Temple Beth O’r/Beth Torah
ADAR I / ADAR II 5774 MARCH 2014
SOL SERN MEMORIAL PROGRAM
METROPOLITAN KLEZMER in concert
SUNDAY, MARCH 30, 2014 AT 4:00 PM
METROPOLITAN KLEZMER , established in 1994, brings eclectic exuberance to Yiddish musical
genres from all over the map. Performing vibrant versions of lesser-known gems from wedding dance,
trance, folk, swing and tango styles, they re-invent tradition with both irreverence and respect… an
exhilarating journey!
The program is co-sponsored by a HEART Grant from the Union County Freeholders and
by the TBO/BT Sol Sern Memorial Fund.
Free & open to the public.
Refreshments will be offered.
“EXCELLENT KLEZMER…IMPECCABLE YET ELECTRIFYING
arrangements … Delightfully rambunctious…”
Richard Gehr, Village Voice

From the Cantor
It was a wonderful experience
spending time in Israel in
February as part of a clergy
mission sponsored by the
Jewish Federation of Greater
MetroWest, the World Zionist
Organization and the Israeli
Foreign Ministry. We had an
opportunity to meet with
representatives of various
branches of the Israeli government, including members
of the Knesset, the Supreme Court, and advisors to the
Prime Minister. The subjects discussed in the meetings
covered Israel-Diaspora relations, reclaiming Zionism in
our day, and matters relating to religious pluralism. In
the security area, we were briefed on the BDS
movement, Iran, and the current talks with the
Palestinians.
We also had an opportunity to see first-hand the work of
our Federation. We traveled to Kibbutz Erez near the
border with Gaza to see the bomb shelters our
community’s funds helped to refurbish, and the library
we helped build. We met with religious leaders of the
Ethiopian community we help support and to hear their
concerns and the challenges of integrating into Israeli
society. We visited a program that prepares Modern
Orthodox girls in the year prior to their joining Tzahal,
the Israeli Defense Forces. All of these are most
worthwhile projects, and it was gratifying to see the
results of the MertoWest community’s efforts on behalf
of Israeli society.
The Conservative clergy on the mission had the
opportunity to meet with the leaders of the Schechter
Institute and with representatives of the Masorti
movement. Of special note was our meeting with
Masorti Rabbi Reuven Stamov and his wife Lena who
were just about to return to Kiev. We pray for their
safety and for the well-being of the entire Jewish
community in the Ukraine.
But aside from all of the meetings and travel, this trip
was for me in large measure about reconnecting with the
land and its people. It has been a good number of years
since my last trip. Much has changed -- Israel is today a
much more modern and developed nation. The skyline
of Tel Aviv reflects the growth and strength of its
economy. There is an impressive new light rail that
connects the different neighborhoods of Jerusalem.
There is a diversity of the population reflecting
immigration from the four corners of the earth,
somehow all melded into one society, which yes, has
its dificulties and unsolved problems, but that is in a
very clear way a most vibrant society.
Most important, these are our brothers and sisters, and
it so behooves us to support them in every way we can
--just as they support us. A common theme of our
meetings and one emphasized by Natan Sharansky in
the time we shared with him was this sense of
partnership that needs to evolve. Israelis no longer see
themselves as merely the beneficiaries of our largesse.
They are rather our partners in dealing with all of the
issues we face as Jews. For example, as was pointed
out to us by government officials, it is Israel that has
taken the lead in confronting those in Europe who
seek to ban circumcision and shechita on the
continent.
There were many memorable moments during my trip.
What stands out as most special? Was it the trip up to
Mount Herzl and the new, creative exhibit on the
history of Zionism? Was it the meeting with young
people trying to bring renewal and diversity to the
neighborhoods of Jerusalem? Or was it the Friday
evening I spent at the Kotel with Israeli soldiers, and
the invitation from an incredible individual to have
Shabbat dinner at his magnificent home in the old
Jewish Quarter. There were many magical moments,
and over time I hope to share them with you. For
now, I am happy to be back in Clark with my TBOBT
community. But a part of me will surely remain in
the Holy Land of our ancestors….
B’Shalom,
Cantor Steven Stern

You may have noticed the display case
has been empty. That is because one of
the glass panels broke in late January
and the case cannot be secured without all four panels.
It should be fixed sometime in mid-February.
We have just received two copies of “Welcome to the
World: A Jewish Baby’s Record Book.” They are $25
each. Watch for them in the display case.
If you want something you don’t see, chances are we
have it! Call or email Nancy Kelner – 908-272-9072
SISTERHOOD PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Although we've had a very snowy
winter, Sisterhood has not slowed
down. March is always a busy
month with Purim. On Wednesday,
March 12th at 7:30pm we will be
putting together shalach manos
baskets at the temple. We can
always use some extra people. It
only takes an hour or so of your time. Meanwhile, get your
orders mailed to Helene Davis by March 7th.
Then on Wednesday, March 19th at 7pm, we are continuing
with crochet lessons at Audrey Silverman's home. Whether
you are a true beginner or a veteran, come for a good cause
and for fun. It is best to bring a G Hook and soft acrylic
yarn. We hope to make enough baby caps to send to local
hospitals.
Finally, on Sunday, March 30th is Women's League Spring
Conference at Congregation Ahavat Olam in Howell from
8:30am to 3pm. Again, Sisterhood will subsidize those
who attend at half the cost. So the whole day will set you
back just $15. If you are interested in going please call me
by March 15th. We will carpool to Howell. You will be
back to Clark in time for the Sol Sern Program with the
Metropolitan Klezmer at 4pm.
Well, Spring arrives later this month, so I expect to see
many of you at these programs!
Chag Purim!!

School Days The joint Yaldeinu and Hebrew Class meeting had a wonderful celebration for Tu B'Shevat. The morning began with a
very interactive Seder with the text exploring the celebration of the holiday, some thought provoking questions for
discussion, as well as the meaning of the special foods at the Seder and why we eat them. All this was led by teacher
Michelle Pincus.
Following the Seder, Dr. Mike Miller, our Temple Resident Scientist, along with aide Harvin Freedman, came well
prepared to engage the children in creating two compost projects, one with potential biodegradable products and one with
potentially non-biodegradable products. Each group consisted of a pair of siblings. Towards the later part of the class
the parents joined the group and enjoyed watching the enthusiasm of everyone present. They helped their children exit
with their projects to take home to observe their compost experiment and they will report back with their findings.
On Sunday, February 2nd, our students again joined the Men's Club for the World Wide Wrap. Dr. Mike planned for the
students to have their own tefillin and participate in the experience with the men of our congregation, with Michael
Goldstein leading the explanation.
We both would like to thank the Men's Club and particularly Dr. Mike for their interest and time and effort to include our
students and parents in their activities, from the participation of the parents in raising the Sukkah as well as dismantling
it, and having a class in the Sukkah early in the year, to our late January and early February activities. It is so good to see
different arms of the Temple with the students in intergenerational times together.
We also thank the Cantor for his continual time and effort.

March 2014 is upon us and that means Purim and Pesach are not
far off. Also, spring will blossom soon and hopefully, all the
snow we have had this winter will melt and fill our fresh water
reservoirs. Can summer be far behind? Let’s not be in such a
rush. I still remember a snow storm on March 20, 1967, the day I
took my driving test with seven inches of snow on the test
course. Yes, I passed. And how about the April 1 snow storm
that dumped a foot of snow? We will see what spring will have
for us.
On Sunday, February 2, 2014, our annual WORLD WIDE
WRAP program had 15 participants. We were a small but
enthusiastic group. Watch the Men’ Club bulletin board for
pictures. Our children participated by learning about tefillin
TBO-BT Men’s Club SHOMREI HA’ARETZ/ STEWARDS OF THE LAND
G-d told Adam in the Garden of Eden to guard the world he was being given. “If you destroy this world ,” he was told,
“there is no one to come and set it right after you.” (Kohelet Rabbah 7:28) This mitzvah should be the call that TBO-BT
cannot ignore.
The environment is the world we live in, the city and the countryside; the air we breathe indoors and outdoors; and human
beings, alongside other animals. In Hebrew, the word for ”human” (adam) comes from the word for ”earth” (adamah). As
human population increases and technology becomes more pervasive, our impact on the natural world has
increased. Conservation and efficiency are two of the least expensive and simplest sources of energy. Conservation means
using less energy--driving less, turning off lights and equipment not in use, lowering the heat two and raising the air
conditioning two degrees. Efficiency is using less energy to do what you are currently doing, a car that uses less gas going
the same distance, or a light bulb that uses less electricity and lasts longer.
Recycle paper, cardboard, glass and plastic bottles and aluminum. Purchase products made from at least 40% post-consumer
recyclables. Purim is coming. For Mishloach Manot use wrapping paper and containers made form recyclables. Sending
organic food reduces the contamination of the land and water.
