Jan SwasthyaSahyog (JSS) Jan SwasthyaSahyog (JSS) is a voluntary, non-profit, registered society of health professionals running a low-cost, effective, health program providing both preventive and curative services for the past 15 years to people from the tribal and rural areas of Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh through a community health program and a rural health centre, which includes a hospital.

The health of people in rural India is in a precarious situation-High cost and inaccessibility of services. The high cost of this kind of health care, as well as the loss of wages during the period of illness pushes these people into a grim cycle of debt, bondage, and deepening poverty. Their work: Ganiyari Outpatient Clinic Since 2000, JSS has run a Referral Health Centre between the villages of Ganiyari and Beltukri in Takhatpur block. The centre houses an outpatient clinic with a low-cost pharmacy, diagnostic laboratory and X-ray and ultrasound facilities. We also have a Ward with 70 beds and 2 major and 1 minor Operation Theatres where high-quality surgical services have been provided till present date to more than 18,000 patients at a very low cost. The clinic has provided over 500,000 consultations at an extremely low cost to patients drawn from nearly 2000 villages of Bilaspur and other neighbouring districts. Rural Outreach Clinics Every week, we run three outreach clinics with a full team of doctors, laboratory and pharmacy staff in three different sub-centres located up to 60 km away from Ganiyari. Laboratory testing capabilities and medications available through the referral hospital. Village Health Program Since the organisation’s inception, JSS has also been running a Village Health Programme, which provides preventive and curative services with the help of 110 village health workers (VHWs) in 54 tribal and forest-related villages of Kota and Lormi blocks of Bilaspur district. Selected by their respective villages, the VHWs are regularly trained at JSS in preventative and curative services for conditions including diarrhea, upper respiratory tract and ear infections, pneumonia, skin infections, and malaria. In addition, VHWs are involved in community-based initiatives targeting undernutrition, malaria, and tuberculosis. They serve as key actors in the surveillance and control of such diseases. Other Activities

Phulwari: Rural creches; Development of low-cost medical technology, technical training and resource activities; field,

laboratory, and clinic based investigations into tuberculosis, malaria, childhood pneumonia, and diarrhoea; and

Promotion of organic and sustainable methods of agriculture. Through our innovative clinical care model, research, and advocacy work, we hope to show that low-cost, high quality community-based health care systems are possible even in the most resource-poor settings.

SWASTHYA SWARAJYA SwasthyaSwaraj Comprehensive Community Health Programme is active in 75 villages from 6 panchayats, Kerpai, Nakrundi, Kaniguma, Gunpur, Sindhipadar and Gopalpur in Thuamul Rampur block. This programme covers a population of about 14000 people. Thuamul Rampur block of Kalahandi district lies in the south western region of Odisha. Kalahandi is a beautiful land of unending mountain ranges, gushing rivers, lush green forests, mineral rich soil and simple people. We have planned a two pronged strategy for five years to attain our goals. 1. Provide health care services to the community

OPD services at two places (60 km apart): A team of doctors, nurses, paramedics and trained village youth run two 24 x 7 Out Patient centers. These centers provide primary health care of high quality; drugs and investigations free of cost or at affordable rates; laboratory and emergency facilities; and referrals.

Antenatal and under-five clinical camps: Tuberculosis (TB) clinics: Innovative, patient centered TB control programme in areas where there are

no telephone or mobile coverage; case detection is very poor and non-adherence to drugs is very high.

Medical Camps: Eye checkup camps and Leprosy detection camps are conducted to detect cases early.

Health Management Information System (HMIS 2.Empower the Community

Educate, empower, train and equip women, youth, children, adolescent girls, farmers and teachers with various skills to create an army of health empowered people. This will ultimately result in a movement of people for better health and free themselves from ill health and illiteracy. SwasthyaSathis :Majority of them are illiterate women. They are taught to clinically diagnose simple

sicknesses and perform simple laboratory tests. The SwasthyaSathis are able to give simple medications with doses adjusted according to age; monitoring growth of children; antenatal and postnatal care; health education etc… They also collect data from their villages on vital events – births, deaths and pregnancies.

ShikhyaSathis are educated (8th

class plus) young men who are selected by the project. 20 ShikhsyaSathis are trained as health communicators. They focus on the national control program for malaria, tuberculosis and leprosy. They implement various control program activities in the rural communities with community participation.

Children’s Club: Children’s club is a joyful concept designed for the children from 6 to 14 years. It is mainly focused on the children who had never been to school. Main aim of forming a children’s club is to give them basic education as well as to make them aware of their health.

TULSI Program: Adolescent girls are the most neglected and illiterate. This is a program for adolescent girls. It helps them to learn, bloom and develop through their teenage.

SwasthyaJathra: Mass health education programs in the villages following the tribal culture. These programs are organized in one or two locations as an annual mega event.
