The basics of soil nail design methodsand construction practices will be presented andexamples used to highlight the link between thetwo.

An Overview of the Titan HollowBar System for Soil Nailing,Anchors, Micropiles and GroundImprovementBy Horst Aschenbroich, Dipl. Ing., Con-Tech Systems, Ltd.This presentation will explain the Titan Hollow BarSystem, its components and use, and the majorbenefits. It will cover the installation and testingprocedures, equipment used to achieve themaximum benefits, and structural and geotechnicaldesign relative to building codes and site specificgeotechnical reports. The Devils Slide LandslideStabilization in California will also be discussed.

Soil Nails at the Calgary WLRTProjectBy Scott MacCara P.Eng., Southwest Contracting Ltd.Southwest Contracting Ltd, in a JV with BelPacific,are installing 80 KM of hollow injected anchor barsinto “running” gravels within a shotcrete soil nailshoring system for the Calgary WLRT. The project isnow over 75% complete. A procedural review of thesystem along with advantages over current shoringsystems will be discussed. Some inventive uses ofthe hollow injected anchor bar for use as micropilesfor some Vancouver projects will also behighlighted.

Use of Drainage Nails forStabilization of a Small ScaleLandslide in a Residential SettingBy Matthew Kokan, M.A. Sc., P.Eng.,GeoPacific Consultants Ltd.In 2006, a residential subdivision was completed inthe eastern hillsides of Chilliwack, approximately 80km west of Vancouver, B.C. During gradingactivities on site, a large soil-based instability wasobserved on the site that impacted road and serviceconstruction. The main portion of the slide wasstabilized by re-grading of slopes and installing deepdrainage trenches and drilled horizontal drains tolower the ground water table. The toe of theinstability was cut off from the main part of theinstability by road works however it remainedmobile and was impacting three potentially saleable

lots. A combination of a gravity retaining wall andPlatypus anchors were used to provide drainage andsupport for the slope so that the adjacent lots couldbe developed.

Case Studies in Shallow LandslideRepair using Launched Soil Nailsand Launched Micropiles in NorthAmericaBy Colby Barrett, E.I.T., J.D., Soil Nail Launcher, Inc.; and Marty Willfong, P.Eng., Morsky Hyspeed SoilNailing Ltd.The speakers will outline the design methodologyand appropriate application of this new technologyof launched soil nails and micropiles. Case studiesinclude four examples from Canada: two reinforcedearth walls on launched micropiles in SK, a shorelineslope stabilization using rip-rap and launched soilnails near Moosonee ON, and a soil nail stabilizedslope in Craven, SK. US examples include alakeshore landslide stabilization using launched soilnails near Lake Tahoe, CA, a coastal bluffstabilization using fiberglass launched nails andgeologically sculpted shotcrete in Northern CA, androadway landslide stabilizations using launched soilnails and reinforced shotcrete, and pressure-groutedlaunched soil nails in NH.

Landslide StabilizationFundamentalsBy J. Erik Loehr, P.E., Ph.D., University of Missouri-ColumbiaA wide variety of deep foundation elements can beused for effective stabilization of landslides andslopes. This presentation will provide a summary ofmany of these techniques, including generaldiscussion of “how” and “where” each techniqueworks. The presentation will also include generaldiscussion of potential failure modes that should beconsidered and how these can be addressed indesign.

Design of Landslide StabilizingPiles by the Strength ReductionMethod (SRM), Kinematic Methodand Slope Stability Methods By Daniel Pradel, P.E., G.E., D.G.E., FASCE, Ph.D.Praad Geotechnical, Inc.Because of the large bending moments to whichlandslide stabilizing piles are subjected, drilled shaftsin slopes are generally reinforced with massive steelI-beams and/or reinforcement cages, and theirdesign often incorporates several rows of tiebacks.In the USA, a minimum static Factor of Safety of 1.5is generally required for slope stabilization. Theapplication of this Factor of Safety requirement is notas straight forward as it may appear, and oftendesigns by various consultants can differsignificantly for the same slope. To avoid this

problem stabilizing piles can be designed fromboth a geotechnical and structural perspective bythe strength reduction method using numericalprograms such as FLAC or PLAXIS. Additionally,numerical results will be compared to varioustraditional methodologies often used byconsultants.

Cornell University – FoundrySlope Stabilization ProjectBy Timothy Avery, P.E., Hayward Baker, Inc.One of the defining characteristics of the CornellUniversity campus in Ithaca, NY are the beautifulgorges. Although picturesque, they have alwayspresented a challenge for adjacent building worksand crossings. In the spring of 2010, a brokenwater main caused a slide that eroded a largeportion of the upper gorge wall 180-feet above FallCreek gorge within 10-feet of the Foundry FineArts Studio. The Foundry, one of the oldestbuildings remaining on Cornell’s campus and alocal city landmark, was evacuated. Forty-threejet grouted columns installed behind a micropiletangent wall were constructed to stabilize the slidearea and open the Foundry in time for fall classes.

Using Platepiles to StabilizeLandslides during InclementConditionsBy Richard Short, P.E., G.E., Slope Reinforcement Technology, Inc.The Platepile method of slope repair is being usedto stop and permanently repair a creepinglandslides while rain and sleet storms are inprogress. Four case studies are presented. Themethod involves installing steel reinforcingelements in a defined array through the slide massinto the underlying stable materials. Minimalearthwork was involved using only the onsite soils.The method was ideally suited for this site locatedin a remote region on the Rocky Mountains.

Tonawanda Creek Road SlopeStabilizationBy Timothy Avery, P.E., Hayward Baker, Inc.Tonawanda Creek, in the western part of New YorkState, flows through soft clay soils depositedduring the last glacial period. Erosion of the outerbanks of the meandering creek along withsaturation of the upper silty soils during rainevents led to many slope failures over the years. InJune of 2004, a 250 foot long section ofTonawanda Creek Road dropped about 10 feet as alarge section of the bank pushed out into thecreek, closing the road. Dry soil mixing was usedto create insitu cemented columns in anoverlapping panel pattern to stabilize the soilsbeneath the road and between the road and thecreek.
