Sokol Detroit Unit Meeting Minutes

April 4, 2017

First Vice President, Sr. Carol Brandon, called the meeting to order at 7:00PM. Fifteen

members were in attendance. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. There was a mo-

ment of silence for long-time Sokol Detroit member, Sr. Marie Gabriel, and for the father

of Sr. Meg Novacek.

Correspondence: Newsletters were received from Sokol Greater Cleveland, Sokol St.

Louis, Sokol Spirit, and Sokol Sydney. Also received was a request from Sr. Lillian Roter,

President, American Sokol of Los Angeles, who is requesting a donation for the new Na-

tional Czech & Slovak Museum Library exhibition entitled, Twists and Turns: The Story of

Sokol. Sokol Los Angeles members have pledged a donation and are asking all other

Sokol groups nationally to support this project. The donation form will be posted on the

Sokol Detroit bulletin board.

Applications for Membership: Sr. Melanie Mily, the 2017 Membership/Interviewing Chair-

man, reported on the interview with Eriq and Alejandra Frommert, who were sponsored

by Br. Alex Novacek, and recommended them for membership. There were no objec-

tions from the unit, and the Frommerts will be initiated at the May 2017 unit meeting.

Treasurer: Sr. Ann Marie Hurych reported on the March 31, 2017, account balances.

BOI: Sr. Lynn Conrad reported. The Northeastern District competition is scheduled for

May 13; a camp was held February 20-24; a camp is currently held at the Center April 3-

Fitness Challenge; and the youth membership totals will be sent to ASO. Sr. Conrad is

preparing registration/waiver packets for the adult participants who will attend the Na-

tional Slet in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, June 22-25. She will collect these packets and mail be-

fore the Slet due date. Since good nutrition, eating healthy, is taught to Sokol gymnasts,

Sr. Sharon Stanek reported on the aeroponic growing system, Tower Garden, which is

now in the gymnasium, Greens, herbs, and other vegetables are growing and will be

available for the gymnasts.

advertisement in the National Slet booklet. Br. Novacek asked for approval of the two

new membership forms: the new Membership Application and the Membership Upgrade

the new members, their dates of initiation, and will send reminders to turn in their Mem-

bership Upgrade form one month before the one-year anniversary of their Sokol initiation.
