During a recent meeting between town hall officials and AUAN it was confirmed that the Junta has insisted that large areas included in the proposals by the council are unacceptable.

The area of La Canada is to be completely excluded, and the designation of urban land in Partaloa town, Retamar, Cerro Gordo and Piedra Amarilla must be considerably reduced. All other areas were never considered for inclusion in the proposed plan.

The plan fell foul of two restrictions in the planning laws (POTA and LOUA) which limit the

rate at which urban land can be increased and stipulate that new urban spaces must be created next to existing urban nuclii or settlements of long standing.

Provisional approval must now be given to a much reduced plan and a further period of public consultation is required due to the significance of the changes.

Approval is unlikely to be given until the end of the year.

AlmERiA...The Mayor, Luis Rogelio

Rodríguez Comendador, and the Councillor for Social Care, Pilar Ortega, along with about 450 senior citizens have attended a celebratory meal at the Gran Hotel to mark the culmination of this year’s Vacation Program on Ageing 2010/2011.

This initiative, which is run in collaboration with the Institute for the Elderly and Social Services (Imserso) under the Ministry of Health and Social Policy, makes it possible for senior citizens to enjoy other areas of Spain and Europe in the company of people of their own age.

At the same time it facilitates the maintenance of jobs in hotels during the low season months.

The program has been running for twenty years, during which time almost 8,000 senior citizens have enjoyed leisure and entertainment breaks at very low prices.

Destinations visited have ranged from cultural tours to exploring nature trails through Andalucia, the Balearic Islands, Murcia, Valencia, Catalonia, the Canary Islands and Portugal and Paris.

The trips are for 8 or 15 days, with an option of up to one month. The price includes travel, full board and lodging, though those who prefer could drive themselves in their own vehicles.

Prices range from 170€ for eight days to 200€ for two weeks. The holidays are open to: Any person registered on the Padron in Almería; Anyone of 65 years of age or above, or early retirees of 60 years of age; The spouse must meet the same requirements

These requirements can be disregarded if accompanying a child with disability of 45%.

AlmERiA......................Seventy-seven families in the province of Almeria are now signed

up as part of the foster child protection measures (custody or guardianship).

The Director General of Infancia y Familias de la Consejería para la Igualdad y Bienestar Social, María Teresa Vega, held a meeting with foster families. At the moment a total of 97 children are in foster care, with 6 of them in emergency foster care.

During the meeting, the director explained to families the general lines of work and projects which the Board is working on in the field of foster care.

The foster care program, which has been developed by the Board in the province in collaboration with Red Cross-Almería, is one of the key instruments of the system of child protection in Andalucia.

Search continueS For 22 immigrantS LoSt at SeaThe maritime rescue services

were still searching for 22 Sub-Saharan immigrants who are believed to have fallen into the sea from their patera (rudimentary craft), which was found half sunk approximately 22 nautical miles south of Adra (of the coast of Almería) last Friday. Two babies are believed to be among the 22 who fell into the sea.

29 people were successfully rescued in the early hours of the morning and are being looked after by Red Cross personnel in Motril (Granada). Three men had to be taken to hospital, two of them with hypothermia and the

third with burns as a result of the mixing of fuel and salt water.

Police and coastal rescue services, with the help of a small aircraft, are still combing the area where the boat was found and the area to the south of Melicena (off Granada) which is where the currents would most likely have swept any survivors.

The rescue services have warned that it is unlikely they will find any survivors now as the sea temperature is currently between 16º and 17º, making it difficult for a person to survive in it for more than about ten hours.

mADRiD DEmO CAllS FOR EnD TO nuClEAR POWERHundreds of demonstrators

marched in Madrid Sunday calling for the immediate shutdown of Spain’s nuclear plants in the wake of the Fukushima disaster in Japan.

Protesters marched through the capital at midday shouting slogans including: “Chernobyl, Fukushima...shut down nuclear plants now!” Demonstrators, some wearing gas masks, held banners with slogans such as “Not another Fukushima”, a reference to disaster that hit the Japanese plant following the devastating tsunami on March 11.

“Nuclear power has proven to be a economic, technological, environmental and social failure, that poses a serious to public health,” said a statement from the ecologists, union activists and other political groups behind the

march.They called for the closure

of the Garona power plant in particular, which, having been active since 1971, which is Spain’s oldest. It is the same type of plant as the one at Fukushima. The socialist government ordered the inspection of the country’s six stations in the wake of the Fukushima disaster.

During the 2008 election campaign, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero had promised to gradually reduce nuclear power in favour of renewable energy.

But Spain, which is looking to become less oil dependent, subsequently decided to extend the production life of many of its plants, outraging ecological campaigners.

Andalucia aims to achieve 15 blue flags for its Marinas this year. This award is given by the Asociación de Educación Ambiental y del Consumidor (ADEAC) represented in Spain by the Federación Europea de Educación Ambiental.

The award recognises those ports which meet water quality requirements, facilities for services and information activities, and education and environmental management.

Ports applying include: Ayamonte, Isla Cristina, Punta Umbría and Mazagón in Huelva; Rota, Chipiona and Sancti Petri in Cádiz,

Marina-La Bajadilla and Caleta de Vélez in Málaga, and Adra in Almería, all of which are directly managed by the Agencia Pública de Puertos de Andalucía. However, Marina Isla Canela in Huelva; La Duquesa, Estepona and Puerto Marítimo de Marbella in Málaga, and Marina del Este-Punta de la Mona, in Granada, are managed directly.

In 2010, 84 blue flags were issued to Spanish ports, 13 of which were awarded in Andalucia, which translates as 15.5% of the national total, ranking it in third place, behind the Balearic Islands and Catalonia and preceding Valencia.

BluE FlAGS FOR AnDAluCiA’S PORTS

in CRiSiS-HiT SPAin, lAnGuAGE TRAininG BOOmSSpain’s economic downturn is sending

jobless workers flocking back to school to learn other languages, mainly English, to boost their appeal to employers, providing a boon for language academies.

With an unemployment rate of over 21 percent, the highest in Europe, many of those with a job are also brushing up their languages skills in the hope that this will help them keep it or lead to a more secure position.

“The deeper the crisis, the stronger people’s desire to develop their skills,” said Antonio Murillo Isidoro, 37, the director of expansion at English Connection which runs Spain’s largest network of English language schools.

English Connection plans to open 20 new schools this year, bringing the total to 36. Over the next five years it plans to open a total of 100 schools.

Other private language schools are also growing as is the popularity of going abroad for a short period to learn to speak another language.

About 150,000 Spaniards traveled abroad

to study a language, mostly English, last year, up from 105,000 in 2006 before the start of the economic slump, according to Spanish Association of Promoters of Courses Abroad.

Poor foreign-language skills have long been a weakness of the Spanish workforce.

Nearly one in two Spaniards, or 46.6 percent, cannot speak a foreign language, the fourth highest level in the European Union after Romania, Hungary and Portugal, according to European Union statistics agency Eurostat.

Neither Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero nor the leader of the main opposition Popular Party, Mariano Rajoy, speak English -- although Rajoy said during a radio interview last month that he studies the language for three hours a week and practices it whenever he travels.

Part of the problem is that the vast majority of Spain’s adult population received the bulk of their education while the country was under the sway of dictator General Francisco Franco, who kept the nation isolated.

Banco PoPuLar ProFitS SLumP on

Bad-Loan riSkSBanco Popular, the third-

biggest Spanish bank, reported on Wednesday that first-quarter profits dropped 9.0 percent to 185.7 million euros ($275.5 million) on hefty provisions against bad loans.

But the figure was above market expectations, with analysts consulted by Dow Jones Newswires forecasting profits of 154 million euros.

Like other Spanish banks, Banco Popular is struggling with an economic downturn, brought about by a collapse of the country’s once booming property market in 2008 which has led them to increase provisioning against bad loans.

In the January to March period, the bank said it put

aside 836 million euros.Bad loans as a proportion of

total lending, a key indicator of financial health, climbed 5.44 percent from 4.91 percent a year earlier.

Net interest income -- the difference between interest paid out on deposits and interest earned on lending -- was down 22.3 percent at 515.5 million euros.

Core capital was 9.33 percent of all capital, up from 8.74 percent a year earlier, and above the minimum level set by the Bank of Spain of 8.0 percent this year in a bid to revive market confidence.

The bank had already put aside provisions of 1.834 billion euros in 2010, leading to a 23-percent drop in net profits for the year.

SPAniSH OFFiCiAl JOBlESS DROPS

The number of people out of work in Spain, which has the highest official jobless rate in the developed world, dropped in April after three months of increases, the government said on Wednesday.

There were 4.27 million people out of work last month, down 1.48 percent from March, the labour ministry said.

The number of jobless had reached 4.33 million in March, the highest since the economic crisis began in 2008, and also the most since such statistics were first compiled by the ministry in 1996.

The National Statistics Institute, which uses a different calculation method from the labour ministry, last week said the unemployment rate soared to 21.29 percent in the first quarter, the highest level since the beginning of 1997.

It is also the highest rate in the European Union and in the area covered by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, with figures

twice the averages.

The labour ministry said the drop in April “is the most since 2006 in the same month.”

The secretary of state for employment, Mari Luz Rodriguez, said “the figures show that there is a generalised fall in unemployment.”

Spain’s booming construction industry drew millions of unskilled immigrant workers and generated high levels of economic growth in the decade to 2008.

But the collapse of the property bubble, compounded by the global financial crisis, left many people out of work, especially immigrants and youths.

Any rise in the number of those unemployed and claiming benefit adds to the squeeze on public sector finances just as the government is trying to stamp out market fears that Spain will need an IMF-EU bailout like Greece and Ireland.

ZAPATERO WOulD HAvE PREFERRED A TRiAl, BuT DEFEnDS

uS killinG OF Bin lADEnThe president of the Government,

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has admitted today that, as a democrat, he would have preferred to see Osama Bin Laden in court facing charges like any other terrorist, but also acknowledged that he too would probably have sought his death after such a “bloody career”.

This was Zapatero’s way of justifying his congratulatory message to the USA for Bin Laden’s death after the IU member of parliament, Gaspar Llamazares, described the death as “extra-judicial murder” and an act of “state terrorism”.

The head of the Spanish government also defended the presence of Spanish troops in Afghanistan as necessary

to keep the peace and secure a democratic future for the country and that they will be withdrawn when power has been transferred in accordance with the NATO plan. “Like you, I hope this will be sooner rather than later”, he told Llamazares.

Zapatero added that Llamazares’ opinion on Bin Laden’s death was “quite a minority” opinion and underlined the fact that the international community as a whole has been practically unanimous in its favourable reaction to the death because “it is a step towards greater security and the end of terrorism”.

In his opinion, it is “quite understandable” that “one of the most sadistic criminals of all time” has

died in an operation of this nature undertaken by American forces. “It is very probable,” he added, “that the blood on Bin Laden’s hands sealed his own fate”.

Llamazares, however, disagreed, saying: “I can’t agree. The end does not justify the means and state terrorism is not a legitimate way of fighting terrorism.”

“Mr President,” he went on,”Premeditaded murder is wrong, even if it is againt a terrorist; violating another country’s territory is wrong, even if it is in search of a terrorist; it is wrong to destroy evidence; it is wrong to mock after getting rid of the corpse; none of this is morally right”.

the La rioja region oF SPain iS a SmaLL Province Bordering the BaSque country, known aS the Province oF Seven vaLLeyS.

Visitors can ski in mountain ranges including the Cebollera and La Demanda, cycle through country lanes, hunt, fish or play golf.

But it is wine production that is the biggest contributor to the region’s economy and tasting tours lure many holidaymakers to the area.

The first document to make reference to the safeguarding of quality and guarantee of Rioja wines dates from the year 1650, although the King of Navarre and Aragon gave legal recognition to wines produced in the region as long ago as 1102.

Typical dishes washed down by locals with a glass of Rioja include vegetable stew, lamb stew and pigs trotters.

Around half of the province’s population of just over 300,000 live in the capital city of Logrono,

which lies on the Ebro River and is twinned with Dunfermline in Scotland.

At nearly 35,000 square miles the province of La Rioja in Argentina dwarfs the 2,000 square miles of its Spanish counterpart yet has a slightly smaller population of around 280,000.

It was established after Juan Ramirez de Velasco founded the capital of Todos los Santos de la Nueva Rioja – now known just as La Rioja – in 1591.

The Diaguita tribe made peace with the Spanish who arrived, leading to the colonisation of what the Spanish monk Antonio Vásquez de Espinosa called ‘a bit of Paradise.’

An earthquake in 1894 destroyed many buildings in the city of La Rioja but it was rebuilt and remains a mixture

of European and native architecture.

The terrain of the province is highly mountainous with only scrub vegetation, except in the valleys and basins.

Cattle and sheep farming are widespread as is small-scale mining of copper, silver, and tungsten.

It claims to have the longest history of wine production in Argentina and is the country’s third biggest wine region after Mendoza and San Juan.

Experts say that the Famatina valley, nearly a mile above sea level, is especially suited to producing high quality wines as daytime temperatures drop by half at night, allowing the grapes to recover from the heat, and retain their aroma and freshness.

Somali Pirates

Sentenced To 439

years in JailA Spanish court has

sentenced two Somali pirates to 439 years in jail each for their role in the hijacking of the Alakrana - a tuna fishing boat.

The two men, Cabdiweli Cabdullahi and Raageggesey Hassan Aji, have been detained in a Madrid jail since they were caught after the attack in October 2009.

The court said government-linked bodies paid a ransom to free the vessel, but Spain’s Foreign Minister Trinidad Jiménez denies any money changed hands.

The Alakrana and its 36 crew members were held off Somalia for 47 days.

The Somalis were found guilty of 36 counts of illegal detention and robbery with violence, but absolved of charges of terrorism, membership of an organised crime group and torture. They will serve a maximum of 30 years in jail and were also ordered to pay 100,000 euros to each person detained.

The police have arrested 52 people in Barcelona in their biggest ever operation against organised copper theft.

Before being disbanded, the gang was allegedly stealing, dealing, melting and selling the metal and are believed to be responsible for massive copper thefts at numerous electrical companies and along the Fecsa-Endesa network.

The police operation, which involved more than 180 agents from the autuonomous force - the Mossos d’Esquadra - was centred on the intersection of the Calle Agricultura and Calle Cristóbal de Moura in the Sant Martí district of the city, where a dozen properties have been searched and 52 arrests have been made.

The operation, which began over a year ago and cumlminated with officers being deployed at 5.30 this morning, is still ongoing, with police hoping to locate and arrest another 30 members of the gang, operating primarily in Barcelona, Girona and Lleida.

“The Spanish government has already asked the

The stress tests were approved last March by the European Union and are scheduled to take

These tests are Brussels’ response to the increasingly hot debate on nuclear safety after the crisis at Japan’s Fukushima plant.

Commenting on the possibility of closing plants that do no pass the tests,

A Romanian couple living in Alcantarilla (Murcia) have been arrested and charged with crimes against the family after offering their five-month old daughter to a woman for 5,000 euros.

The incident occurred last Thursday in Alcantarilla’s Calle Mayor, when the couple, aged 29 and 33, approached a woman pushing a pram and pointed out their daughter, telling the woman she could have her for 5,000 euros.

The woman went straight to the National Police in

Alcantarilla to report the incident, which had been witnessed by other passers-by in this, the town’s busiest street.

The baby girl has been taken to a foster home in the area, whilst the parents have been charged with trying to “sell one’s own child to a third person for monetary gain” and summoned to court on May 19th.

The couple face between six months and two years in prison for trying to sell their own child.

The decision to break the alliance comes following the Supreme Court ruling to ban candidates from the newly formed Bildu, a collection of leftist Basque independence parties, from standing in elections on May 22.

Bildu was formed with two legal far-

left Basque parties, Eusko Alkartasuna and Alternatiba, last month after the Supreme Court banned a new Basque pro-independence party called Sortu, arguing it was a successor to Batasuna, the banned political wing of ETA.

But Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba had argued that Bildu was the “Plan B” after Sortu failed to be legalised.

“Bildu is part of ETA’s strategy” he said. “Some of its members have a direct link to the outlawed Batasuna”.

But PNV president Inigo Urkullu said late Monday that his party was “suspending as of now all cooperation and support” for the government in the wake of the court

decision against Bildu.

“We absolutely reject this political illegalisation,” he told a press conference in the Bilbao, the Basque region’s financial capital. Bildu said it would appeal the decision to the Constitutional Court.

The Spanish government, which is seven seats short of an overall majority, passed its 2011 budget thanks to the backing of PNV’s six deputies in the national parliament.

The alliance has ensured the Socialists were able to push through unpopular reforms aimed at fending off market fears that Spain will follow Portugal, Ireland and Greece in the need for an EU bailout.

‘SuPer mePS to coSt at LeaSt £250 miLLion’

PLanS to create a grouP oF 25 ‘SuPer mePS’ aimed at cuLtivating an “eu identity” wiLL coSt taxPayerS at LeaSt £250 miLLion

Under the controversial proposals, the extra MEPs would be elected on top of the Parliament’s existing 751 members from pan-European political parties to represent the whole EU.

It is hoped well-known names or even celebrities would stand as candidates for the 25 places and that one of the new intake would be selected to become a future President of the European Commission.

With the current annual cost of an MEP estimated to be £2m, the proposal would cost at least an additional £50m per year, or £250m over a five-year parliamentary term. The estimated cost for British taxpayers is likely to be at least £6 million per year.

Added to this will be the cost, put at “several million pounds”, of creating a relevant electoral oversight body. All the costs will be borne by EU taxpayers.

The aim is to attempt to cultivate an “EU identity” and boost voter turnout at European elections. The plan has however been denounced as a waste of time and money.

Under proposals approved by the Parliament’s constitutional affairs committee on Monday, voters would face two ballot papers at European elections – the first for their region and a second with lists of candidates selected by EU-wide political parties.

A well-placed parliamentary source said the

costs could “easily” exceed £250m over Parliament’s five-year

mandate.“The extra 25 MEPs would presumably

cost more than current MEPs as they would have to attend ‘constituency’ functions every weekend right

across the EU and they would

probably need added resources to handle the

extra inquiries that they would receive from press and

constituents,” he said.Member states must approve the plan, due to

come into effect for the next European elections in June 2014 but Ashley Fox, a Tory MEP, said: “The last thing the British taxpayer wants to pay for is an extra 25 MEPs elected across Europe plus the cost of a European electoral authority.

“The British government must veto this completely absurd proposal. Trying to pretend that the EU is one single constituency is madness.”

Marta Andreasen, the Ukip MEP, said, “This is the latest attempt to blur national lines, replacing them with a single European entity. It is a crude method to try and plump up federalist support within the European Parliament and it is also grossly expensive.”

Andrew Duff, the Liberal MEP behind the move, defended the extra costs, including that of the electoral body, saying this will have a “small staff whose main job will be to liaise and coordinate with national electoral authorities.”

result; everybody tries to save money, and one of the first things to suffer is the car. do we have to have it serviced? i hear, well the reality is, it is not always a good idea to neglect the old motor, as it can cost you a lot more money further down the line when you least expect it!

so i’m here to tell you about the jobs you should not miss in the hot weather. Firstly, check all your oil levels. Engines use more fluids in hot weather, so check and top-up (do not overfill as this can be just as damaging!) where necessary.

Water: always make sure the header tank is filled to the correct level, with proper cooling fluid that has a higher boiling point, again, do not overfill, Max, means maximum level and no more.tyres suffer dreadfully in the heat. it is well worth checking for any bulges and cuts as these can cause blow-outs, particularly on the cheaper imports. Just remember with tyres generally speaking, you get what you pay for. also, check for uneven tyre wear, as if it’s bad this can also cause blow-outs. on hot days the road temperature can be well in excess of

50 centigrade, and these temperatures will find any faults.

check tyre inFlation: service station air supply can be notoriously inaccurate. buy a little tyre pressure guage (under a fiver) and this will save you lots of euros in fuel economy and extend the tyre life. the handbook will give you the correct pressures, and adjust downwards slightly for higher temperatures (about 2 p.s.i.)

check For overheatinG in traFFic: one of the most common faults I find with overheating cars is the automatic electric cooling fan is not cutting in due to bad connections or a temperature sender is not working. to test, start the engine, leave ticking over until up to temp (middle of guage) and you should hear the fan click in, but caution, stand away from the engine bay as it will start without warning and could cause injury. This fan is vitally important to your engine and pocket! if in any doubt get your local garage to check that it is operating properly. if they charge more than a fiver you’ve been robbed!

in particularly hot

conditions, and under severe braking, brake fluid can overheat, and partially boil. giving a feel of air in the brakes. allow to cool and top up brake fluids, and you should be ok. Keep fluid levels up to the max.

lastly listen to your car. don’t have the radio full blast, or better still, turn it off for a day. if you hear funny noises it’s trying to tell you something! have these investigated before it gets expensive.

Finally, it is always good practice to have your air-conditioning serviced. it is not expensive and only takes half an hour or so, but if you let gas and lubricants run low, it can cost a fortune to put right, with new pumps starting at 500 euros or more!!

Eat calcium-rich foods...Adults should eat at least 700mg of calcium a day,

and 1,200mg if diagnosed with osteoporosis. You could consume 700mg in one day by eating a yoghurt, a cheese sandwich, a handful of almonds and a spinach salad.

get your sunshine quota...your body needs vitamin d to help it absorb calcium.

Vitamin D is found in oily fish, liver, fortified spreads and cereals, and egg yolks. your body also makes its own vitamin d when you’re exposed to sunshine.

Most people get enough vitamin D by spending 15 minutes in the sun two to three times a week. Generally, normal levels that are built up in the summer will be enough to last through the winter.

go easy on the protein...excessive amounts of meat, cheese and protein

make body acid, which drains the body of calcium and weakens bones. keep your diet balanced.

Try to quit smokingthe more you smoke, the more likely you’ll suffer

from osteoporosis. aim to cut down or, better still, quit altogether.

Cut out the saltsalt is thought to speed up the body’s loss of

calcium. Most of us consume 9g of salt a day, but the recommended limit is 6g, which is just a teaspoonful.

Healthy Bones! From our 40s onwards, our bones gradually lose their density as a natural part of ageing. one in two women and

one in five men over the age of 50 will break a bone, mainly because of

osteoporosis. exactly why this happens is still not fully understood - osteoporosis

has no symptoms. Whether you have osteoporosis or just want to build strong bones for the future, there are several

things we can do to maintain our bones.

Be activebones get stronger when you use them. the best

way to strengthen them is to do at least five hours of ‘weight-bearing’ exercise a week. this includes walking, running, dancing, golf, tennis or netball. it doesn’t include cycling or swimming (although swimming is good for staying flexible).

Bones also benefit if you lift and carry things. Weight training is ideal, but carrying shopping, gardening and housework all count.

Drink sensiblyAlcohol, tea, coffee, cola and other fizzy drinks

reduce the amount of calcium you absorb, and weaken bones. stick to the recommended amounts of alcohol, and swap your caffeine-fuelled drinks for water and diluted juice.

Maintain a healthy weightlosing too much weight too fast under a crash diet

can increase your risk of osteoporosis. the same is true if you’re anorexic (or, for women, if you’re so thin that your periods have stopped). Weight loss can cut the amount of oestrogen (a hormone that helps to protect your bones) in your body. if you need to lose weight, do it sensibly.

Immigrants contribute “much more” to the welfare state, especially in education, health and pensions, than they receive, since they now make up 12% of the poulation and yet only account for 5.6% of the use of these services.

This is the main conclusion of a study on “Immigration and the Welfare State in Spain” which has looked into the contribution made by non-Spaniards to the country’s economic growth and the strength of the social security system, and the use they

make of social services, concluding that they actually make a “positive net contribution”.

Even illegal immigrants contribute to the system by paying indirect taxes, consuming goods and doing work that allows Spanish women to get back into the labour market.

“This reality is a direct contrast to the general perception society has and which needs to be reversed through information and education”, stressed the director general of the Fundación la Caixa, Jaime Lanaspa, as he presented the results of the study.

brit tAkes over MoNet gArdeN Joban english gardener has landed one of the most prestigious jobs in French

horticulture, head gardner at the former home of claude monet.James Priest, 53, has been

appointed head gardener at Giverny in Normandy - the former home of the Impressionist artist who painted his famous waterlilies series there.

The appointment means that Mr Priest, from Maghull, Merseyside, becomes a direct successor to Monet himself, who looked after every aspect of the garden until his death in 1926.

Mr Priest, who qualified at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew, said: “Monet is the factor that brings everyone here.

“It’s an Alice in Wonderland Monet world and you have to capture the imagination of all these different nationalities who visit.

“Monet would paint in layers and I think he made his garden in the same way,” he said.

Mr Priest takes over from Gilbert Vahe, the head gardener who was largely responsible for restoring the garden in the late 1970s from an overgrown wilderness to its former glory.

Mr Priest was hired initially for three years but ended up staying for 17 years. He said he first saw the work of the Impressionist painters when he visited Paris as an 18-year-old student, adding: “I like art with emotion.

“I work a lot on emotions; my gardens must speak to people of all nationalities.”

He will take over the running of the garden on June 1.

Monet started to create his flower-filled garden when he moved to Giverny in 1883, refining it over 43 years until his death there in 1926. He originally planted flowers so that he could pick bunches to have something to paint indoors on rainy days.

Some of his most famous paintings were his huge canvases of the waterlilies on the small lake he had made at Giverny, with its green, Japanese-style footbridge draped with wisteria in the spring.

Portugal Recession ‘Will last Two years’Portugal will sink into recession this year

and next due to the terms of its 78bn euro ($116bn; £70bn) rescue deal, its finance minister has said.

Fernando Teixeira dos Santos said austerity measures required as a condition of the funds would see the economy shrink by 2% in 2011 and 2012.

Tax rises and privatisations will form part of a major economic restructuring.

The head of the European mission said the terms of the bail-out were “tough” but “necessary and fair”.

Under the deal there will be an additional programme of privatisations, and pensions exceeding 1,500 euros will be cut. The sales tax on some products will rise.

The aim is to cut Portugal’s deficit of 9.1% - three times the eurozone’s limit - to 3% by 2013.

Juergen Kroeger, who led the EC mission, told reporters at a press conference in Lisbon that 52bn euros of loans would come from the EU and rest from the IMF.

But as part of the deal Portugal had to tackle imbalances in the economy, and restructuring the banking sector was necessary, he said.

He accepted that the changes being demanded were “front-loaded” and would be “painful”, but they were needed to address urgent issues.

“These are major structural reforms that are aimed at fostering competitiveness,” he said.

Mr dos Santos said that the restructuring would be tough for the Portuguese people, but added: “This is a programme aimed at returning to growth and employment.”

Other measures to be taken would be changes to labour market laws and social benefits.

The agreement includes up to 12bn euros for the stricken banking sector to recapitalise and a requirement that they raise the amount of capital held in reserve to cushion them against a further financial crisis.

Public spending cuts already announced have sparked widespread protests in Portugal and prompted the fall of the government.

Under a European directive, herbal medicines on sale in shops will have to be registered.

Products must meet safety, quality and manufacturing standards, and come with information outlining possible side-effects.

The Medicines and Health care Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said there had been 211 applications for approval, with 105 granted so far and the rest still under consideration.

Some herbal practitioners fear the move could threaten their businesses.

Commonly used ingredients already registered include echinacea, used against colds, St John’s wort, used by some for depression and anxiety, and valerian, claimed as a natural remedy for insomnia.

Research conducted for the MHRA in 2009 showed that 26% of UK adults had taken a herbal medicine in the past two years.

The agency said it is hoping to promote a more cautious approach to using herbal medicines after the study findings found that more than half of people – 58% – believe the products are safe because they are natural.

The agency said there had been a number of health alerts over unlicensed herbal medicines over the years.

In February the MHRA issued a warning about the herbal weight loss product Herbal Flos Lonicerae (Herbal Xenicol) Natural Weight Loss Formula after tests showed it contained more than twice the prescribed dose of a banned substance.

Sexy cat eyes are a cool look for night. The key to this look is to apply a thin line to the inside rims of the lids. Make sure to sharpen the pencil after lining...

Step 1: Holding the skin of your upper lid taut, dot liquid liner along the upper lash line as close to the eye as possible. Apply line from corner to corner of eye, extending the line upward at the outer corner of eye. Let liner dry for a few minutes before touching. To soften this look (black liquid liner can be harsh), try a smudge-able pencil in a lighter color like dark brown or charcoal.

Step 2: Hold down the lower lid and apply liner only to the outer three quarters of the rim. Fade out the line as you approach the tear duct. Extend the liner upwards at the outer corners.

For a softer version of this look, use an eye shadow brush and sweep a taupe or brown color on the lower lash line.

juice cocktaiL ‘good For heart’A blend of fruit juices,

including grape, cranberry and blackcurrant, may have benefits for the heart, research suggests.

French scientists tested the blend on pig arteries in the lab, and found it caused artery walls to relax. The study adds weight to evidence fruit and veg reduces heart disease risk, says the British Heart Foundation.

The researchers looked for a chemical called polyphenol in fruit and berries. They found

the most active fruits included blackcurrant, blueberry, aronia (choke berries), cranberry, lingonberry and grape.

Commenting on the study, Tracy Parker, heart health dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, said: “This research adds more weight to evidence that eating fruit and vegetables is good for us in terms of reducing our risk for heart disease. However, we still don’t fully understand why, or whether certain fruits

and vegetables are better than others. Even this study acknowledges that scientists can’t yet explain any link. What we do know is that we should all eat a wide range of fruit and veg as part of a balanced diet, and fruit juice is a tasty and handy way of doing this.

“Don’t forget though, juice contains less fibre and more sugar than the original fruit so it only counts as one of our five-a-day.”

Depression has become something of a modern-day epidemic.

One in four people in the UK suffers with it at some point in their lives and GPs now issue record numbers of prescriptions for anti-depressants — more than 30 million a year. Economists say it costs Britain around £17 billion in sick leave and lost productivity.

Causes range from having a family history of the problem or suffering a major trauma, to chronic stress and money worries.

But now some experts are arguing that these negative effects of Britain’s depression ‘crisis’ hide the fact that, for some people, it can be a positive life-changing experience that leaves them tougher, more resilient and more creative.

Some even argue that depression may not be an illness at all, but an evolutionary survival mechanism that helps us cope with life’s crises by forcing us to reassess our priorities.

‘Nobody would choose to have depression because it can be a really unpleasant experience,’ says Dr Paul Keedwell, a psychologist and psychiatrist based at Cardiff University.

‘But you have to wonder why it is such a common condition and why it has not been bred out through evolution. Perhaps it’s because we need something that makes us put the brakes on every now and then and reassess

our goals and strategies.

‘We need to meet our own needs in order to thrive and be loved and be part of a social group. Sometimes we can learn to do that through the pain of depression.’

Some argue depression helps us cope with life’s crises

lives. In fact, the majority had more

vitality, improved social lives and were performing better at work.

The evolutionary theory raises another key question — are too many people with mild to moderate depression being encouraged to rely on antidepressants to make them feel better, rather than confront the issues underlying their mental state and become stronger as a result?

Moreover, Professor Peter

Kinderman, a member of the British Psychological Society, says mild to moderate depression can have a positive effect and should not be regarded as a medical complaint but a normal reaction to life’s ups and downs.

‘We know that when someone is profoundly depressed it is completely different from their normal state of being,’ he says. ‘But that does not mean it’s abnormal. It’s part of being alive.’

But if suffering mental health problems really can be beneficial, experts agree it’s only likely to apply to those with mild to moderate depression — the majority of cases.

Where the cause is fairly obvious — such as bereavement or relationship break-up — it can act as a catalyst to re-evaluate what is important in life.

‘For example, if you don’t get the grades at university you might get upset and that’s completely normal,’ Professor Kinderman says.

‘Then you reflect on the choices and mistakes you made and you come out of it with a different sense of motivation. We need this evolutionary system to allow us to cope with rejection and disappointment, and the normal ups and downs of life.’

But when there is no apparent reason for a slump in mental wellbeing, it’s much less likely to have any benefit.

This is a state of mind that doctors call anhedonia: the kind of clinical depression where things that used to bring great joy — prized possessions, favourite places and loving relationships — no longer do.

When sufferers fall this low, it can be hard for them to focus on the problems that have caused their decline, or make changes that might get them out of it.

by forcing us to reassess our priorities

This controversial idea, that depression might do some of us good in the long run, is backed up by a recent study carried out in the Netherlands.

It analysed the effects of depression on 165 people by looking at how well they coped with life’s stresses and strains before and after their mental breakdown. The researchers expected to find patients were left chronically disabled by their experience, struggling to cope in their domestic and working

Our services are available throughout Spain. You have been eligible since April 2006 to transfer your froxen UK pen-

sions via Qrops and take huge benifits they offer. You may now receive your whole retirement fund providing you are be-

tween the ages of 18 and 75, not resident in the UK and are not in receipt of an income from your pension.

What are the choices UK pension vs Qrops?UK pension “Leave things as they are and receive a tax free lump sum and an income you cannot live comfortably on for thr rest of your life.”

or Qrops “Transfer your pension via Qrops and receive your whole fund as a lump sum, this could then be invested to produce a better tax free income for your retirement. There are no restrictions on what your money may be spent on.”Too many things are against UK pensions, Taxation, Charges, Commissions,

poor growth, exchange rates to name but a few. In addition you can no longer contribute to your pension so this has a damaging effect. An average annuity rate calculates that it would cost 26,000 pounds ofyour pension pot to produce 1,000 pounds gross income per year.

Therefor a fund of 100,000 pounds would give you 25,000 tax free and an income of 187.50 permonth. Could you live on that in retirement?

WHy WE CRAvE SuGARy SnACkS ..............AnD nOT FRuiT AnD vEGIt is the question that has foxed dieters and scientists alike: Why

do we crave sugary snacks or fat-laden junk foods and not more healthy options such as, say, an apple? Some claim to have ‘a sweet tooth’, or ‘a salt tooth’. And many believe cravings are the body’s way of telling them what they need. But how true is that really?

Experts believe that cravings occur for a variety of reasons. They attribute them to evolution, psychological factors such as stress and unhappiness, and - sometimes - a genuine need for certain foods: ‘It’s crucial to remember that a food craving is not simply hunger,’ says Professor Andrew Hill, Head of the Academic Unit of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences at Leeds University.

Hunger is the body’s way of making sure it is provided with

WHAT yOuR CRAvinGS ARE TRyinG TO TEll yOu...

CHOCOlATE AnD SWEETS: ‘Cravings for these are usually down to a psychological desire for a food that makes you feel better and gives a short-term ‘’fix’’. Dark chocolate contains magnesium, antioxidants and iron - so there is unquestionably some nutritional benefit,’ says nutritionist Zoe Harcombe.

PiZZA, PASTA, CRiSPS: ‘It may be an example of wheat intolerance in the case of pizza and pasta - ironically if we’re intolerant of things we crave them,’ suggests Harcombe.

‘One theory is that if we don’t digest or absorb foods properly, we desire them more as the body isn’t getting what it needs from the food. For instance, diabetics can’t regulate their blood sugar, leading to low energy levels. But if the condition is uncontrolled they crave sugary foods, as the body believes it isn’t getting enough.’

FiSH: Should you crave salmon, it could be a need for Omega3 fats. ‘Some new evidence suggests that taste receptors respond to certain fatty acids,’ says Dr Gibson. ‘Maybe our system is aware of their presence. Tuna could be a need for salt - especially in a low-fat dieter who eats lots of fruit and vegetables but little meat or fish and is getting little sodium,’ says Harcombe.

‘Dieters are eating more potassium by consuming large amounts of fruit and vegetables, so they need to balance it out with more sodium.’

DAiRy: ‘Milk contains key nutrients, and if you crave cheese, you may need the fatsoluble Vitamins A and D, especially if you have a lowfat diet,’ says Harcombe.

mEAT: It seems obvious - but some experts believe a meat craving means the body needs protein. Dr Gibson says: ‘A desire to eat red meat could be attributed to iron deficiency - especially in pregnant women.’

energy, in the form of nutrients from food. When the stomach is empty, it releases the hormone ghrelin, which communicates with the brain’s command centre, the hypothalamus. This creates the feeling of hunger and is how we know when to eat.

Satiation is signalled by the release of the hormones leptin by fat cells, and insulin by the pancreas, in response to increased blood sugar. Cravings, however, are much more complex.

‘Those who are starving will eat literally anything - even foods they do not enjoy - to stay alive,’ says psychologist Dr Leigh Gibson, Reader in Biopsychology at Roehampton University.

‘Cravings, on the other hand, are an overwhelming sensation of desire for a certain food. There are a number of chemicals in the brain that are associated with this...From an evolutionary point of view, junk food cravings are linked to prehistoric times when the brain’s opioids and dopamine reacted to the benefit of high-calorie food as a survival mechanism...‘We are programmed to enjoy eating fatty and sugary substances, and our brains tell us to seek them out. Today, we still have the same chemical reactions to these so-called hyper-palatable foods, causing an unignorable desire - despite there being less of a nutritional need for them.’

She has performed with The Rolling Stones and has sung duets with Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, Luciano Pavarotti, John Mellencamp, Kid Rock, Michelle Branch, and Sting among others. She has performed backing vocals for Tina Turner, Don Henley and Belinda Carlisle, on her 1991 hit Little Black Book.

Crow has released seven studio albums, two compilations, and a live album, and has contributed to film soundtracks. She has sold 16 million albums in the United States and 35 million albums worldwide and her newest album, 100 Miles from Memphis, was released on July 20, 2010.

Recently she appeared on NBC’s 30 Rock, ABC’s Cougar Town, Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana Forever and Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear.

In 2010, Crow contributed the original spoken-word track “My Name is Mwamaroyi” to the Enough Project and Downtown Records’ Raise Hope for Congo compilation. Proceeds from the compilation fund efforts to make the protection and empowerment of Congo’s women a priority, as well as inspire individuals around the world to raise their voice for peace in Congo.

A&M Records released Crow’s seventh studio album, 100 Miles from Memphis, on July 20, 2010. The album has a classic soul vibe and features lead single “Summer Day.” 100 Miles from Memphis, the distance from her hometown to the music mecca, is an ode to her formative memories of music - and one that the label hopes can inspire young music fans to investigate the landscape beyond processed pop and Auto-Tune.

a Bug’S eye view:a Bug’S eye view:the stunning close-ups of world’s most unusual creepy crawliesWith their bulging goggle-

eyes and technicolour skin tones, these bizarre but beautiful creatures could be aliens sent from outer space.

But as foreign as they may seem, they are in fact some of the world’s most unusual creepy crawlies, caught on camera in minute detail.

From a Giant Malaysian Shield Praying Mantis posing with elegance for the camera, to a Schizocephala mantis capturing a fly in mid-air, these incredible close up pictures of

insects are a sight to behold.

They were taken by biochemist and photographer Igor Siwanowicz who has spent the last seven years carefully acquiring and breeding these strange insects. He has worked to painstakingly document these beautiful creatures, who, mimicking flowers to growing fearsome horns, have all developed their own ways of surviving the wild.

Taken in a home studio in Munich, Germany, these are the latest images from his ever growing collection. Igor studies the habits and physiology of these compelling creatures, which gives him the edge when it comes to producing thought-provoking imagery.Igor cites his main influence as the works of the designer of the monster from the Alien films, HR Giger who was obsessed with the paradox of turning the human form into an alien one.

motorola mobile - the First Smartphone to operate using

Fingerprint recognitionIt is the mobile phone

designed to appeal to a man’s inner James Bond - or those with secrets.

The Motorola ATRIX is the first smartphone to operate using fingerprint recognition to ensure it can only be accessed by the genuine owner.

The ATRIX owner swipes their finger on the touchscreen a number of times when it is fresh out of the box to identify them as the authorised user. From that point on, every time they touch the power button it will recognise the fingerprint and approve operation.

The ATRIX is marketed as the most powerful smartphone in the world on the basis it can be plugged into a range of docks that convert it into a laptop, personal computer, media centre, or a sat-nav. There is an eye-catching ‘lapdock’, which looks like a slimline laptop but has no computer processor. Here the phone sits in a cradle while the dock is used like a normal laptop.

A second dock turns the phone into a home computer. It connects the handset to a screen via a cable, while it has a number of USB ports and Bluetooth wireless links to a full-size mouse and keyboard.

The ATRIX software, called ‘Webtop’, then allows the keyboard, mouse and screen to be used as a full-size computer, including the sort

of internet browser normally found on a home PC. The handset’s software also includes an entertainment centre that is controlled via an infrared remote control that communicates with the dock. Using this, it is possible to connect the phone to a high-definition TV or speakers to play back films and music.

The ATRIX has a dual core processor, which allows for fast operation, two antennae for simultaneous downloading and uploading from the web, plus a large on-board memory.

Other benefits include a four-inch high-definition screen, a five mega-pixel camera and a video camera on the front for video calling.

Jeremy Marks, of Spymaster, the leading professional suppliers of security equipment, said: ‘Biometric fingerprint security is the best way to protect your device. This type of technology offers consumers a new level of security surpassing anything we have seen before on a smartphone.’

Owners in the U.S. have been impressed with the ground-breaking security feature. One said: ‘All phones should have a fingerprint reader like this - it’s the future.

‘Typing in an unlock password is so fiddly that I don’t bother with unlock security (and that worries me).’

ninE milliOn inTERnATiOnAl TOuRiSTS HiT SPAin....................Spain received 9 million international

tourists in the first three months of the year, according to figures drawn up by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade and published by the Frontur opinion poll. This represents an increase of 2.9% over the same period last year.

This increase is nearly ten times higher than the 0.3% registered in the first quarter of 2010. Particularly noticeable, were the increases in tourists from the Netherlands (22.3%), Belgium (20%), Switzerland (14.8%), Scandinavia (11.7%) and Italy (10.9%).

However, the UK remained Spain’s number one market, with 1.8 million tourists (albeit a decrease of 4.8% from 2010), followed by Germany with 1.47 million (3.7% less), and France with 1.2 million (2.7% more than last year).

In March, international tourist arrivals rose 0.6% to 3.5 million passengers, the Ministry said, recalling that last year’s Easter Week (Semana Santa) began in this month.

canary islands most Popular........................................The Canary Islands was the main destination for 30.6%, or 2.7 million of all

international tourists in the first quarter, representing an increase of 15.2% over the same period last year.

This was followed by Catalonia, with just over two million tourists, or 22.9% of all arrivals, but still a decrease of 1.1% over the first quarter of 2010.

Andalusia, in third place, accounted for 13.6% of arrivals, or 1.23 million passengers, and 0.9% less than last year.

The autonomous region of Madrid received 894,628 tourists, a 0.1% increase, while Valencia recorded an increase of 3%, to 825,403 tourists.

In contrast, the Balearic Islands, with 511,112 tourists, registered a decrease of 11.8%.

getting to Spain................Most travellers (79.9%) chose to fly to

Spain, which was 3.4% more than in the first quarter from the same period of 2010, while tourists travelling by road increased by 1.3% to 17.4%. Tourists choosing other modes of transport, e.g. train or boat, fell by 0.6%.

In choosing accommodation, 63% of tourists opted for staying in hotels, which represented an increase of 2.3%. The hotel trade registered an increase of 4.9% in reservations, and the use of privately owned or family homes fell by 0.5%.

Finally, when organising their trip, 69.9% of tourists chose to come to Spain without booking a package tour, a 3.8% increase on last year, and the remainder who did book a package tour, translates to an increase of 1.7% over the same period of 2010.

A fabulous privately designed detached property on

a 2600m2 plot in the beautiful countryside outside of Oria, this house has stunning, well laid out gardens that

lead to a 10m x 4m low maintenance salt water pool. The pool

is situated in its own 17m x 12m enclosed area at the rear of the property

providing a real sun trap which, along with a ‘solar’ pool cover, gives many months of use each year. The fully walled garden has many different seating areas in which to either sun

worship or find much needed shade. The gardens boast a quadrant BBQ

area, an external fully fitted kitchen and an outstanding double conservatory

which opens in the warmer months to provide a fly free area, everything that could be needed for that al fresco dining experience. Beyond the pool is another area planted out

with almond and olive trees and at the front of the property is a covered

terrace area facing west, giving good shade w e l l into the afternoon on those hot summer days. The private driveway leading to the garage at the rear of the house allows space for four or more cars.

The luxury and style of this property will strike you from all angles but none more than the lounge, 8mtrs long and, like the rest of the property, very tastefully decorated. Having two windows as well as french doors leading onto the terrace, the lounge is light and airy and features a state of the art, wall mounted catalytic gas fire for when the nights cool down. Next to the lounge is the fully fitted modern kitchen which has a vast amount of units with black marble worktops, complemented by beautiful crystal studded wall tiles! Needless to say appliances of the highest standard, including dishwasher and touch control hob, are all fitted.

The UK government is about to sign a landmark agreement with switzerland which will oblige swiss banks to tax interest payments made to UK taxpayers. The days of hiding money in switzerland are long over and legitimate approved tax planning arrangements are the only way forward.Last october the UK and swiss governments signed a joint declaration to work

towards taxing UK owned swiss bank accounts. The head of HM revenue & Customs (HMrC), Dave Hartnett, has now told tax experts that the terms of the new agreement will be announced in May.The Treasury estimates that UK taxpayers have £125 billion hidden in swiss banks

and that it will earn between £3 billion and £6 billion over the next few years as a result of the deal.An article in The sunday Times included a list of terms supplied by tax advisers

familiar with the discussions. It is expected that swiss financial institutions will start to deduct a withholding

tax from interest and dividend payments. There was speculation that the tax rate would be between 25% and 35%, but on 2nd May the financial Times reported that, according to a source familiar with the negotiations, the withholding tax rate

sWITzerLAnD AboUT To sTArT TAxIng UK oWneD bAnK ACCoUnTsbY bILL bLeVIns, fInAnCIAL CorresponDenT, bLeVIns frAnKs

will be 50%, though we do not have official confirmation yet. While this withholding tax will apply from the start date, investors will have to pay

a separate one-off levy in recognition of past unpaid taxes. The money collected in withholding taxes will be collectively handed over to the

UK Treasury and will not include any details of who has paid them. Under the agreement, however, swiss banks will be obliged to hand over financial

details on individual accounts in situations where HMrC makes a specific request and can demonstrate that a swiss bank has been used to evade taxes. The only way to lower your tax bill is through professional guidance and legitimate

Do you own a property in Spain as a non-resident? Did you know that you should be paying income tax in Spain?

There can often be confusion around the taxes that are to be paid in Spain when you own a property but do not live here. You pay tax when you first buy the property, and from then on you will not only have to pay local rates once yearly, and rubbish tax quarterly but also a NON-RESIDENTS TAX.

The Spanish tax office class ownership of a property here as an income, even if you are not renting the property out and only use it for personal use. This LEGALLY OBLIGES YOU to pay a tax based on the cadastral value of your property every year between the months of January and December. Many people are not aware of this tax, and it should be known that if it is not paid annually, you may be liable for FINES, and the legal requirement of back- paying every year that you have not paid it. The good news is that the Spanish Authorities abolished the Wealth Tax in 2008, so the amount you have to pay now is around 60% less.

If you don´t speak Spanish or don´t want the hassle of dealing with the Spanish tax office, at MUNDIABOGADOS SOLICITORS we can advise you regarding the taxes in Spain that are applicable to you and your particular situation. We can also prepare all the tax forms for you and pay them on your behalf.

We run a friendly, efficient, bilingual (English and Spanish) office at Buganvillas roundabout, Vera Playa. Feel free to call in or telephone us for an appointment and more information.

viewpoint

www.hotelcostanarejos.com

Not many people are lucky enough to have had jobs or been involved in a profession that they absolutely loved and would not have changed had they had the opportunity to do so. And for many who have, it was either through sheer luck that they found themselves in their dream job, or – as in my lady wife’s case - they knew exactly what they wanted from an early age and pursued their ambition.

As a child, my wife never had any doubt in her mind that one day she would become a hairdresser. She progressed from giving her dolls shampoo and sets and, if they were not quick enough on their feet and able to leg it, just about every neighbour in the street got the treatment as well. The dogs and cats in that particular part of Erdington were the best groomed in the Midlands. If it moves, perm it, was the future Mrs. Bird’s motto.

As a reward for her efforts, she was lucky enough to have been accepted into what was then the crème de la crème in hair stylist circles – Raymond’s in Birmingham. Known as Mr. Teasy Weasy, Raymond was the first ever celebrity stylist and his salons were frequented by the rich and famous, and although the London salon was on paper, the flagship of his empire, the Birmingham New Street salon was acknowledged as the superior establishment.

Her apprenticeship – because that’s what it was then – lasted three years, followed by a two year period as a junior stylist. That’s five full years before she was able to command a good salary as a top stylist.

I on the other hand, traveled a very different route. Having

been offered a job in the Civil Service at one of two high profile Ministries in London, I consciously turned it down, and embarked on a career of, well . . . not embarking on a career. I have worked in the restaurant business and in a factory making tins. I have been a chauffeur a direct salesman and a village postie to name but a few; so the two of us could not have been more different in that respect. It was undoubtedly an unwise move on my part and I had my moments of doubt over the years, particularly on those occasions when money was in short supply, but just like my wife, it was the path I chose for the life that I wanted to live.

It goes without saying that as a civil servant, I would have attained great heights as a Whitehall Mandarin; been retired off at age 35 with a pension that resembled a telephone number complete with area code, and be living off the fat of the land in a Sunningdale mansion.

But - and this is the important bit – I would never have met my good lady on the story book island of Bermuda where we lived, or seen and resided in other wonderful locations in the UK and overseas. I would not be blessed with the circle of friends that I have, and would probably never have considered moving to Spain.

I may on the other hand have decided to purchase a nice little pad in Monaco, but then how can you begin to compare Monte Carlo with Los Dolses, Costa Blanca?

In short, my life would have been poorer and I would have missed out on some incredible and memorable experiences had I chained myself to a life of routine, and what for me would

have been a painfully tedious existence.

All of this went through my mind as a result of experiencing some of the jumped up little jobsworths who occupy positions that involve dealing with the public. They are in every country of course, but they seem to have more than their fair share in Spain, and we have all had less than pleasant experiences whether it be at the Ayuntamiento, health clinic, or dealing with service providers. It makes you wonder why people who are so darned obnoxious and unhelpful, choose to take jobs that put them in such close contact with their fellow human beings. Power, I suppose, is the short answer.

And it’s not only in this particular area of employment that you find individuals who are simply not suited to the job. Take my own case.

I once worked in the roofing trade for several years, but I cannot stand heights . . . how bleeding daft is that. And on a boys night out once many years ago, we got lost (yeah right) and found ourselves in a seedy little strip club in London’s Soho. Strippers often use props in their acts, like snakes or slidy poles, umm . . . or so I am reliably informed. But on this occasion the lady did a ventriloquist act along with the taking off of her clothes. Trouble was, she had long since lost any vestige of youth, was uglier than a cement mixer and was decidedly not stripper material, so it wasn’t long before we were yelling for her to strip the dummy.

Conclusion - to be able to spend your working life in a happy environment, doing something that you love and are entirely suited to, has to be worth more than diamonds.

They finally got him! The World has finally seen the end of al Quaeda’s leader, Osama bin Laden. Opposite Sadam Hussein, the Americans did not find him in a hole in the ground, but in a million-dollar compound in Abbotabad, 35 miles north of Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital. “Justice has been done”, “bin Laden, a terrorist who is responsible for the murder of thousands of men, women and children,” Obama said. “It is a great success that he has been found and will no longer be able to pursue his campaign of global terror.” Prime Minister David Cameron has said. “I congratulate President Obama and those responsible for carrying out this operation.” As could be expected, the reaction from the Islamic extremists was very different. “Please let them celebrate, they are celebrating their own end,” said Abu Aziza on the Islamic Awakening forum. “Oh Allah, destroy this nation for their hatred and enmity towards your deen (religion).” “Oh God, please make this news not true… God Curse you Obama,” said one message on an Arabic language forum. “Oh Americans… it is still legal for us to cut your necks.” ‘Asad al-Jihad 2’, a “prominent member of the jihadist internet community” declared: “”We will take our revenge on behalf of the Islamic Ummah for the death of the Sheikh of Islam…. Whoever wishes this to be the end of jihad or a means to weaken the organisation, I say to him. Wait a little!” Pretty scary, hu?

I am normally capable of making a decision, but I admit that I cannot decide which I found the most hilarious, Princess Beatrice’s hat, the designer’s remark that he was inspired by “beauty and elegance”, or the remarks and photo shop mock-ups of the hat that appeared on Internet after “The Big Wedding”. It is not politically correct to call a young woman “ugly” – but if anybody aspires to the description, it must be the two frumpy offspring of the “Duchess of Pork”. One comment on the Internet stated boldly that “The Royal sisters are NOT UGLY. They are most attractive young ladies” – It seems like the Duchess found time to go on Internet in between selling out her ex-husband to the press and building up enormous debts! Someone gave them an advice, which I sincerely think they should take, by writing “With styles that suit their figure and faces they could look really nice and pretty. Some one should take them in hand and help to sort out their tastes”. And I would add: Whatever you do, do not let that someone be your mom! O would some power the giftie gie us to see ourselves as others see us. (Robert Burns).

Election time is approaching, and the names of the candidates are being revealed. Our local newspaper had a big article about the increasing

appearance of immigrants on the lists of candidates. Officially “immigrants” are all non-EU-citizens. Unofficially, and the understanding by layman here in Spain, “immigrants” are all non-Spanish-citizens. And thus the confusion begins! Anyway, to attract immigrant-votes, the parties add non-Spanish to their list of candidates. But, they are very clever buggers! They put them at the bottom of the list, because here in Spain the electoral system is party-list proportional representation, so the voters vote for parties instead of for individual candidates. Further it is a closed list system, meaning that the order in which a party’s listed candidates get elected is pre-determined, moving from the top towards the bottom. So you see; last ones on the list end up being “token” candidates. Pretty clever!

A sure sign of it being an election year is that the politicians are running around like head-less chickens trying to woo the voters. The ones in power are bragging about their “achievements”, and the other side is bragging about how, they could have done it better. Seems that this was already the custom and practice in 1956, when H.L. Mencken said: “Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule - and both commonly succeed, and are right”.

now that we have all calmed down a bit, let us take a more measured look at the Wedding.

Without a doubt it was a fantastic spectacle – we do pageantry so well! i think we do pageantry better than any other nation, including the chinese and the americans. our pageantry has a dignity borne of history, not brash, not jingoistic, just plain class, because that’s what we are, sir!

even if it had been kermit marrying Miss Piggy, and not a handsome young man who may one day be king marrying an exceptionally attractive young lady who may one day be Queen, it would still have been a splendid occasion.

everything was perfect – almost!

i will long remember the pomp and circumstance, but in an abstract way. My enduring m e m o r i e s that will f o r e v e r separate this demonstration of british excellence from any other will be the face of little Grace van cutsem, who expressed her 3 year old opinion so silently but so eloquently!

then there was the impromptu gymnastic performance by the verger ben hewer (sorry if i’ve mis-spelt your name, ben). he described in his joyous cartwheels the feelings of the watching public, and proved that vergers are fun people.

another person for whom the occasion demanded a spontaneous demonstration was the policeman (name unknown, and i hope that he

didn’t get told off by some humourless superior). as the barriers came down he gestured to the crowd to applaud, and for several minutes he conducted his own private choir of several thousand voices in a cappella cheering.

My heart goes out to the unfortunate Guardsman who was, as they say, ‘unhorsed.’ how many hours of labour had he put in to get himself and his horse more than shiny bright, when an equine attack of the jitters caused them to part company in front of the world’s cameras? can there be a measure for the amount of embarrassment he must have felt as he picked up his helmet and trudged back to

barracks?but my abiding and most

uplifting memory is of the Great british

Public, those thousands of ordinary Joes and Joannas, who stood j a m m e d

t o g e t h e r cheek by jowl

for hours, happy for the briefest of

glimpses of the newly weds.

if you could have channelled and sold the good humour of that crowd to the national Grid, i reckon you could have powered the Greater london area for at least a week!

in these days when a crowd is so often synonymous with trouble, it does my heart good to see that a mass of people can demonstrate happily and peacefully – that it is possible to have a peaceful demonstration!

memories are made of this..

The latest fad is guilt-free, gorgeous to look at and decidedly girlie. You sprinkle your salad with flowers, marvel at its prettiness and then tuck in for an on-trend eating experience.

M&S and Waitrose have both just launched edible flower ranges.

Waitrose has packets of stalkless violas or nasturtiums, while M&S has an exotic baby spinach, pak choi and mizuna salad decorated with violas, which it hopes will make for ‘an interesting talking point at this year’s summer BBQ’.

No doubt they will, but edible flowers have been bubbling under in the restaurant scene for several years. You might remember the 2009 MasterChef winner Mat Follas decorating his winning dishes with a variety of flowers foraged close to his home in Dorset.

If you think a flower might be hard to swallow, don’t fret. The M&S violas, as with all the flowers used correctly for eating, are small and light.

The topside has a vaguely furry texture, similar to some salad leaves, and they add welcome variety to your usual lunchtime greenery.

young american winS maStercheF titLeBar manager Tim

Anderson has been crowned the youngest ever winner of MasterChef after weeks of intense competition in the BBC1 culinary challenge.

The 26-year-old American, known for his experimental dishes, now plans to build his own food empire.

Judge and presenter John Torode said his cooking was the “best culinary explosion” the programme had ever seen.

Viewers have watched Mr Anderson battle his way through 11 weeks, winning a place in the 20 who started the contest through to the finals screened this week, alongside Tom Whitaker and Sara Danesin.

Their final challenges included making lunch in the Australian rainforest, catering for a wedding in 35C (95F) heat, cooking at three of New York’s finest restaurants and preparing a three-course menu for some of the chefs who had mentored them during the series.

His final meal for Torode and fellow judge Gregg Wallace involved a complex array of “slider” sandwiches, themed to a trio of cities, a Japanese noodle dish with truffled lobster and a selection of British puddings.

Delighted Mr Anderson, who has been married for three years to Laura, said: “It is such a good feeling. I’m very proud of the accomplishment and I’m just so glad that John and Gregg liked my food.

“Tom and Sara are outstanding cooks and I never really thought I had a chance to beat

either of them. Looking back on all the amazing cooks that left before me, it is really quite humbling to have come out on top. Humbling but super awesome at the same time.”

Torode said: “I think all three were amazing, but Tim was in a different world altogether. He had influences from Norway, Japan, America, Australia and the UK. That all coming together gave us the best culinary explosion that we’ve ever seen in MasterChef.”

Wallace said: “Inventive is one thing but inventive and delicious is nothing short of incredible.”

Mr Anderson was raised in Wisconsin until he was 18 and and moved to Los Angeles to attend college. He later lived in Japan, which sparked a keen interest in the kitchen and he has been cooking seriously for four years.

Despite fearing he had blown it at one stage, he bounced back, thanks to the other contestants.

“Some of their ideas were really inspiring, and on top of that their skill level constantly challenged me to learn new methods and techniques,” he said.

This column hopes to introduce and clarify some of these different Spanish wine regions, their characteristics and what makes these wonderful wines and areas worth searching for.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Years ago I went to a wedding in Piñel de Arriba, a small pueblo in Castilla y Leon. In a place of 142 denizens it was a festive day for the entire village. Standing on the esplanade above I watched the wonderful procession of literally everyone coming out to give the young bride warm wishes and kisses, as she wound her way up the narrow streets to the old church.

Further on the view opened to rolling hills dotted with small pueblos, each surrounded by vineyards sloping down to the banks of the Duero river. This is the heart of the Ribera del Duero denominacion de origin. Peñafiel in Valladolid with its beautiful castle and wine museum and Aranda de Duero in Burgos with its many wine shops and

restaurants are considered the capitals of this wine region.Ribera del Duero is a foreign blooded cousin to the pure

blood Rioja. They maintain their strong preference for tempranillo grape (aka tinta del país or tinto fino) however 25% cabernet sauvignon, merlot and/or malbec are allowed to be blended with the tinta del pais. Although relatively recently this area has gained international fame for its high quality wines, this region has actually been one of Spain’s best kept secrets for many years. From Burgos and Soria to the east try the Cillar de Silos and Condado de Haz wines. Flowing in a westerly direction through Valladolid along the mythical “milla de oro de vino,” Spain’s golden wineries can be found. Look for fantastic wines by Viña Pedrosa, Arzuaga or Matarromera. If you feel like being a big spender the mythical wines from the Vega-Sicilia bodega and Pingus, the most expensive Spanish wine, can also be found along these shores.

mini lemon meringue PiesinGREDiEnTS200g (7oz) pack of fresh dessert shortcrust pastry12tbsp lemon curd1 medium egg white50g (1¾oz) caster sugar

mETHODPreheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°/gas 6.Roll out the pastry to 3mm (1/8in) thickness and use a 9cm (3½in) cutter to cut 12 rounds. Use to line the base of a 12-hole mini muffin tin and prick with a fork. Line with baking parchment and baking beans and bake blind for 10-12 minutes or until the pastry begins to brown. Allow to cool, then fill each one with a little lemon curd – not too much or it will bubble out while cooking. In a large bowl, whisk the egg white until it is stiff enough to form soft peaks and hold its shape. Add the sugar gradually, until the mixture is glossy. Pipe each tart with the meringue mixture. Place on the top shelf of the oven and bake for 7-8 minutes or until the meringue is beginning to brown. Cool for a few minutes and remove from the tin.Tip: Using read-made pastry makes this

quick, but you can make it. Sift 115g (4oz) plain flour and a pinch of salt in a bowl. Cut 75g (2¾oz) butter into small pieces. Rub into the flour to form fine breadcrumbs and stir in 2-3tbsps cold water to form a dough. Knead on a lightly floured surface for 1 minute.Wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.

Savour Salt– the seasoning of the senses -

Salt defines us as a species - so says a report published in this week’s Telegraph. We are hard wired not just to want salt, but to need it, to adore it, to view it with something akin to lust. Just as we developed cattle and crops to advance from caves and savannas to villages and cities, salt is entwined with our evolution. Salt’s diversity is a crystalline reflection of the world’s geography, culture, and technology. Virtually every society in human history that could make salt, did. It is essential as a seasoning, a preservative and a nutrient. Those without the resources or skill to make salt needed to trade for it.

And it might not be that bad for us, after all. A new major study of 3,681 people published last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association has again seriously undermined the prevailing attitude among media and public health officials. It found no correlation between moderate salt intake and hypertension.

As the most potent flavour enhancer, salt is also among the weirdest and most unpredictable of all the world’s foods. Salt can be blue, green, grey, silver, white, rose, red, orange or purple. It can be monolithic or fractured. Salt crystals come in huge blocks and in microscopic fronds. Shapes range from pyramids to flakes to clumps to cubes; in the instance of a rare African salt from Lake Assal called Djibouti Boule, they even form naturally into near-perfect spheres the size of golf balls. Salt crystallisation seems intent on going rogue, bent on disproving the laws of physics and human expectations.

Salting, the simple act of adding salt to food, is so ancient, varied and essential that we have been lulled into believing we know how to do it, but most often, we don’t. Salting is an opportunity. What do you want salt to do for your dish? Do you want the salt to spark and vanish or persist and penetrate? Do you want to build a crescendo or diminuendo of flavour? What textures do you want: a quick snap, a voluptuous crackle, a barely perceptible crunch? How prominent a role do you want to allot to it: do you wish to hear only the voices of the other ingredients, or can salt chime

in as a chorus, or even grab the microphone for a verse?

Finishing with salt rather than salting your food during cooking is one of the most effective ways we have of playing sensually with what we eat. It brings food, salt and your palate into the most intimate possible contact. When salt is allowed to play a finishing role in the dish, the relationship of salt and food evolves with every bite. As you eat, food and salt combine – first a flash of salt ... then the food ... a flicker of salt ... now fuller food flavours ... then a faint spark of salt catching at the complex afterglow of the food. The rewards: increased intensity and complexity of flavour, surprising textures, unexpected aromas and a heightened awareness of the process of tasting food.

Salt awakens us to our senses and our instincts like no other edible substance. It also connects us to our environment and our traditions. Appreciating salt and using it well begins with a glimpse at the cultural and economic centrality of this essential mineral:

• Salt is the most important ingredient in cooking and the most powerful tool for improving the flavour of food.

• No two salts are the same, any more than any two people, or cultures, or geographies are the same.

• Some things do not belong in our food supply. Industrial salts like cheap sea salt, kosher salt and table salt are products that few people want in their kitchens once they understand and face up to how these products are made.

• There is no equating industrial salt with artisan salt. Artisan salts are food. Industrial salts are chemicals.

• Buying good salt can change the world by supporting traditional economies that preserve ecologically and culturally valuable resources.

Bring honour to your food. Buy a salt you can respect. Then, respect your salt.

the pound rose against the euro after european central bank President Jean-claude trichet, signaled interest-rate increases may be later than expected, narrowing the yield advantage over sterling assets. sterling recovered from a 13-month low reached earlier yesterday against the european currency, climbing the most in four months. ecb policy makers will monitor inflation risks “very closely, ”trichet said yesterday at a press conference in helsinki, wording interpreted by the market as indicating the bank may wait until after June to lift borrowing costs. the ecb left its benchmark interest rate at 1.25 percent yesterday, while the bank of england kept its key rate at a record low 0.5 percent yesterday.

a lot of people were looking for that ‘strong vigilance’ phrase from trichet and as soon as it was omitted they began pricing out the risk of ecb rate hikes at the next meeting, that’s caused the euro to suffer against the pound. britain’s currency appreciated as much as 1.2 percent to 88.85 pence per euro, as of 4:52 p.m. in london yesterday, the steepest advance since Jan. 7. sterling had earlier fallen to as low as 90.43 pence to the euro, the weakest since March 22,

MONTH LOW2010.

U.k. monetary policy makers led by Governor Mervyn king left their main lending rate unchanged as worsening economic data reduced the need for higher borrowing costs to curb inflation, which has soared to more than twice the central bank’s 2 percent target. Still, inflation unexpectedly eased to 4 percent in March, following five months of acceleration to a more than two-year high of 4.4 percent in February. it also maintained its bond-purchase program at 200 billion pounds. King defeated calls last month from three policy makers to tighten policy to tame inflation that’s twice the central bank’s 2 percent target.

Chris runs a expat blog about life in Spain (www.almerimarlife.com) and is a regular contributor to a number of publications and radio stations in Spain, as well as writing a monthly column for the Telegraph Expat site and is a Telegraph Expat guest blogger. He lives in

Almerimar with his wife Sands, four cats, two Harley’s and more often than not a glass of red.His column in the Sol Times is sponsored by Central Contracts (www.centralcontracts.com) a leading car leasing company supplying cars

and vans to business users and private individuals.

Only the other weekend here in Almerimar, and no doubt in many places along the Costa Almería, we witnessed one of the few remaining things that the British do really well. Years of tradition have gone into perfecting such an outcome. It isn’t something that you can just turn up and achieve: you need to practice, to learn from previous generations. Timing is everything. Peak too early and it can only end in disaster.

Other nations try of course, and some come close, but none have the degree of passion required, the ‘never say no’ attitude, the ability to succeed where all else fail.

I refer of course to the Great British hangover, the

collective ‘morning after’ which says all that needs to be said about the night before: the masonic style ‘wry smile’ which says “I was there”, the two hours spent pushing a congealing fried egg around the plate in a zombie like state, the clandestine passing of the ‘little white pill’ which promises light at the end of the tunnel and of course...the hair of the dog.

I am sure that up and down the Costa Almería you had your own version, but here in Almerimar we excelled. If only it were an Olympic Sport we would bring home the Gold without doubt!

And the reason for this state of affairs? The Royal Wedding! To be more precise the celebration of the Royal Wedding at the Cafe Bar

Ankara: the champagne breakfast, the quiz, raffle and prizes. The buffet fit for a King and to top it all, resplendent in Top Hat ‘Groovy Phil’ belting out the old singalong classics. The Spanish didn’t have a clue!

As for the Royal Wedding itself, what a perfect backdrop to a perfect day. Say what you like about the Royals (and I am not a fan at all) when it comes to putting the ‘Great’ into Britain they can’t be beaten. What an absolutely brilliant way to showcase London and it’s monuments, and the great British Spirit, and to entice tourists to visit.

And the scene for my morning after the night before? The CK Lounge, and I was far from alone. One of

the quietest breakfasts ever BUT you don’t always need words do you? Sometime all you need is a raised eyebrow before turning back to your bacon buttie to know that you are not alone in your suffering, and that there is always someone worse off than you!

So, congratulations and good luck in the future to the newlyweds, you seemed to have a good day, but not as good a day I reckon as the hundreds who celebrated because of your wedding.

And talking of the Cafe Bar Ankara it would be remiss of me not to say a belated happy birthday to Micala “Micky” Winslow, the true inspiration of so many of my hangovers over the years! Talking of hangovers I never thought I would live to see the day that Ray from the Cafe Bar Ankara ordered a coffee at 4pm in the afternoon in The Stumble Inn.

ROllER-SkATER CAuGHT On SPEED CAmERA....A man caught on a speed camera doing

40mph in a 30mph zone has escaped prosecution - because he was on roller-skates.

Sam Tuffnell, 28, was pictured setting off a camera in his home town of Hastings, East Sussex, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The stunt was filmed by a friend, who posted the footage to YouTube, where it has been viewed nearly 40,000 times.

Mr Tuffnell said: “We had always talked about whether it was possible to be caught speeding on blades, but we have only just got around to doing it.

“We chose the camera we did because it was at the bottom of a hill so I could build some speed up.

“Everyone loves the video. Some people think it is brilliant but some people think I am mad.

“I found out I had broken my coccyx a few days before and the rollerblades also had no brakes - but I was trying to go even faster than 50mph. Like everyone, we do have a bit of a grudge against speed cameras, but this was not some kind of protest, it was just a stunt.”

A spokesman for Sussex Safer Roads Partnership confirmed Mr Tuffnell would not face any punishment as he was not in a vehicle.

These last few weeks´ guide lines should come in perfect for helping you jump into the fray of the current local elections. Believe me, if you don’t get involved now, you run the risk of losing out morally, ethically, and financially what is going to happen in your immediate area.

If you’ve come to these shores and bought a home, apartment or made an investment or even eat in the restaurants you are no longer a foreigner but part of the community!

Better wake up the person in the mirror who watches over you to alert him to these new circumstances—no matter how foolishly you read them. No other country in all of Europe looks better after those that are the most involved with local politics. And if you’re viewed, deemed, not concerned enough to get directly involved in the running of the local town affairs—you will soon find the town forming laws, restrictions and fencing you OUT.

The standard phrase that I often use, is that you “must speak Spanish well enough to defend yourself”—or lose. You will soon find that the laws here are created for those most involved, obsessively motivated, or those that just cherish power.

Now, these folk approach you in various disguises, your friendly panadero (baker), the back slapping hugging politician or just the guy in the pub, who is there always asking questions about everything and also seems to know the answers to everything that is taking place.

Hell, I know some English folk that considered themselves too far above the local Spaniard’s level to bother talking with them, or even saying the obligatory “Buenos dias.” They recently discovered that the new fast track AVE is coming through their house. It was purposefully rerouted there as someone with pull, “enchufe” (connections) didn’t want it disturbing his radishes and he went to all the meetings, lodged all the proper papers and had the damn train direction redrawn to pass through the domain of his lofty and arrogant foreign neighbors. Oh, they screamed outrage, went into catalytic fits and rolled on the ground like undisciplined five year olds at the injustice of it all—yet, from the Spanish side, it was all achieved legally and irreversible.

The haughty and supercilious foreigners now speak in a stutter mimicking the movie The King´s Speech. Bbbbbut I never knew. Bbbbbut no one ever warned me.

Consider yourself “told”.

BLIND gIRL, 10, WORKS AS INTERpRETER...............A blind schoolgirl who

is fluent in four languages has become the youngest interpreter to work at the European Parliament - at the age of ten.

Alexia Sloane, from Cambridge, lost her sight when she was two-years-old after she was diagnosed with a brain tumour whilst on holiday in France.

But despite her disability the little girl has excelled at languages and at the age of 10 she is already

fluent in English, French, Spanish and Mandarin - and is learning German.

Now she has fulfilled her dream of working as an interpreter after East of England MEP Robert Sturdy invited her to the European Parliament in Brussels.

“There is usually a minimum age requirement of 14 just to enter the European Parliament so for Alexia to interpret there at the age of 10 was amazing,” said mum

Isabelle.

Alexia has been tri-lingual since birth as her mum is half French and half Spanish and her dad Richard is English.

“She has always been very good at languages and shown an interest from a very young age,” added Isabelle, who also has a four-year-old daughter Melissa.

Alexia has dreamed of becoming an interpreter since she was six and chose to go to the

European Parliament as her prize when she won the Young Achiever Community Award of the Year.

She asked if she could shadow interpreters and MEP Robert Sturdy agreed to take her along as his guest.

“It was fantastic and I’m absolutely determined now to become an interpreter,” said Alexia. “Nothing can stop me.”

At Porsche, black is back with the new Cayman S Black Edition. On sale this September, the production run of the mid-engined coupe will be limited to just 500 cars worldwide, each boasting a 3.4-litre flat-six engine, distinctive black colour scheme and luxuriously dark interior.

This latest addition to the Cayman family offers a bit more bite. Though mechanical changes are limited, maximum power is now delivered at 7,400rpm - up 200rpm - and acceleration is improved, shaving one-tenth off the 0-62 mph sprint time.

Top speed is also up, and this model is just one mph faster than the Cayman S.

However, this increase in power doesn’t jeopardise economy and consumption remains the same as in the standard car. Optional PDK, Porsche’s hybrid twin-clutch gearbox, is also available, further boosting acceleration.

The car’s dramatic black paintwork is further enhanced by new 19” black lightweight alloy wheels, courtesy of the Boxster Spyder, which are a full inch bigger than standard wheels.

Inside, the colour scheme is consistent with the car’s black nature. The two seats are trimmed in black partial leather, matching the dashboard, gear lever and instrument cluster dials. And for

those who might forget what Cayman they’re travelling in, stainless steel door entry guards featuring “Black Edition” lettering and a glove compartment lid, bearing a special edition badge should be enough to remind them!

As standard, this edition features Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights and LED daytime running lights, together with automatic anti-dazzle interior and exterior mirrors with integrated rain sensor.

The Cayman S Black Edition is on sale in the UK from September 2011, priced from £50,420 including, a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

JAG’S JET CAR iS GO!It’s the green light for the most exciting Jaguar

in decades. The Coventry firm has announced that the stunning C-X75 supercar will go into production – and it has partnered up with Formula One team Williams to do it!

First revealed at last year’s Paris Motor Show to celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary, the C-X75 stole the limelight with its swooping shape and innovative range-extending gas turbine powerplant. However, while a handful of the 250-limited run will boast the incredible turbine system, the rest will feature an all-new 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine hybrid unit developed by partners Williams. This unit will be related to the engine used by the Williams F1 team from 2013.

“This association with Jaguar Land Rover provides us with an incredible opportunity to work with one of the world’s most inconic brands,” Williams F1 boss, Sir Frank Williams said. “Williams has always considered itself an engineering company so this project will allow us to create something

truly exceptonal.”Complete with electric motors driving each

axle and a engine rev limit of 10,000rpm, Project C-X75 will boast incredible performance. There’s no definite power output as yet but with each electric motor boasting around 400bhp, expect the total output to be in excess of 900bhp.

With a lightweight carbonfibre chassis and ceramic brakes, Jaguar claims the supercar will do 0-60mph in less than three seconds and 0-100mph in less than six seconds with a top speed in excess of 200mph.

That makes it the fastest accelerating Jaguar in history by some margin.

Jaguar claims that the car can emit just 70g/km of CO2 in certain modes. It will have a zero emission mode where it runs solely on electric power, for 30 miles. Track mode will unleash full power. Jaguar says the C-X75’s engine will act as a range extender, boosting the on-board lithium-ion batteries, which then power the motors. The car will be able to be plugged into the mains too.

Spanish friends of Andreas, a tackle shop owner in Garrucha Marina, caught a 70 kilo blue fin tuna 10km out and they have also been catching sail fish over the past couple of weeks. I didn’t know there were many sail fish if any in the Med.

‘Pugwash Pete’ got out once only this week on his boat with his son Joe who was out on holiday. A poor day was had with one comber being the catch of the day; at least it was a big one.

‘Cuba Brian’, like Pete managed only one day out, him and mates caught a few different varieties but only one fish of note, a 4lb red snapper.

See photo of Brian’s partner ‘Admiral Phil’

with a pandora he caught.‘Quote’“The season for an ancient and

spectacular tuna-fishing technique has begun off Spain’s southwest coast, and fishermen fear it could soon disappear if fleets of factory ships elsewhere keep overfishing prized Atlantic bluefin tuna.

In the method the Spanish called “almadraba,” fishermen stretch maze-like nets from sandy beaches to catch the bluefin, a practice that dates from when Phoenician traders sailed to these shores 1,000 years before the birth of Christ.

This laborious harvest, which includes lifting nets heaving with fish onto ships, is timed to coincide

with annual migrations by tuna from the Atlantic to lay eggs in warm Mediterranean waters”.

Someone wasn’t in the queue when brains were dished out otherwise they might have worked out if they waited until after the fish had spawned and were on their way back out of the Med it would be a better idea, DURRR.

The Albox fishing club held a beach match between six members opposite the Repsol garage at the Mojacar side of Garrucha. Willy ‘Jonah’ Jones won the weights. 6 anglers and 12 rods caught a 1lb 2oz dorada bream, 2 dreaded weavers, 3 small sea bass and a rockfish of some kind, a comber maybe.

(The painted variety being the norm off the beach)

‘London Bill’ last week continued spinning off the rocks at the north end of Macenas Beach and caught a few small sea bass. Mojacar’s ‘Markie Mark’ tell’s me he’s been catching the odd one from the same spot.

A 7lb mullet that was caught from the river in Murcia. There are 12lbers in Garrucha marina. Not only are you not allowed to fish for them, for they wouldn’t be hard to catch, but you wouldn’t want to eat one eh?

‘Baza Barry’ fished Lake Negratin where he says the water is high and still very cold. Not a lot was caught other than a few sluggish carp, not quite awake yet.

‘Girl Friday’ is going to get the next batch of Andalucian beach and boat fishing licenses in about a week so see me soon if you want one. Bring NIE and passport copies with you, one copy for each license required and I’ll help fill in the forms.

Next Meeting of the Albox Fishing Club is Wednesday 25th May at The Azafran Bar at 4pm.

There will be a fishing meeting in the Beachcomber on 10th May; 7pm til 9pm where like minded people meet for a chat about fishing!

For further information on any of the above or to find out about beach, boat or coarse fishing licenses, see me at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099.

Ladies Pairs ChampionshipDisappointingly there were only 10 ladies pairs entered the

competition, Margaret Maltby & Sandra Kyle won through to the final when Margaret at game point down played a perfect running shot into the head with the very last bowl of the match against Trish Seymour & Linda Lester.

Barbara Ruscoe & Mo De-Boer won through to the final defeating Margaret Swaby & Dorothy Simkin.

In the final Margaret once again was playing at the top of her game and never allowed Barbara & Mo anymore than one or two shots throughout, Margaret & Sandra winning the pairs championship after 17 ends by a score of 21-12.

almerimar friDay Golf...– 6 May 2011Following a week off due

to bad weather we were back to normal this week. We played the back 9 on the Master course plus the Classic as the greens were being hollow tined on the front 9 of the Master course.

We had 31 players taking part this week. It was sunny with a strong breeze.

This week we played a Yellow Ball competition. It was teams of four with 2 stableford scores to count on each hole. However

players took it in turns to have their stableford score doubled on a hole when they were playing the yellow ball . In addition there were 2 hidden holes where an extra stableford score counted.

The winners were Marianne Liljedahl, John Fielding, Douglas Kemp and Jan with a team score of 122 points. Last place and chocolates went to the team of Peter Cooke, John Andrew, Nina Taylor and Mary Burrough with a score of 104.

Nearest the pin was on hole 6 (Classic 1) and it was

won by john Woodhead with a distance of 3.80m.

FRIDAY 6 MARCH - RESULTS15 members and 1 guest had

an early start with the first tee being at the unearthly hour of 8.09a.m. Yes it was light at that time!

Luckily the weather was kind to us at that time of the morning and it remained sunny all day although the wind picked up during the round. The course is still in excellent condition with the fairways looking green and lush.

The early start obviously suited some of our members as the results will show:

There were 2 x 2’s: Paul Henshaw on hole 6 and George Manus on hole 14.

Division One: 1st – George Manus – 39 points; 2nd – Geoff Bridgman – 34 points

Division Two: 1st – Bob Risbey – 36 points; 2nd – Chris Risbey – 24 points - Well done everyone!

Greetings from God’s little waiting room, where this week a quiet hush descended over this hallowed land, the majority of the noisy ones having gone on the trip to Valencia. Games of football can, for the moment, be enjoyed without the “surround sound” of Looselips and co. My “Truffle hound” went, undercover, on this trip, to glean any snippets of gossip that may occur, which, of course I will impart to you later on. It’s an impossibility for that number to go on a trip and for nothing murky rise to the surface. I received a phone call that evening , from Grommet. Scandal so soon after leaving, that would be unusual, even with our crowd. I need not have worried, he only wanted to know how his beloved Southampton had got on, fortunately they had won, so his trip took on a new high, and the Spanish, in that resteraunt certainly knew it.

As yet there has been no sightings of Little Ken’s fishing rod being seen, on the Argos lake, this is starting to take on a mystery akin to the Loch Ness Monster!!! Cuddly Keith has arrived with the usual threats of what he’s going to do to the carp in Lake Argos. He told me he has a new secret weapon, where have I heard this before. It’s no good talking about it, you’ve got to produce some fish to prove it!!!

The other Thursday evening, I had some enjoyable games of dominoes with “The Forgotten Ones”. These Gentlemen dutifully drive their wives to the line dancing session at the watering hole, then they have to sit all evening at their beck and call, until called upon to replenish their wives glass or supply them with food. What a tedious existence, so to while

away three arduous hours they play dominoes and drink. That’s not a life, but they bear it with great fortitude and stoic good humor. I for one admire their resilience!!!

Sitting with the matriarch, last Wednesday, watching the football with Squirrel Nutkins and Chewbacker, she came out with this comment, “As long as the other side keep playing with themselves, we’ll be alright”!!!. I was not aware until that moment, that she had such a deep understanding of the game!!! It was her Birthday on Sunday, and she applied to Turre Town Council to have the appropriate number of candles on the cake. The application was turned down because it posed a fire risk. They allowed only the one candle, and so the coven was convened to huddle around this solitary flame. Happy Birthday Joyce.

With the extreme sports night coming to a close, for the summer months, it is hard to think of how we are now going to get rid of all that pent up energy. No doubt with the arrival of the kids and Grand Children, for the summer hols will soon solve that little problem.

Well there back from Valencia, they had a wonderful time in a beautiful city. Spoke to the “Truffle Hound” and he told me nothing untoward happened, no real point in going then. Will have to delve deeper.

That’s all for this week. Until the next time. Tight lines. Uncle Albert

Golf Great seve Ballesteros Dies at 54

The 54-year-old passed away surrounded by his family at his home in Pedrena, northern Spain, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Ballesteros was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008 after losing consciousness at Madrid Airport.

The five-time major winner had four operations to remove the tumour as well as undergoing chemotherapy.

The funeral will take place on Wednesday at the San Pedro parish church in his home village of Pedrena, near Santander.

In a statement, the Ballesteros family expressed gratitude for the “support and gestures of love” they had received and asked for “respect and privacy at such a painful time”.

Ballesteros, who claimed 87 titles over his career, won the Open in 1979, 1984 and 1988 and became the first European to win the Augusta Masters in 1980, repeating the feat in 1983.

He also enjoyed a successful Ryder Cup career as both player and captain - playing in eight Ryder Cups and winning 20 points from 37 matches

before guiding Europe to victory over the United States at Valderrama in 1997.

But it was his daring and flamboyant style that made Ballesteros special, transforming the image of golf and bringing a whole new audience to the sport.

The BBC’s golf correspondent Iain Carter said: “No golfer did more to popularise the game in Europe than Seve Ballesteros. He played a fearless, exciting and charismatic brand of the game. It thrilled sport fans all over the world.”

Ballesteros’ fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia added: “He was

a game-changer. To come from where he did and do what he did was amazing.”

Colin Montgomerie, the winner of eight European Tour Order of Merit titles, said: “Very few people are called legends in this world and Seve was one of them.

“We’ve lost one of the great icons of the sport, but may we also celebrate Seve’s life. I think it’s only right at this time - what a character and what a passionate man he was.

“It was an honour to play under him as our captain in the Ryder Cup and an honour to play with him.”

A record field of 70 players entered the Forum Golf Society PLAS - TECH Challenge at Aguilon on May 5th, and were rewarded with a superb day´s golf on a course set up off the tough back tees that played hard but fair. For many the golf was an added bonus, as our sponsors Plas - Tech not only subsidised every players green fees by 50% but also provided free t-shirts, over €2500 worth of prizes, bacon rolls before everybody started, as well as paying for an excellent barbecue afterwards. Special thanks also to J J Serrano & his hard-working staff at Aguilon for not only donating a very generous prize but also providing free beer !

With over 35 prizes on offer the overall list of winners is more than comprehensive, and can be found in detail on www.forumgolfsociety.webs.com, but the principal winners on the day were as follows
