Types
1. Alluvial Soils
-40 % of the total area of the country-Rich in potash poor in phosphorous-In Upper, Middle Ganga plain 2 types of soils . Khadar & Bhangar & both contains calcareous concretions (Kankars).-Colour light grey to ash grey. 2. Black Soil
-Covers Deccan Plateau Maharashtra, MP, Gujarat, Andhra P & parts of TN-Godavari , Krishna NW Deccan Plateau soil is v deep.-known as Regur Soil or Black Cotton Soil -swell & become sticky when wet and shrink when dried , So in dry season soils develop cracks-Colour deep black to grey.
3. Red and Yellow Soil:-develops on crystalline igneous rocks E, S Deccan PltRed Loamy Soil in piedmont zone of W Ghatsfound in Odisha and Chattisgarh & S mid Ganga plainReddish colour due to diffusion of iron in crystalline, metamorphic rocks. yellow when hydrated.fine-grained fertile , coarse-grained poorpoor in nitrogen, phosphorous, humus
