SOUNDING MACHINES We use three complementary kinds of sounding machines regarding the nature of soil : - three core drilling machines Atlas Copco Craelius D 500, D 750 and APAGEO 48 for rocks and hard soils permitting the determination of mechanical characteristics by using MENARD pressuremeter. - a Super Penetrometer ANDINA for soils such as clays, gravels, cobbles and sands used also to realize plate load tests. - a Wagon Drill Ingersoll Rand LM 100 equipped with Jean LUTZ apparatus for the measuring drilling parameters. - a Hydraulic Crawler Rig Mustang Type S-52 CB (Atlas Copco) equipped with Rota Odex System. - a Hydraulic Crawler Rig Klemm Type KR 901 D equipped with Hydraulic drifter model 316.

- Air compressor 800 CMF Ingersol Rand Type 9/235-HA

- three Air compressors 375 CMF - Atlas Copco Type XAS 175 - Atlas Copco Type XA 186 - Ingersol Rand Type P-375 W.D.

- two complete sets of equipments for shotcrete and grouting including hydraulic pumps and mixers.

CORE DRILLING MACHINE - ATLAS COPCO D 500 , D750 AND APAGEO 48. The Atlas Copco Craelius D 500 , D 750 or APAGEO 48 are double tube core barrel machines designed for coring in any type of soil especially in rocks up to 300 m depth or more. These machines have the advantage of using tubes adapting to different core barrel diameters; so doing they provide the best core recovery ratio. Craelius D 500 or D 750 or APAGEO 48 do not give any direct measurement of soil properties in situ, but due to the high quality of coring, reliable laboratory tests can be performed on samples. SUPER PENETROMETER ANDINA The penetration test consists of pushing metal rods into the soil in a quasi-static way (less than 2 cm/sec) or a dynamic way. The point of the Andina Penetrometer is composed of a cone and a moveable sleeve located above the cone and surrounding a central rod. This penetrometer is designed to measure, continuously, the point resistance Rp and lateral friction Rf (unit lateral friction on the sleeve). Static penetration can be performed with a Ø 80 mm point and a lateral friction sleeve, 250mm long, or with a Ø 39 mm point in compact layers. For very compact layers, dynamic penetration is used with the Ø 39 mm point; dynamic energy of the hammer being 120 Kgm. Andina Penetrometer is designed to reach point resistance of more than 500 Kg/cm2, which allows the penetration and investigation of very compact layers such as dense sands, gravels, cobbles and marls.

The allowable bearing pressure on foundations and compressibility of soil can be deduced, in a safe way, from the point resistance Rp. On another hand, the ratio of the unit lateral friction Rf to the point resistance Rp is a characteristic of the soil nature, it allows a sure identification and classification of the encountered soils. The Penetrometer is credited for a long experience which had confirmed its capacity and reliability as an investigation tool. The advantages of the penetrometer, compared to other sounding procedures are:

- The Penetrometer furnishes a continuous reading of soil properties and this gives a precise "radiography” of soil layers. So doing, the penetrometer allows a precise location of foundation level (See penetration graph). - Reading and pushing of rods being simultaneous, no remolding of the soil occurs, as is the case for sounding procedures which dissociate boring and measurements. So doing, the Penetrometer allows measurement of undisturbed soil properties. - There is a direct analogy between penetration test and foundation, both are testing bearing capacity of soil in particular, using the analogy between a pile and penetrometer, this latter is the more efficient way to determine the bearing capacity of piles. - The Super Penetrometer ANDINA is designed for a wide range of tests: Super Penetrometer ANDINA is remarquable for its : RAPIDITY, PRECISION and SAFETY. Those qualities can be resumed in one : ECONOMY ECONOMY in cost of soil investigation ECONOMY in time ECONOMY in foundation cost.

APPARATUS JEAN LUTZ ( Logging while drilling) A continuous logging and measuring apparatus consists of several feelers mounted on the sensitive organs of the machine and a water tight box in which are placed a graphic recording apparatus as well as the electronic processing apparatus. This must be designed in such a way that it can be installed on the drilling machine itself and thus withstanding the difficult conditions found on working sites. "Continuous logging while drilling"is the measuring and the recording as a function of depth of a physical quantity measured directly on the drill machine while drilling. The variations of this quantity being in connection with the mechanical properties of the formation that is being drilled. This process consists of measuring the reactions of the machine, such as the variations in the rate of penetration, the change of pressure etc... which are characteristics of the changes in the nature of the subsoil. The parameters that are used at present are : - The instantaneous rate of penetration : DIAGRAFOR - The thrust on the bit (Weight on the bit) : P.O.

- The percussion wave reflected by the rock on the drill string or "noise" of the drill : VIBRALOG An apparatus for measuring the rate of penetration has the following minimal characteristics : - The apparatus is fully automatic. (Without any intervention from the driller) - The apparatus is able to show fissures less than one centimeter wide. - The apparatus is able to measure with the same precision very slow rates of penetration (about 1m/h when coring through hard rock) as well as very fast ones, which may reach 1000 m/h when drilling through cavities, karst, etc...

PRESSUREMETER MENARD It is our acquisition of January 92 to determine with more accuracy the mechanical characteristics of clays, marls and calcareous formations by measuring the limit pressure Pl and the deformation modulus E.
