa with serious injuries after falling on to an inner courtyard from the roof of a hotel in Puerto Rey. The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation.

media at the local Junta headquarters to request the Junta de Andalucía to resume work on the Autovía del Almanzora.

At the same time they have denounced the discrimination by the Junta against the development of infrastructure in this region.

The Presidenta Local of the PP of Baza, María José Martín, said that ‘the PSOE pledged to run 438 km of highways in the province of Granada, but have only executed 51 km. The Autovía de La Almanzora (Baza-Huercal Overa), which makes possible a quick connection via the A-92 to the Corredor Mediterráneo (A-7), and which would benefit 70,000 inhabitants and 28 municipalities, is no more than broken promises.’

She continued ‘Of the first phase of the project (41.5 km long) only 13.6 km. has been implemented. The second phase (Purchena-Baza) with a length of 43 km. and a budget of 263 million euros has been completely forgotten about, despite a feasibility study and preliminary construction, maintenance, and operation which provided funding through public-private co-operation, and which would generate more than 3,000 jobs in the region.’

olula del rioTwo residents of Olula have been arrested for a hit and run involving a cyclist.

Officers from the Guardia Civil of the Destacamento de Tráfico de Vera (Almería), arrested L.O.Y.B, 47 and B.L.C.C, 52, for failure to render aid, also a crime against road safety and injury by negligence.

The arrests are the result of an investigation by the Guardia Civil into a traffic accident during the mid-afternoon at kilometre 1’100 on the AL-6102, the Camino de Aguamarga.

The cyclist, a 45 year old man from Olula, was run over by a car and seriously injured. The occupants of the car fled the scene, leaving the vehicle at the scene, without offering assistance or alerting the Emergency Services.

The Guardia Civil, an Ambulance and medical personnel arrived on the scene quickly and attended the wounded man, who was transferred to a nearby hospital.

The Guardia investigated the ownership of the car, which was registered to a company in Albox. They then interviewed local witnesses and collected abundant information about the accident, which was decisive in determining responsibility.

Their investigations showed that L.O.Y.B. was driving the vehicle involved in the incident, and that his close friend, B.L.C.C. was a passenger at the time.

The Supreme Court in Madrid has closed the criminal investigation into the Spanair accident at Barajas airport on August 20th 2008, ruling that the problems leading up the crash were not caused by the mechanics responsible for the plane, but were

the result of “mistakes” by the pilots.

The case against the two Spanair mechanics - Felipe García and José Antonio Viñuelas - who had been charged with 154 counts of involuntary manslaughter and 18 counts of causing injury, has therefore been dropped, despite the fact that many questions remain unanswered.

The court has determined that “the crew lost control of the aircraft as a result of a stall immediately after take-off, because they did not have the correct plane configuration for take-off (by not deploying the flaps and slats, following a series of errors and omissions), coupled with the absence of any warning of the incorrect configuration. The crew did not recognize the indications of stall, and did not correct the situation after take-off, and – by momentarily retarding the engine power and increasing the pitch angle – brought about a deterioration in the flight condition. The crew did not detect the configuration error because they did not properly use the checklists to select and check the position of the flaps and slats during flight preparation”.

In addition, there have been reports that malware which had infected the airline’s central computer system resulted in a failure to raise an alarm over multiple problems with the plane. An internal report issued by the airline revealed that their central computer system used to monitor technical problems with the aircraft was infected with malware and may have prevented the detection of technical problems with the aircraft. A judge has ordered Spanair to provide all of the computer’s logs from the days before and after the crash.

against the airport director and the safety officer on duty that day, alleging that they had failed to respond correctly to the catastrophe. This complaint was rejected on the basis that there was proof that within one minute of the crash occurring, numerous emergency vehicles were already on their way to the scene.

154 passengers and crew (including the pilots) were killed when flight JK 5022 crashed on take-off after the catalogue of errors by crew members. There were 18 survivors.

Families of the people who lost their lives in the crash gathered at Terminal 2 at Barajas airport on Monday, where an olive tree and a plaque bearing the names of the dead have been erected in remembrance.

SPAIN IS DIGGING IN ITS hEELS AGAINST FUrThEr AUSTErITy AS PrOTESTS SWEEP ThE cOUNTry AND mOUNTING TENSIONS WITh

cATALAN NATIONALISTS ThrEATEN TO SPLIT ThE cOUNTryIn an almost unique demonstration of

optimism in the current climate, Spanish travel agencies have predicted that 2012 will close with a 5% increase in tourism.

The latest figures are not potentially biased government predictions, but rather the tourism sector’s own statistics, showing an estimated increase of between 4% and 6% in terms of tourists visiting the country and turnover in for the current year.

The data has been published by the National Union of Travel Agencies (UNAV), whose president, José Luis Prieto, is predicting an increase of roughly 6% in visitor numbers and turnover by the end of December, although he did point out that some 4,000 travel agencies had been forced to close since the recession began in 2008.

“There was a tremendous saturation in the market” and it was “not logical for us to have

twice as many travel agencies as Germany; it wasn’t a country for 8,000 agencies”, explicained Prieto.

The sector “has been cleaned up and is now adapting supply to demand”, Prieto went on, adding that vacational tourism is the “most affected” by the recession.

The president of UNAV said he understood that “many people had travelled within Spain rather than overseas this year”, and that there had been a notable increase in the number of people taking advantage of last-minute offers.

Prieto explained that purchases via on-line travel agencies had increased by 10% so far this year, and that in Spain, 95% of business travel was now booked in this way, whereas the number of people booking holidays via travel agencies “had increased by four or five times over the past 20 years”

Finance minister Luis de Guindos (pictured) ruled out further fiscal cuts needed to qualify for a eurozone rescue, leaving it unclear whether the European Central Bank can activate Europe’s grand plan to stabilise markets, according to a report in the Telegraph.

Mr de Guindos said over the weekend that Madrid’s €100bn (£81bn) austerity measures are “sufficient” to meet a deficit ceiling of 6.3pc of GDP this year, although it is an open secret that Spain will miss its target.

Germany’s parliament is unlikely to approve any rescue without deeper cuts, but further austerity risks pushing Spain into civil conflict. Tens of thousands marched in Madrid at the weekend to protest against drastic cuts, including a 7pc cut in public wages. A man set fire to himself in Portugal, where clashes

His claims were badly undercut by Nobel economist Joe Stiglitz, who told a Spanish forum that German austerity medicine is “utterly misguided” and will push Spain deeper into a downward spiral. It would be “suicidal” for Spain to accept a rescue if it involved more fiscal tightening, he said.

Spain’s attempt to resist a rescue until forced by markets leaves the eurozone in an impasse. The ECB cannot purchase Spanish bonds until Spain formally requests help from the bail-out fund and signs a “memorandum” ceding fiscal sovereignty.

Mr de Guindos called on the eurozone to fulfil its pledge to recapitalise the Spanish lenders directly with ESM funds to take the burden off the Spanish state, but this too is in limbo.

Eurozone finance ministers were deeply at odds on Saturday over plans for a banking supervisor, with little chance of a deal ahead. Germany will not let the ESM recapitalise banks until the supervisor is in place.

veteran communiSt leader Santiago

carrillo dieS Santiago Carrillo, the leader of the Spanish Communist Party between 1960 and 1982, died at his home in Madrid on Tuesday afternoon at the age of 97.

The veteran activist, who was Spain’s last surviving public figure to have taken part in the civil war, had been admitted to hospital in July due to blood circulation problems but was later discharged.

Although he lived in exile for decades, mostly in France, Carrillo was a central figure in Spanish politics during much of the tumultuous 20th Century and a key player in the difficult transition to democracy in the late 1970s after dictator Francisco Franco died.

Carrillo put his longevity down to continued active participation in Spanish political life, writing essays and making contributions to public seminars and a weekly nationwide radio debate well into his 90s.

The son of a union organiser, Carrillo’s activism began in 1931, when, at the age of 15, he began reporting for the Socialist Party newspaper and joined crowds to cheer King Alfonso XIII fleeing to exile and the declaration of Spain’s Second Republic.

In 1936 he joined the army to defend the Republic from a military revolt which turned into a bloody civil war lasting almost

three years and ended up installing Franco as dictator.

After Franco’s forces won in 1939 with the help of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, Carrillo went into exile, from where he helped organise resistance to the dictatorship.

In 1960 he became general secretary of the Spanish Communist Party (PCE), and began to draw criticism from the Franco regime for his alleged role in the 1936 massacre of several thousand supporters of the military revolt in Paracuellos on the outskirts of Madrid, for which far-right Spaniards blame Carrillo to this day.

Carrillo always protested his innocence in the Paracuellos affair, saying he had little influence as a young and minor official and had no idea what was happening in a chaotic and lawless city under siege. An estimated 50,000 Spanish civilians were killed in the Republican rearguard, and another 150,000 behind Franco’s lines in what has come to be known as the “Spanish holocaust”.

Carrillo had to wait until after Franco’s death in 1975 to return to Spain. In 1977 he became a member of parliament in the first elections held in Spain since 1936, but the PCE did poorly and he was expelled from the party in 1982.

‘incidentS’ launched The Spanish state ombudswoman (Defensora del Pueblo),

Soledad Becerril, has issued a memo to the National Air Safety Agency (Aesa) asking it to open an official investigation into the recent spate of incidents that have occurred on Ryanair flights, on the understanding that they could well breach air safety regulations and passengers’ rights.

In her memo, the ombudswoman, points out that 1,201 incidents involving the Irish airline were reported in the first six months of the year, and similar incidents have continued to occur throughout July and August.

For its part, the airline cites discrimination by the Spanish authorities and claims that all other airlines have a similar number of incidents and complaints against them.

According to the office of the ombudswoman, the fines amounting to over 2.3 million euros imposed on Ryanair since 2007 have not led to any significant changes in the airline’s controversial policies.

Becerril underlined the fact that the Ministry of Public Works, to whom Aesa reports, ordered a study into possible malpractice within the airline back in July, and confirmed that she had requested a copy of the report.

She has also requested information about measures already taken or currently in the pipeline, and in the case of malpractice, will be referring the issue to the Irish government, who is responsible for issuing, renewing or withdrawing Ryanair’s licence.

The ombudswoman has also requested a comparison between the number of complaints made against other airlines and those made against Ryanair.

Driving along a sunlit road along Gibraltar’s western slopes, a tourist stops by one of the city’s top attractions - St Michael’s Cave - and consults his travel guide. Soon he won’t need a book to learn more about this tiny British overseas territory in the Mediterranean, just south of Spain.

Following the lead of the UK town of Monmouth, Gibraltar is aiming to spill the content of the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia into the real world, according to a report by BBC.

To do this, it is equipping Gibraltar’s tourist attractions with QR codes - “quick response” barcodes that can be scanned with a mobile phone.

These black-and-white pixelated images have been around for more than two decades but have started to gain mainstream acceptance only in the past few years, appearing on everything from walls and billboards to newspapers and detergent packs.

As well as other technologies such as near-field communication tags (NFC) and augmented reality (AR) apps, they give mobile phone users information about a particular object. QR codes store text, phone numbers, email addresses and calendar events, and once scanned, create links to websites or generate some interactive content on your smartphone’s screen.

Tourism is a big part of Gibraltar’s economy, with more than 11 million visitors spending £280m last year, and the authorities are keen to seize any opportunity to increase revenue.

The QR codes take users directly to a Wikipedia page of the relevant tourist attraction, says Clive Finlayson of the Gibraltar Museum.

“Gibraltar is a multi-layered cake of historical events, starting with the Neanderthals of 50,000 years ago through to modern humans,” he says. “Our own caving unit has now catalogued over 200 caves in Rock, with many being rich in archaeology but inaccessible to most people. Here we have another way of getting all this information across to the world.”

Some analysts have been saying that other technologies such as NFC, which lets you get information wirelessly just by waving your phone in front of the chip, may eventually replace QR. But QR supporters argue that NFC is not quite there yet - it is expensive to create tags, and for now, not many phones can scan them.

QR codes are free to create, cheap to install and nearly all modern smartphones have apps that can read them. Augmented reality apps are also a potential threat - they allow information to appear on your handset’s screen simply by pointing the phone towards an object of interest. Google Glass headset could even take this one step further, and make information appear right in front of the user’s eyes.

But QR is far from being dead - and recent moves by the electronic giants Apple and Microsoft could give it a push. The technology will be integrated into Apple’s Passbook ticket/coupon wallet service, available on the forthcoming iOS6 operating system. It will allow users to get into a cinema, check in for a flight, or redeem a coupon via their phone. Microsoft has recently signed a licensing agreement with NeoMedia, one of the pioneers in the mobile barcodes field, to acquire all of the firm’s QR code patents.

can be taken to a page in Portuguese, a Turk to one in Turkish and so on, says Roger Bamkin, a consultant to the Gibraltar government and a volunteer from Wikimedia UK, the charity that supports the online encyclopaedia.

“By scanning QR codes around them, tourists will be to able to find out about the place they are visiting in their own language, with the description written by a volunteer speaking that language,” he says.

Volunteers have been producing up to 20 articles a day in various languages, and Mr Bamkin has been in Gibraltar this week seeking more people to contribute photos, maps and information on the territory’s history.

But once all the landmarks are equipped with codes and all the articles are written, other factors need to be dealt with for the project to take off.

Roaming charges may deter visitors from connecting to the web - and the government of Gibraltar says it is considering the possibility of free wi-fi.

Also, tourists should be familiar with QR codes and be willing to use them. Although

people may be used to seeing them, not many in the Western world actually scan them.

On the other hand, in Japan and South Korea many use them on a daily basis.

Tesco Korea lets consumers shop in a virtual supermarket while standing on a subway platform. They scan images of groceries with a QR code reader and buy them with a click.

But Gibraltarpedia organisers say that they realise QR codes may be replaced by other technology - just as DVDs replaced CDs, says Mr Bamkin.

However, he believes that the project will be a success - and be it QR, NFC or any other future tech, Wikipedia is aiming to bridge online and offline worlds.

“Projects like Gibraltarpedia are a test of our mission,” says Mr Bamkin, adding that the next target is expansion into northern Africa.

“Africans have a great need of free information - there are many more Wikipedia articles in the UK or France than there are in Morocco, Algeria, or Mali.”

headlines across the world after attempting a DIY restoration that left the 19th century fresco of Christ at her local church in Borja resembling a monkey.

The altered image of Ecce Homo – Behold the Man – became an internet sensation and sent thousands of curious sightseers to the Sanctuario de Misericordia to laugh at her handiwork.

Authorities threatened to sue Mrs Gimenez for her unauthorised attempt, which she insisted had been carried out with only good intentions because the painting was in need of repair.

But popularity for the modified masterpiece grew with even budget airline Ryanair offering cheap deals to nearby Zaragoza airport encouraging “pilgrims” to visit the work that was quickly dubbed “Ecce Mono” – Behold the Monkey.

An internet petition to keep the repair job garnered widespread support and seizing an opportunity to swell its coffers, the church began levying a 4 euro (£3) entrance fee on visitors, earning 2,000 euros in the first four days.

Lawyers acting for Mrs Gimenez now insist she should be entitled to a cut of the profits, which she wants to go towards a charity of her choice.

“She just wants the church to conform to the law,” lawyer Enrique Trebolle said. “If this means economic compensation she wants it to be for charitable purposes”.

Her lawyer added that she would want any money made from the painting to go towards Muscular atrophy charities, because her son suffers from the condition.

The image was painted by Elias Garcia Martinez, a local artist, more than a century ago, but had recently suffered surface damage due to damp.

Family of the original artist have called for the image of Christ with a crown of thorns to be restored to its former glory and have said they will seek legal action against Mrs Gimenez for “destroying” the work.

The Sancti Spiritus Hospital Foundation, which owns the Sanctuario de Misericordia, has also retained lawyers to defend the

action and retain their right to proceeds from visitors to the church.

However, the latest update on the story has revealed that Giménez has offered to help official art restorers repair the painting of the Ecce Homo she ‘damaged’.

A preliminary study of the fresco, which is on a wall in the Cathedral of Borja (Zaragoza), has shown that the oils used by the 81-year-old art-lover have not penetrated the stone and can therefore be easily peeled off to reveal the original painting underneath.

Experts say that as Cecilia did not know enough about art restoration, she would have been unaware of the type of paints and chemicals that should be used to soak into the wall and ensure the colour takes hold, becoming permanent.

Cecilia, who ‘restored’ the badly-deteriorated picture voluntarily and of her own free will, says she has often repaired other paintings in the Cathedral with the full knowledge of the vicar, as a favour. But the vicar denies this is the case.

However, Cecilia’s work – which she said was unfinished when the story hit the headlines – has caused such a furore around the world that tourists have been turning up in thousands to see it.

The small market town of Borja has never seen so many tourists, say restaurant and café owners, who claim they have been constantly busy and have had to put extra tables outside to cater for the visitors.

An internet campaign has been calling for the ‘new’ version of the painting to be left as it is. The image is now behind a screen and cordoned off to prevent people from touching it.

As yet, Borja council has not confirmed what it intends to do with the painting, and it is not known whether the art restorers who have been studying the work will take up Cecilia’s offer of help. But they have concluded it will be impossible to peel off the ‘new’ Ecce Homo and keep it intact to display elsewhere in the Cathedral, as was originally considered.

On Friday 5th October the Computer Club will be holding another of their popular free Open Days, at Rumores in Albox, both to meet new interested people and as an introduction to a new series of “Beginners Basics” lessons. Open days offer an opportunity to meet the club members and find out what to expect in both the beginners and regular members meetings.

On show will be a variety of computer types and software, including at least one Tablet computer, a computer running Linux (an open and free Operating System), an eBook reader and a Raspberry Pi – a new breed of tiny cheap computers with a serious purpose. Plus a dissembled desktop tower to show what’s actually inside a typical computer along with a table showing the work we do refurbishing computers for reuse by charities and deserving families. We will also have a system running the new Windows 8, shortly to be available on new systems.

Those interested can enrol for the “Beginners Basics” course that will start on October 12th, at 1:15 pm, also at Rumores, full details and will be available on the day.

The beginners courses start from the basics of computers, what they can do, how to set up and run the facilities they offer, and explains those mysterious terms that computing is so full of. It’s suited for those who have no, or a very rudimentary knowledge of computers – if you already know some of the basics you might find our regular Friday morning talks more suitable, but by all means come and talk things through with us and we’ll try and point you in the right direction. The course will concentrate on getting the basic uses of your computer right.

Our classes try to be reasonably informal

and allow for plenty of questions – during the weeks we also slot in days mainly for catching up and question sessions. We have good demonstration facilities – a large screen and projector attached to out club laptop computer – and microphones both for the presenters and the class to use. The Club also owns a variety of other equipment, such as a wireless printer, a large capacity backup drive, a USB turntable and USB Cassette deck for transferring records and cassettes into the computer, slide scanners for converting 35mm slides and negative strips, and an external DVD drive and floppy disk drive, for those whose systems don’t have them. All these are available for free loan to Members. And of course our meeting room is attached to the internet, so we can demonstrate using this, and you can connect to it as needed. We also have a large library of books (and magazines – older ones) available to Members.

We show you what is the best free software to use (genuinely free – not pirated) – there is free software for just about any thing you want to do – and much of it is as good as, some even better – than software you have to buy.

The Club is not linked or affiliated to any local businesses – so we think we are totally impartial as to where to go to buy new items – and of course we can give plenty of advice on what to buy and how much to pay.

The inaugural concert at the new Piedra Amarilla Rural Centre amphitheatre was held recently. A musical evening was the first event to be held in the amphitheatre and there was a host of artists providing a fabulous evening of entertainment. These were led by the Voices of Almanzora along with their Musical Director, Nick Duncan. Several of the choir performed as individuals, including Mel Howard Coles, Dianne Kilner, Sandy Tucker and Roger Dickman. In addition a duo was sung and again this was Roger Dickman but on this occasion he performed with Ella Dring.

In addition there were guitarists Alan and Jeff (Who didn´t want any other names mentioned!) who performed some excellent renditions of Irish Folk songs. Also performing was saxophonist, clarinet and violinist Dave Sharp.

Compere for the evening was entertaining Scotsman Ted Townsend regaled splendidly in a kilt complete with, sporran, ‘Sgian Dubh’ (Scottish Kilt Knife) hose and brogues.

Behind the scenes assistance was provided by none singing members of the Voices along with some members of the Independent Theatre Group and some of their partners.

Although there was a smattering of rain, this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the approximately 100 strong audience. Numbers ranging from the more classical to songs from Oklahoma were performed by the choir along with one song completely in Spanish.

Dave Sharp also performed classical numbers along with contemporary jazz numbers and a great favourite with the audience was his rendition on clarinet of Mr Acker Bilk’s “Stranger On The Shore”.

The amphitheatre itself provided a wonderful backdrop to all of these performances and everything pulled together to make an absolutely magical evening.

The aim of the event was to raise money for charity and 600€ was raised in total. This was split equally between Help The Aged and F.A.C.E. (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone). 300€ was presented at the new Help The Aged shop in Arboleas. The balance of €300 was presented to F.A.C.E. Committee Members, Pauline Marshall and Richard Tolman at Bar Rumores in Albox.

becoming something of a distant memory, thanks to our increasing use of fragrance. From air fresheners to scented candles, perfumed loo roll and bin liners, in-car scents and even scented socks, we live in a miasma of scent.

Share a lift or train carriage and the aroma of spray deodorant and perfume can be overwhelming.

Yet recent reports suggest that perfumed products could affect our health, causing problems including allergies, asthma and migraine, and even interfere with sexual desire.

One leading expert suggests nearly a third of people suffer adverse health effects from being exposed to scents. A major problem is so-called ‘contact’ allergy — where perfumes and scented products trigger eczema and dermatitis when they come into contact with skin.

Molecules in the product trigger an immune response, causing itchiness and even scaly, cracked skin.

About one in 20 is thought to be affected by fragrance allergy — though this number

may be growing.‘Allergies are on the increase,

and the amount of perfumed products is also on the rise,’ says Dr Susannah Baron, consultant dermatologist at Kent & Canterbury hospital, and BMI Chaucer Hospital.

‘Fragrance allergy can show up as contact dermatitis in the site a perfumed product is applied, or as a flare-up of existing eczema. It can be a real problem.’

In July, the EU Scientific C o m m i t t e e on Consumer Safety asked p e r f u m e manufacturers to list potential allergens in their product after reports that they triggered skin reactions.

Earlier this year, the U.S. state of New Hampshire banned workers from wearing scents to protect their co-workers.

Often it may not be immediately obvious that you’ve developed a fragrance allergy, says Dr Baron.

‘You don’t react immediately; the body notes that it does not like the chemical and develops “memory cells”, which cause inflammation when the body is next exposed to this chemical.

‘Gradually, as you are exposed more and more, the body ramps up its reaction, until it becomes more noticeable to you.’

People with pre-existing eczema are particularly vulnerable. ‘The eczema worsens in areas in contact with perfumes or perfume- containing shampoos, conditioners and shower gels,’ says Dr Baron.

But even those without allergies can be at risk of fragrance allergy.

‘You can become suddenly allergic to perfumes and personal care products that

you have been using for years.

‘You can also have problems with unexpected products such as scented toilet roll and scented wipes which can cause irritation.’

And strong scents can also cause headaches. According to Dr Vincent Martin, a headache specialist

at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine,

the nose’s nerve cells, stimulating the nerve system associated with head pain. UK charity Migraine Action warns that intense or penetrating smells can even trigger migraine for the same reason.

The biggest problem is detecting the substance to blame. Since the body reacts slowly, an affected part of skin could have been touched by fragranced soap or deodorant, or clothes washed in fragranced powder as much as perfume applied directly. So finding a culprit is hard.

Lindsey McManus of charity Allergy UK warns: ‘Many chemicals have the potential to irritate skin, including rubber or formaldehyde, which is added to preserve the fragrance. People have to be their own detectives.’

But it is not just chemicals we have to watch out for: Dr Baron cites a natural ingredient — balsam of Peru (a sticky aromatic liquid that comes from cutting the bark of the tree Myroxyolon balsamum,) which is common in fragrances — as a trigger for fragrance allergy.

Would reducing the number of scents surrounding us

help? Dr Baron does not think it is the number of fragrances around us that may be responsible for rising numbers of cases, ‘but there are more cases of eczema so that increases the chance of contact allergies developing’.

She recommends that if you do have sensitive or eczema-prone skin, use non-fragranced products if possible in order to prevent an allergic reaction.

Eczema sufferers should limit their use of soap and instead wash with non-fragranced emollient products.

But avoiding all perfume is not an easy task. Though you can have allergy testing for the constituents in fragrances and other common allergens at your local dermatology department, we are surrounded by scented products.

‘Even if you know which fragrance causes a problem, it can be difficult to avoid as most personal care products - soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, sun cream, shaving gel and washing powder - contain fragrances,’ says Dr Baron.

Hundreds of thousands of people are suffering from ‘disabling’ headaches caused by overuse of painkillers, experts warn.

As many as one in 50 of the population regularly has headaches triggered by the very drugs meant to be numbing their pain.

The risk is highest for those who take aspirin, ibuprofen or paracetamol at least every other day to treat either a headache or another condition such as joint pain.

The health watchdog NICE says that taking too many of

these pills can actually make the brain more sensitive to pain, leaving the sufferer prone to further headaches.

Often they get into a ‘vicious cycle’ whereby their headaches get worse, they take more drugs and the pain becomes even more debilitating. As many as 10million Britons suffer from severe headaches but NICE is concerned that many doctors are not properly diagnosing the type of pain or offering the best treatment.

Many could be better off taking alternative drugs called triptans, inhaling oxygen or even having acupuncture, the watchdog says.

Professor Martin Underwood, a GP and Warwick Medical School researcher who helped draw up the guidelines, said: ‘We have effective treatments for common headache types.

‘However, taking these medicines for more than ten or 15 days a month can cause medication overuse headache,

which is a disabling and preventable disorder.‘Patients with frequent tension-type headaches or

migraines can get themselves into a vicious cycle, where their headaches are getting increasingly worse, so they take more medication which makes their pain even worse as they take more medication.’

Official figures show that the NHS spends over £470million a year on painkiller prescriptions, although not all will be for headaches. Some 62.5million prescriptions were handed out by GPs last year, a 4 per cent rise in just 12 months.

But Dr Gillian Leng, deputy chief executive of NICE, said that too many people were not being given a ‘correct or timely diagnosis’ by their doctors, adding: ‘The key features of medication overuse and the symptoms that distinguish the types of primary headache can be overlooked, and concerns from patients about possible underlying causes can lead to unnecessary hospital investigations.

‘These can mean people experience delays in receiving adequate pain relief from what can be an extremely disabling condition.’

Doctors advising the watchdog said some patients were so worried about their headaches they were begging their GPs to refer them for expensive brain scans to rule out tumours.

Dr Manjit Matharu, a consultant at the National Hospital for Neurology in London, said: ‘Most people’s headaches will not be caused by brain tumours or other serious health problems, and so these should not be offered to patients solely for reassurance.’

Researchers are convinced that a daily walk becomes more important the older you get, with many suggesting that 20 to 30 minutes is all that’s needed to benefit health. Indeed, people in their 70s can reduce their risk of disability and increase their likelihood of maintaining independence by 41 per cent by participating in a walking exercise programme, found one study at the University of Georgia.

Another recent U.S. study at the University of Pittsburgh found that normally sedentary older adults who walked at a moderate pace three times a week for a year boosted the size of the brain region involved with memory, thereby slowing age-related memory loss.

WOMEN:

Yoga holds no barriers when it comes to age, and gentler approaches of the ancient discipline can be hugely beneficial for women in their 70s.

Researchers at Temple University, in Philadelphia, found that a nine-week course of yoga led to improved walking speed and better balance in 24 women aged 65 to 80. It also increased their height by a centimetre, possibly due to them standing more upright with better posture.

Meanwhile, psychologists at RMIT University in Melbourne showed that practising soothing yoga for at least 25 minutes a day for 12 weeks improved elderly participants’ sleep patterns and enhanced their psychological and emotional well-being.

finally be able to see again after

receiving what was quite possibly the

world’s largest ever cataract operation.

the 43-year-old asian elephant,

who only has the one eye left,

had been able to do little more than distinguish

between light and dark for years. but thanks to surgeons

at paignton Zoo, devon, she should

soon be able to see clearly once again.

The huge creature was put under by anaesthetists David Burton and Jo Jago for around three hours, while the delicate operation was carried out by consultant opthamologist Jim Carter and assistant John Lewis.

After she came round Duchess seemed to be fine and was tenderly rubbing the sore eye with her trunk. The zoo’s curator of mammals, Neil Bemment, said although

Duchess was groggy after the operation, the signs were looking good.

He said: ‘She’s up and about but like anyone who’s had a major operation it will take some time for her to fully recover.

‘She’s been making her usual bellowing sounds which is a good sign. But it will be some time before we are able to tell if we’ve saved her sight.’

He added she may have another ten

years of life if things go well.

It’s not the first time Duchess has had groundbreaking surgery. She was the first elephant to have an eye removed last year because of glaucoma.

Because of the cataract in her left eye she was to all intents and purposes blind although she can probably still tell the difference between light and dark.

Zoo staff have been caring for Duchess’s eyesight for some time and she has been trained to accept eye-drops and other medication.

She has been on her own since her long-time companion, Gay, a female

Asian elephant, was euthanised in March 2010 due to ill health.

Mr Bemment said: ‘In spite of this, she seems to still be in good spirits and as keen on her food as always.

‘She receives a lot of attention from her keepers.

‘Duchess’s welfare and quality of life are our primary concern.

‘Elephants have an acute sense of smell and terrific hearing, so she is well aware of things happening around her even if she cannot actually see them.’

The answer to this is most definitely yes. In England if you do not make a will, then the law has rules, which will determine the distribution of your assets. These rules could mean that your assets are distributed in a way very different from what you would have liked. In Spain the situation is the same, with an additional factor. Your heirs will have to deal with a foreign language and legal system. All the more reasons to leave everything as organized as possible. Some people include their Spanish assets in their English will. This is legally binding, but to obtain probate in Spain, it will be necessary for the will to be translated and legalized. This is a long and costly procedure. My advice on the subject is to have two separate wills, one in England for your English assets and one in Spain for your Spanish assets. Drawing up a will in Spain does not take long and is not expensive, and will definitely save your heirs a lot of time, problems and money. Your Lawyer will draw up a rough draft, and then he will make an appointment at the notary to sign the final document. One copy is sent by the notary to the central register in Madrid. He will hold on to the original copy. You will be given a copy that I suggest you inform your heirs and lawyer in England about, and then put it in the bottom draw, with the peace of mind of knowing that everything is taken care of.

The small town at Turre is a few kilometres inland from Mojacar Playa and nestled at the foot of the beautiful Sierra Cabrera mountain range. The place is of Latin origin, the word ‘Turris’ meaning ‘tower’ is based on the watchtower that was built by the Moslims from Mojacar in the Nazaria period; this watchtower, was to protect the people from the continuous attacks by the Christians of Lorca

Over the past years the towns population has grown rapidly and many expats have moved to this expanding town of many nationalities. With the main high street, many meandering side streets, town square, the Parish Church de la Purísima Concepción, constructed between 1861 and 1887 as well as other significant monuments, shops, bars and restaurants Turre has plenty to offer its residents and the many people who holiday in the area.

There are a number of fiestas that take place, one for your diary takes place from the 3-6th October St Francis of Assisi, Local games, live music, tasty tapas and plenty of dancing take place on this end of Summer fiesta. During the summer months the town hall organised the Turre tapas trail where over 20 bars and restaurants took part. “Because that’s where the money is”. So replied the infamous US bank robber, Willie

Sutton, when asked why he robbed banks.There are many European leaders who could give

the same reply today when asked why they are raising taxes for their wealthier citizens.

As the Euro crisis plays out and budget deficits prove harder to curb, governments increasingly need to raise tax revenue. Tax hikes have become all too familiar with most of the burden is being placed on those with higher incomes and/or substantial assets.

In the UK the Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat leader recently called for the introduction of a new “emergency” wealth tax. French President François Hollande has made no secret of his view

that the wealthy should pay more tax. Here in Spain the top rate of income tax increased from 45% to 52%. Rates here increased across the board here, the increase was much higher for those at the top. Tax on savings income was also hiked.

Countries like Portugal and France have also imposed some sort of “solidarity tax” for top earners, as an emergency measure to collect more revenue.

And then there are wealth taxes. In Spain it has been a case of now you see it; now you don’t; now you do. The unpopular tax was effectively abolished in 2008 only to be reinstated just three years later for 2011 and 2012. There is a strong possibility it will have to apply for 2013 as well.

Many of these tax rises are meant to be temporary measures until the respective country reduces its budget deficit to 3%. This is proving harder than

At a time of economic crisis, that looming row is once again upon us.

The Commission points out that the budget it has proposed represents only about 1% of Europe’s income, and many countries are supportive.

They want to protect spending programmes from which they benefit, such as the Common Agricultural Policy or Regional Funding for poorer areas of the European Union.

But a number of influential countries argue that increased spending is not tenable and they want a real freeze in the size of the budget.

Britain’s Europe Minister David Liddington said he would be making it clear that the Commission has to “get into the habit of spending better, not always looking to spend more”.

As for proposals to change the nature of the UK abatement or rebate - that, he said, “simply isn’t going to happen”.

The centre-right government in Portugal has agreed to look for alternatives to a social security tax rise a week after huge anti-austerity street protests.

Previously, it had planned to raise contributions next year from 11% to 18%, to meet the conditions of Portugal’s international bailout.

Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho announced his decision at a meeting with President Anibal Cavaco Silva.

Thousands of protesters chanted slogans outside the presidential palace.

Last Saturday, tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Lisbon and other Portuguese cities.

President Cavaco Silva called the meeting of his state council amid concern that Portugal’s main trump card in the eyes of foreign investors, its cross-party consensus on austerity, was in tatters, the BBC’s Alison Roberts reports from Lisbon.

A statement released afterwards said: “The council was informed of the government’s readiness to study, within the framework of the social bargaining process, alternatives to changes in the social security rate.”

It also said that differences between the two parties which make up the ruling coalition had been overcome, and they both remained committed to the bailout’s targets.

I can imagine the scene: In the kitchen is Anne, Hathawaying like billy-o over a heap of vegetables while a pot of stew simmers over a blazing fire. ‘Bill,’ she calls.

The Bard wanders in, flicking a dagger idly between his fingers. ‘Can’t seem to get these inkspots out of my shirt.’ He scrapes ineffectively at the spots with the dagger. ‘Out, damned spot! Out! I say.’

Anne straightens up and wipes her sweaty forehead with the corner of her apron. ‘Oh Bill, Oi’ve told ‘ee not to buy them cheap quills, they always splutters so - look at the state o’ you! Now, I need you to repair with great haste to the market and get me half a dozen

There’s a quiz show on British ITV called The Chase. We have seen it occasionally if we are having an early dinner and watch it as I am slaving away over a hot microwave in the kitchen.

The negativity of the contestants amazes me. The majority of them play safe and urge their team mates to opt for a meagre amount of dosh, instead of a sizeable, albeit riskier, target. I won’t go into details about the game, but if you have seen it, you know what I mean.

I have no idea what the highest amount has been - I think I remember a figure of thirty something grand once, although most of the time the total prize money amounts to less than ten thousand. This is divided between the number of players left in the game, but only if they can outsmart one of the chasers each of whom is a veritable walking encyclopaedia. No, the thing that surprises me is that this is probably a once only opportunity to make a decent few bob, but very few of the contestants cast aside all their inhibitions and really go for it. I mean, you go on to the show with nothing, so why not take

the leap. Unfortunately for the most

part they seem to be content with a couple of thousand quid in order to take a three day cruise to Canvey Island or replace their old rusting Ford Escort, for a new Vespa. Even if the team of four win and it’s for one of the larger sums; then that’s only going to be a max of ten grand each. But even that is a rare occurrence as far as I know.

Then you have that old favourite, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, where the maximum prize, as the title suggests, is a staggering one million. But is it so staggering? I mean, what exactly would a mill buy you these days?

I remember when an old boy in Cornwall won what was a record £250,000 on the football pools back in the early 70’s and ten years before that when a lady called Viv Nicholson pulled in a pools win of £152.000 – about five million and three million respectively in terms of today’s values. Viv declared that she was going to spend, spend, spend. She did and was broke within three years.

It is estimated that more than 11,000 people in the UK earn a million a year plus, which would indicate that the number of people holding more than a million in cash assets is many times that. Add to that property, shares and investments and the actual figure of millionaires in

the UK could well be in the hundreds of thousands. But there is now a distinct difference between being a millionaire and living a millionaire life-style.

Let’s say you went all the way winning a million smackers and had the dubious experience of Chris Tarrant pumping your hand and giving you best-of- mates-hugs under a snow storm of confetti. What would it buy you?

Well presumably a nice house would be on many people’s shopping list, but let’s face it, if you opted for London or leafy Surrey; there wouldn’t be a lot of change left over for things like food and lottery tickets. So a more modest target would need to be looked at – say five hundred thousand.

That would get you an above average four bedroom detached in many areas. But then maintaining it and living comfortably would be mighty difficult with the depressing interest rates today. You would seriously have to consider keeping the day job just to tread water.

If you opted for an even more modest property at say 200k, then welcome to Birkenhead or Goole – at least you would be near the sea. The interest on the rest, even without buying a new motor and a round-the-world-cruise, should just about ensure a reasonable life style if you were careful.

No, I reckon that to live that fabled

millionaire lifestyle, you would need one of the heftier wins on Euro Millions – say 20 million at least. This would get you that pad in Chipping Campden; a nice Aston Martin Vantage; numerous foreign trips and a villa on the beach in St Barts with its own dock and accompanying Sunseeker. This should leave you with plenty in the kitty to invest wisely and live high off the hog for the rest of your life. And don’t forget that people with this sort of bread, are always able to employ the best tax avoidance consultants and get away with the minimum amount payable to HM Customs and Revenue.

And that’s why I don’t even get out of bed for anything less than a quadruple roll-over on the lottery.

the ministro del interior, on receiving the despatch and seeing who the sender was quickly passed it to another department. to be involved in the affairs of alqueria is not a good career move. the great pepino Scandal of 97 had taught those in power not to associate themselves with the intrigues of that troublesome little village. government department after department handled, ignored and passed on the letter. finally the fabric of the envelope succumbed to fatigue and the contents tumbled out. on seeing the suggestion that alqueria may no longer be part of Spain ministers of state clambered for the kudos of finally solving the alquerian problem. even the department of Sanitation and vermin eradication tried to bask in the reflected glory of alqueria’s possible exile.

it was the ministerio de asuntos exteriores y de cooperación who took responsibility and gleefully accepted don Sageo’s assumptions. the papers were duly signed and the

royal Seal affixed. alqueria was no longer part of Spain and therefore not answerable to the madrid government. all that needed to be done was to despatch the papers making alqueria foreign soil and organise the biggest fiesta in the history of the Spanish civil Service.

don Sageo read the reply several times. he thought perhaps he should say nothing but this was not the sort of thing that could be kept to oneself. rodriquez representing the newcomers and antonio poyato the hill people stared in disbelief as the don acquainted them with the letter’s contents. the implications of don Sageo’s handiwork had to be communicated to the people of alqueria.

high street bakery will feed our troops so they can have a ‘taste of home’

With 1,600 stores across the UK, its name has become a familiar sight on almost every High Street.

But bakery chain Greggs is poised to expand even further afield - by supplying sausage rolls to British soldiers serving abroad.

The company is to start sending frozen savoury items to a British military base in Guterslöh, Germany, in a trial designed to give troops a ‘taste of home’.

If successful, the concept could be rolled out to serve more than 32,000 British soldiers across the globe.

Under the deal with Armed Forces caterer Naafi, Greggs will supply a range of seven frozen savoury items - including sausage rolls, steak bakes, chilli bakes and sausage and bean melts - to Guterslöh for 12 weeks.

The products will be baked throughout the day by Greggs-trained Naafi personnel and displayed on a Greggs-branded counter.

They will cost as much as they do in Britain.

Naafi’s chief executive, Reg Curtis, said the deal was ‘not about nutrition’.

‘A soldier can eat three healthy three-course meals a day for less than €5 (£4) in the army,’ he told the Times.

‘This is about giving the common soldier a taste of home.’

The Guterslöh Naafi, which caters for 2,300 servicemen, was chosen for the trial because it serves ‘a large number of single men’, whom Mr Curtis believes will prefer

the savoury goods to German foods.Greggs claimed that its products had come

top in a survey which asked armed forces personnel what items they most missed from home.

The Newcastle-based company’s chief executive, Ken McKeikan, a Royal Navy veteran of the Falklands War, said he hoped the trial would pave the way to a global Naafi deal.

Naafi outlets serve 32,500 troops across Afghanistan, Brunei, Germany, Gibraltar and the Falklands.

Manned by civilians, many of whom are dependants of service personnel, they offer home comforts such as British bread, British milk, British fish & chips, and British beer.

Mr McKeikan said: ‘It’s great to hear that Greggs was the most requested brand that troops missed from home and we are really pleased to be making our savouries accessible to our troops in Germany, and, depending on the success of the trial, more widely available for our armed forces personnel around the world.’

The trial is another triumph for Greggs, coming less than four months after it claimed victory in a battle with the Treasury over Chancellor George Osborne’s planned ‘pasty tax’.

Mr Osborne announced in March that hot snacks would be subject to 20 per cent VAT, but the decision was overturned in May after a much-publicised campaign led by the bakery chain.

McDonald’s has announced that from Thursday it will be serving up noodles to customers at restaurants across Austria in a bid to meet the country’s growing appetite for the foodstuff.

The meals will come with vegetables and salad, chicken pieces and either sweet and sour or curry sauce and be available for a limited time.

The company says it has spent more than a year developing the product for the thriving Austrian market.

In a statement the company said: ‘This has been for McDonald’s a complete new challenge.’

McDonald’s is the world’s second most popular fast food chain behind Subway with more than 33,000 restaurants around the world.

The Oak Brook, Illinois-based company became popular serving up the famous Big Mac and French fries, but in recent years it has branched out to offers localized menu

options in various regions.In India, the company offers McAloo Tikki

burgers made with a spicy breaded potato patty, red onions, tomatoes and a ‘special vegetable sauce.’

Earlier this month, the company announced plans to open its first vegetarian-only restaurants in the country.

The decision was taken in order to cater for Hindus who hold the cow sacred and Muslims who do not eat pork

The first vegetarian outlet will open its doors mid-next year near the Golden Temple in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar in northern India, where religious authorities forbid consumption of meat at the shrine.

Rajesh Kumar Maini, a spokesman for McDonald’s in northern India, said: ‘There is a big opportunity for vegetarian restaurants (in India) as many Indians are vegetarian.’

After the opening in Amritsar, the U.S. chain has plans to open another vegetarian outlet near the Vaishno Devi cave shrine in northwestern Indian Kashmir - a revered Hindu pilgrimage site that draws hundreds of thousands of worshippers year.

The organisers would like to issue a huge thank you to all of those who participated (over 50 children and 100 adults) in our beach clean-up, especially the children who managed to collect around 13,000 cigarette ends!!! The event was a great success and between us all we collected over 100 big bags full of rubbish, mostly consisting in lots of plastic straws, glasses and bottles, broken glass and other non-biodegradable waste. Thanks to the Sailing club who also participated by cleaning the area in front of the Ferreteria Lopez with 4 industrial bags full of rubbish too!

It was a great day with a great example set as well as being educational and effective, thanks to all of the participating businesses who collaborated with drinks, food, ice-creams and prizes. A special thanks to the mini-golf, G-Spot, for letting all the children have free games after the event and cooking the paella for us all, that was delicious!

A fresh oil crisis is brewing. However, this time it won’t be hitting the garage forecourts but the nation’s kitchens, according to a report in the Observer.

The wholesale price of extra virgin olive oil has jumped 62% in three months after a severe drought in Spain, the world’s largest producer, wiped out an estimated 600,000 tonnes of production.

Filippo Berio, the UK’s biggest olive oil supplier, has warned that it will be forced to pass on the increase to consumers.

“The [wholesale] prices are going up rapidly daily,” said Walter Zanre, managing director of Filippo Berio, which sells 10m litres of oil a year in Britain.

“It’s very difficult to buy olive oil because they [the growers] are waiting for it to go up even higher next week. You’re looking at £2,800 per tonne [of extra virgin olive oil].”

Zanre said the extent to which the increase in costs is passed on to shoppers, is “the million dollar question”. He said: “I would say 25% now, but if we had had this conversation 10 days ago I would have said 10% to 15%.”

The average 500ml bottle of supermarket brand olive oil currently costs about £2, while a 500ml bottle of Filippo Berio oil sells for £3.39.

“We are torturing ourselves because our product will go over the psychologically important £4 barrier,” said Zanre. “This isn’t a 5% blip, we can’t tighten our belts and absorb it.”

Consumers who can’t bear the thought of going without olive oil are advised to stock up before the price rise hits. Zanre said supermarkets have a “virtual embargo on retail price increases” in the runup to Christmas, so now would be the time to get your supplies in for 2013.

Thomas Mielke, director of Oil World, a trade journal that tracks oil prices, said the staggering price rise results from an “unprecedented

Spanish olive trees have been hit by drought and an unexpected frost in the flowering season in spring. This has led to trees producing less fruit and the olives that have grown are less juicy than normal.

“The fruit can be shrivelled and not looking normal, much smaller in size, which means they produce less oil,” Mielke said.

The poor crop, due to be harvested in October, comes a year after Spain returned its best crop in years, causing an olive oil glut and a steep fall in prices that left many growers on the breadline.

Spain is by far the most important country involved in olive cultivation and accounts for almost half of worldwide supplies. “Whatever happens in Spain causes massive changes in the world price,” said Vito Martielli, senior oil seeds analyst at Rabobank International. “Last year, Spain had a very good season and produced 1.4m tonnes of olive oil, but this season it is expected to be less than

1m. The total global olive oil production is 3m tonnes a year.”

Martielli said the average price of olive oil of all qualities has increased from 2,200 Euros a tonne in July to 3,200 Euros a tonne last week.

The drop in supply comes as demand for olive oil is at an all-time high with new countries developing a taste for the Mediterranean staple.

Miekle said: “Olive oil consumption is in the middle of a long-term increase in consumption. While it has reached saturation point in Spain and Italy, countries like the US and Australia are relative newcomers and are using much more olive oil.”

A rising number of the British are also turning to olive oil, according to Zanre. “The appetite is growing continually,” he said. “There’s a bit of a love affair with it among the chattering middle classes, but other people are consuming it too.”

He said the average Briton consumes half a litre of olive oil a year, far below the 14 litres a head in Italy, the world’s biggest consumer.

Independent Theatre Group has had a busy summer preparing for our forthcoming production. We are currently rehearsing to bring this dramatic ghostly tale to a theatre near you. The play is called The Exorcism (written by Don Taylor), and is about a series of macabre events which take place in a 17th century renovated cottage at Christmas.

It is a small cast of 4 who are working extremely hard to present this play in all its glory. The play is directed by Gordon Batchelor who says

“I am extremely pleased with the way the rehearsals are progressing, this is a fantastic play and I am very proud to be able to present it to you. The set design is once again out of this world, and is in the secure hands of our excellent backstage crew. The cast are really pulling out all the stops to make this ghostly tale a real experience to watch”

ITG have also rented a stall at Los Llanos Market to promote our group, recruit new members and also offer another outlet for ticket sales. So far we have managed to speak to lots of people and hopefully encourage more people to come along and support local Theatre.

Tickets will be on sale shortly with performances on the first weekend in November at Cantoria and the weekend after in Arboleas, with a special performance at Cantoria on Halloween for those wishing to come along.

Before moving to Turre I did not know much about the place apart from driving down the main drag noticing its selection of British owned bars and shops. Turre seems to be a much maligned and misunderstood place similar to Albox which also gets a bad press; often from people that have never even visited either town.

I had visited the old part of Turre before as we at Findmeahome have a beautiful reformed town house there for sale and thought it looked an attractive part of town.

Living near Turre now it’s the nearest place to pop to for shopping or a bite to eat and I have to say I really like the place. There is a huge supermarket in the centre of town which is like an Aladdin’s cave as it seems to sell everything however obscure.

It also has the best wine selection to be seen outside of the hypermarkets in Almeria City even stocking shock horror! Non Spanish wines no less.

Leaving the main drag there are some great little shops and bars serving good inexpensive tapas plus some great restaurants in the town for all tastes. Wandering a side street recently we found a place where they turn reclaimed timber into beautiful pieces of furniture. I bought a pine desk and commissioned the owner to turn a beautiful old door we saw there into an outdoor dining table. There is also a second hand furniture shop at the top of the town.

I did wryly smile the other day when ordering some food in a bar, firstly the tapas arrived stone cold as serving staff never seem to understand that if three plates are

put in a microwave then it takes three times as long to heat them up. The plates were also tossed down on the table as far away as possible from us. We had to get up and look for forks, then napkins and crikey when I dared to ask for Tabasco sauce the waitress said no before I had even finished my sentence. The poor girl kept complaining how busy she was but still had time for fags and a sit down with some mates. In the same town is a bar where the owners smile at the customers, the food is delicious and served hot with all the trimmings plus customers are asked if they are enjoying what they eat. I will let my feet will vote for me next time I am out.

The Club Sandwich when made correctly and with love is a magnificent beast; by correctly I mean it should have an egg in it and be cut into quarters with each held together by a little skewer. Up until now La Vida in Cucador were streets ahead, then last week the Beachcomber in Mojacar added the magnificent beast to its menu. Alerted by Facebook I tried one at the weekend after Beachcomber John promised mine would have the required egg inside and very good it was too. La Vida still holds my OCD award for the best club sandwich due to the fact that the Beachcomber sandwich was only cut into two!

Anyone that knew Dave Byfleet of DB Autos will surely remember him as a hardworking, gentle, quiet and kind man. Dave and his son Kyle helped me many times whenever I had car trouble in the past. I send my condolences to his wife Michelle and family.

GIvE TuRRE A TRY!There are an awful lot of people going to University now. There are also an

awful lot of Universities for them to go to-just as well really isn’t it? I think it is so important that more of us are being educated to a higher level because there are lots of things today that are incredibly complicated. I’m not talking about performing those magic tricks where you saw a person in half, or even simpler things like, taking an appendix out! No, just ordering a drink can be a trial for the highly educated Graduates out there.

I’m quite sure that, when an Ethiopian shepherd started chewing on some mysterious seeds which enabled him to have the energy to watch his sheep all night, he didn’t know how complicated things were going to get in that department when they became coffee! I recently went to my local Starbucks and, oh my, what a trial. I wanted a drink. That’s all, just a drink. Silly me! You can’t order just a drink anymore. The days of asking for a cup of tea, cup of coffee or a hot chocolate are long gone. I asked for a hot chocolate, it was like an interrogation and I had to answer, within milliseconds. What size? Did I want cream? Did I want flake? A squirt of caramel? I’ve seen contestants on Mastermind have an easier time!

Actually I felt sorrier for the lady behind me who, while I was waiting for whatever on earth it was that I had been harangued into ordering, was asking for coffee. Clearly, neither she nor I were up to the standard of their usual customers, for she also had a terrible time. Did she want House Blend or Colombian Blend? Was it an Espresso she wanted? Did she want medium or blonde? The poor woman stood open mouthed and just nodded. From the look of disgust on the server’s face it was clear that neither of us had passed the test and I half expected to receive a leaflet with instructions to revise for my next visit or risk being put into the bottom customer set.

Those Ethiopian shepherds never had this trouble five hundred years ago! Anyway, from now on I’ve decided that I’m going to stand outside Starbucks,chewing the beans and making faces at the know all servers… from a distance. That’s a mature response, don’t you think?

Frank Clements admits that there were “so many ups and downs” in his life, personally and professionally in his down-to-earth style of expression. His autobiography is a fascinating journey for someone who has had an interesting life. Surviving the turbulent times may well have been because of his positive attitude: “Always look on the bright side of life.” It certainly became his saving grace on many difficult occasions.

He was ambitious and that is clearly evident here. In his early days as an amateur cyclist before becoming a semi-pro then a pro he wanted to be “the best cyclist in the world.” It would have been a dream come true. He lamented: “I should have won an Olympic gold medal” in the 1956 games held in Melbourne, Australia .He just missed being a member of the team.

“I was a likely contender” and it was “50/50 between Harry and me.” Harry Reynolds. As it turned out ironically, the French won the gold and England the silver.

The book is a comprehensive accounting of cycling during the 50s and 60s and gives an informative account of the cycling industry and business from the 60s onwards. Clements used his expertise in the industry for many years at a senior level producing bicycle frames, supplying bikes to countries around the world and name-dropping is something to be expected when you are working in a lucrative field such as this and mixing with celebrities and world class cyclists.

In spite of this huge disappointment in missing out on an Olympic medal Clements had many moments of success for which the Clements’ family must have felt extreme pride. Success came at a gruelling price with battling against “torrential, chilling, blinding, sense numbing rain” typical of the UK when you felt as if you were riding a bike “in a washing machine!”

Competing with an older brother who did manage to win a silver medal must have been difficult for Frank. He does write about the difficult working relationship with Ernest when he was in the “wrong mood “ and described him as being “vicious.”

“Jealousy seemed to affect our business relationship.”By 1957 disillusionment began to set in. “Why did I have to be like this continually driving

myself on?” Too much pressure. Too ambitious? He stated that “his brain was not in the right gear.” He couldn’t race competitively because his “mental approach to the sport was in a terrible state.”

One factor was competing against cyclists who were using stimulants-amphetamines known as “charging “ to enhance performance. Mention was made of Tommy Simpson, Alan Jackson and Ron Coe who all had premature, untimely deaths but no doubt there were many more who died far too early striving for success in sport.

We see glimpses of the personal side, the man who married in “haste” who eventually found his soul-mate and I suppose lived happily ever after. After a life-threatening condition and serious business problems the Clements chose the easier “ride” to retire to the Spanish sunshine in Almeria.

HACKERS AND CRACKERS...AND WHY YOU DON'T HAVE

TO WORRY ABOUT THEMPART 1

Before I start explaining about hackers and crackers, I would like to tell you about an opportunity to get unbiased advice on computer problems at “La Vida” in Cucador. What is a Hackers?

This type of person, and it is a personality type, has an insatiable curiosity and will often find ways to bypass a system just because it is a problem to be solved! This cruise control, which can be used at speeds as low as 20mph, works best when the desired speed has been reached on a flat road - it happily maintains progress. Don’t whatever you do though, use cruise instead of the accelerator as progress can be sloth-like. Its six speed manual box is generally decisive. What is a Cracker?

Put simply a Cracker is a CRiminal hACKER. A Cracker could be described as a Hacker who can morally justify their actions in wilfully breaking the oh-so-many laws.

These hyper-intelligent criminals are hackers but with this huge difference – All they are only interested is to bypass security protocols to gain access to unauthorised areas of a system or a program. When done, they are free to do whatever they wish – steal personal information or introduce a program that will allow access to future information that may be of use.

Occasionally and quite frighteningly,

huge multi-national companies pay individuals like these to gain access to competitors information and project details just so that they can maintain the 'edge'.

How easy it it to get started as a Hacker/ Cracker?

Maybe the best answer might be “How much time do you have to learn to understand Windows XP / Vista / 7 and then a variety of programs?”. Because this is exactly what you have to do to gain enough knowledge to be able to start cracking! This is probably the hardest of all methods to achieve the goal of gaining access to your computer (which gives the greatest sense of achievement).

over the past few years car manufacturers have tried to re-invent the handbrake. step inside a rolls royce, bentley, Jaguar, range rover or renault and you’ll find

that it has been replaced by a simple switch.

But the cool triangular exhausts have sadly disappeared. As ever this Civic is aimed at those considering the bland Volkswagen Golf or Ford Focus. Compared to those two it definitely stands out from the crowd.

Its five-door design retains that essence of sportiness more akin to a three door by cleverly concealing the rear door handles in the same way as the old Alfa Romeo 156. The aerodynamic design sees a bar across the rear windscreen, which impedes vision somewhat and calls for careful reversing.

Inside it is spacious with a particularly good size boot. This 1.8-litre petrol is fairly responsive to drive as well with good low down torque although when worked hard it can be a little raucous. It took me a while to discover how to operate the cruise control and speed limiter buttons found on the right of the steering wheel. They are engaged by pressing the ‘Main’ button, which to me is not logical. However, this system is reliable to within a few mph of

This week our handicap secrectary was kept busy adjusting handicaps with some excellent scores returned on both days.

Tuesday 11th we played stableford as the uneven numbers dictated as no one wished to play with the ghost.

lost congers which were stealing hooked fish from their traces and taking hooks and line and sometimes traces with them. I think the only hook not attacked was the one meant for them on my line, attached to a 100lb wire trace.

Steve also took out the ‘Sheffield Crew’ in the week consisting of ‘Mike the welder’, John, Jim, Shaz and Kerry. With a light north easterly wind and light swell Steve anchored the boat on the edge of a sand bank in 120ft which dropped off quickly to over 700ft and where shoals of fish were showing on the sonar about 1km out from the Repsol garage and tackle shop.

The crew were soon into fish catching good sized Atlantic and Spanish mackerel, pandoras, pickerels, big weavers and an octopus. The fishing stayed brisk for most of the morning and they finished the day with a full fish well including 11 of the biggest

mackerel for the BBQ.The following day Eric,

Ian and Karen were joined by George and Eileen for a day out fishing with Steve in what was again great conditions and very similar to the previous day so Steve decided to go straight out and anchor in the same spot as previous. The decision was a good one as we they were all soon into fish catching good sized Atlantic and Spanish mackerel again plus pandoras, pickerels, weavers and one red snapper. A flying tub gurnard, an octopus and the first squid ever to be landed on the boat, and in broad daylight! The fishing stayed consistent all morning and everyone was pleased with their catch and the fact that they had caught their own suppers.

Shore Fishing‘London Bill’ has been

catching well, a small bluefish among other species while spinning by the white lady statue where Garrucha beach joins the harbour wall. He

told me he lost what he thinks was a big barracuda, says it bit through 80lb fluorocarbon.

Bill also caught Atlantic and channel mackerel, palometes and one small sea bass from Macenas Rocks. The shore fishing is good right now he says.

Coarse Fishing.‘Baza Barry’ says Lake

Negratin’s water levels are as usually dropping fast but fish are still feeding well and the slightly cooler water temperatures have had no effect on the fishing.

‘puentes Ray’ had a good day at Lake Puentes near Lorca, mirror carp to 20lbs.

Matches in Murcia were won with 14.1/2lbs and 31lbs.

I think I have a loophole for those sea anglers who do not have an NIE and want a license to fish Andalucian beaches and sea by boat, (Name, any address and passport number only required)

It looks like rain in Cherry Blossom Lane, thank goodness; but I hope it cleares for the weekend.

Sailing is still top the agenda and what a wonderful day on Sunday 16th. Houri and I were invited to sail on “Blitzen” Ian´s 25 ft sailing cruiser. In a steady force 2 heading towards a F3. We were sailing comfortably with David trimming the Sails to get the best speed out of her. With us was the “Macgregor 28”; plus a number of Dinghies including the red sails of “Casi Casi” and Lydon enjoying him self on his “Catapult Catamaran”.

September will see the return of many of our Sailors; this is an opportunity to remind you of our new Venue: the new club House “Tela Marinera” which is directly opposite the new Marina, Garrucha.

Our paralympic Sailors did us proud; there are only 3 types of boats involved, the single hander 2.4m, the Skud 18 with a crew of 2 and the Sonar” with a crew of 3. For me they were all Medal winners. Briton had not won a Medal since sailing was introduced into the paralympics Games in 2000 at the Sydney Games.

Helena Lucas was our Gold Medal winner in the 2.4m, she was the only women in the fleet, “Well Done!”.

In the 2 person Scud 18, Alexandera Ricktman and Niki Birrell won Bronze medals. In the 3 person Sonar we were judged to have finished in 5th place, having received

a 4 point Penalty for an incident which happened off the water!! A big disappointment for the crew (John Robertson, Hannah Strodel and Steve Thomas). They are a appealing against the Penalty which denied them a Bronze medal, I wonder what nationality the Judges were?? The last day of Racing was cancelled due to the lack of wind!

Although Sailing was introduced to the Olympics in 1900; Para Olympic Sailing did not begin until 2000 at the “Sydny Games”. I became interested in Disabled Sailing when I did a course with RYA “Sailability” in the UK in 1999; there were sailors with a big variety of disabilities including a Blind lady sailor.

Perhaps our best known disabled sailor is Geoff Holt who sailed single handed around the British Isles in 2007; he also sailed across the Atlantic in 2010.

The first round of Forum Golf Society´s 2012 Championship was a stableford competition played at Desert Springs on September 21st, and with the second & final round to be played at Aguilon on October 5th there are quite a few players still in contention.

The favourite however, will be Derek Manning, winner of the first round with 37 points, ahead of Mike Duckham (36 points) in second, Anne Holder (34 points) third and John Holder fourth (33 points). Also in the running are Phil Elam, Gary Blake, Des Riley & Geoff Hebb who all also scored 33 points, whilst John Smith (32 points), Terry Moore & paul Douglas (both 31 points) still have an outside chance.

prizes were won by Ann Lawrence, Anne Holder, Terry Moore & Malcolm Fenwick, with Kevin Bircher hitting the day´s longest drive on the Stroke Index One 11th Hole.

On Thursday 20th September we visited the Lorca course in the Murcia Region. With storm clouds threatening to spoil our eagerly awaited battle with this (relatively unknown to the 19th Hole G/S) course we drew our Club and charged into the affray.

With varying degrees of success we all made it off the 1st tee and battle commenced. I think it fair to say that in the main we beat the course fair and square, with some really excellent scores. We had a couple of 40 pointers and several high 30’s a good indicator of our player’s diligence and skill in reading the greens and coping with the usual difficulties.

The day was marred slightly when it was pointed out that we had played off the Blue Tees which are the Ladies competition Tees, but as the Blue and Yellow Tees are so close together we felt the result would have been the same.

Christine Dow had her best result since she started playing scoring 27 point, really well done Christine good to see you beating your better half so comprehensibly (Hubby Peter is now on household chores until further notice)

One other problem we encountered, Terry Caddick hit a really good drive on the 13th-albiet a bit wayward- hit

a overhead power cable causing a complete power failure to the Clubhouse for the rest of the day. Brian Dee (Terry’s playing partner) described the shot as Shocking!!!.

Geoff Smith cleverly secured nearest the pin on the tricky 10th hole. He scuffed the tee shot onto the ladies tee from where it scuttled along the ground onto the fairway then ending 3’ from the pin.!!

Hamilton headed Vettel from the start but a gearbox failure dealt a major blow to the Briton’s world title hopes.

Fellow British driver Jenson Button took second in his McLaren from Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, who leads Vettel by 29 points in the standings.

Hamilton slips to fourth, 52 points off the lead with only 150 available, seven points behind Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen.

The retirement means Hamilton will almost certainly not be able to catch Alonso in the remaining six races, barring some bad luck for the Spaniard, and it remains to be seen whether the latest in a series of disappointments this season has an effect on his future career choice.

Hamilton is out of contract at the end of the season and has two offers on the table - one to stay with McLaren and one to move to Mercedes.

Vettel’s pace following Hamilton’s exit suggested the McLaren might have been

holding up the Red Bull slightly but Hamilton was in control of the race until his car lost drive on lap 23 coming out of the first chicane.

He had known for about a minute that there was an impending problem.

“It’s one of the toughest races all year,” said Vettel. “It’s very long, we did the full two hours, the circuit is a killer, there are many bumps and there is no room for error.

“Obviously I benefited from Lewis’s failure, which I could see for a couple of laps. I’m very happy, it’s such a tough race and very proud to win it.

“I’d like to dedicate it to Sid Watkins. He will be remembered [as] one of the main reasons we can go out on a circuit like this and be reasonably safe.

“It’s an incredible weekend for all of us. We have a lot of races left, we just have to use the momentum and keep pushing.”

That left Vettel in front from Button, Williams’s Pastor Maldonado and Alonso but they raced only until lap 33, when a crash by Narain

Karthikeyan’s HRT brought out the safety car.

Maldonado dropped down the order after pitting to change tyres, even though he had made his second pit stop only four laps earlier at the same time as Alonso.

The Venezuelan, who had qualified second, retired before the race was restarted with a hydraulics problem.

The re-start came on lap 39, but the cars raced for only half a lap before Michael Schumacher smashed into the back of Toro Rosso’s Jean-Eric Vergne, who was battling with Sauber’s Sergio Perez.

It was the second time in succession Schumacher had retired in Singapore after running into the back of another car - and the second time this season after doing the same to Williams’s Bruno Senna in the Spanish Grand Prix.

He said there was a problem with the car that meant it did not brake in the normal way, however he later admitted to the stewards that it was his mistake. As a result, he was given a 10-place grid penalty

for the Japanese Grand Prix.

The race was restarted again on lap 42, when it was already clear it would reach the two-hour time limit before the full 61 laps were complete. In the end it was stopped two short of full distance.

Vettel and Button exchanged fastest laps for a while before Vettel began to open the gap and establish a comfortable lead. He was eight seconds ahead before backing off on the final lap.

Behind them, Alonso measured his pace to ensure his tyres would last to the end - they were four laps older than those on the Force India of Paul di Resta behind him.

The Scot took an impressive fourth place after a strong qualifying saw him start sixth, ahead of Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg and Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen.

The second Lotus of Romain Grosjean was seventh, ahead of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, Toro Rosso’s Daniel Ricciardo and Red Bull’s Mark Webber.

After the race, Webber was given a drive-through penalty for passing Kamui Kobayashi off the track around the

outside of Turn Seven on lap 50. Twenty seconds were added to his race time which dropped him down to 11th and promoted Perez to 10th.

The closing stages of the grand prix were enlivened by some exciting racing as closely-packed drivers battled for position.

Massa might have helped secure his Ferrari future with a strong drive, including an improvisational pass on Williams’s Senna into Turn

13. The Brazilian was last at the end of the first lap after picking up a puncture.

And both Sauber drivers lost their front wings in separate incidents with Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg.

Vettel was investigated after the race for an incident at the first safety-car re-start in which he slowed unexpectedly and Button nearly hit him from behind, but after a lengthy deliberation the stewards decided to take no action.
