NCS Basketball: STATE CHAMPS!
Clearly this year’s Lady Cavs team
was fueled for success. After
dropping their first game of the
season, the Lady Cavs ripped off 9
wins in a row before a disappointing
mid-season loss to Hampton Park.
The New Covenant girls responded
quickly as they rolled off another 9
consecutive wins including two
victories in the SCACS State
Tournament to finish 18-2 overall
and 6-0 in their conference.
Overcoming obstacles became the theme
of the season for the Cavalier boys. The
first obstacle, and arguably the biggest
obstacle the boys teams has faced since
its inception three years ago was when
Coach Miller ruptured his Achilles
tendon during mid-season practice.
So it was no surprise to anyone that
when they were down 14-2 early against
Foothills Christian School in the SCACS
State Championship game they did not
panic. They did what their coach had
taught them to do. They fought and
clawed their way back into the game and
ultimately came out on top to secure
their second straight SCACS 1A State
Championship.

Alumni Spotlight NCS Alumni hit the big screen!…
… the jumbotron at Clemson’s Littlejohn
Colosseum that is. Clemson University
hosted its annual Campus Movie Fest on
Wednesday, February 21st. The festival is
a free event open to everyone and
showcases the 16 best of all the short-film
entries. The entrants are photographed on
the red carpet, able to win various prizes,
and are treated with cookies, popcorn and
refreshments throughout the evening. The
entrants do not know if they were chosen
until their video is shown on the screen
(or not).

This year, NCS 2017 alums Chase
Harmon, Rebecca Lamb, Anna
Milford, Adam Mortenson,
Will Phillips and Taylor Skipper
entered the contest and were of the
16 chosen from 86 entries.
What an accomplishment for a first-
time freshman group! The short-
film, which had to be less than 5
minutes, titled, “Make A Friend”,
was written, directed, filmed and
edited by Adam Mortenson, who
came to enjoy film-making through,
of all things, NCS Spanish class.
Spanish teacher, Sra. Kelly
Wickiser encourages students to do
a semester project, with a video
(spoken in Spanish of course) as
one option. Adam and his star
actors, mentioned above, were so
elated to have been chosen and
were encouraged by the crowds
comments, cheering and clapping.
Fellow alums and former Spanish
video comrades, Brooke Carver and
Maddie Smith, were in attendance
as well and were able to share the
joyous moment. Who knows what
big screen you’ll find these alums
on next?

Spring 2018 Play The Importance of Being Earnest
The NCS Drama program was
rebuilt in 2014 and has been a
booming success ever since.
Everyone involved in the
production becomes a part of the
drama family.
Those familiar with previous
productions may remember that
seven wonderful seniors
graduated last year. These seniors
had been a vital part of the NCS
drama family.
This year’s cast is a mixture of
familiar and new faces. James
Curnow will be returning to the
stage. Curnow has been involved
in six drama productions. The
audience will also be delighted to
welcome new actors, such as John
Michael O’Neal, to the stage for
the first time.
Students have been hard at work
on this year’s spring production of
The Importance Of being
Earnest by Oscar Wilde. The play
will be preformed April 26, 27,
and 28. Mark your Calendar! We
hope to see you there.

In preschool, we learn letter
recognition, letter sounds, and how to
write letters. Then we start learning to
put those letters into words and we start
learning how to read those words. By
the end of K4, many of our students are
starting to read. Dr. Seuss books are
helpful to our students in helping them
to see that reading is fun! From
February 26 to March 2 we celebrate
Dr. Seuss week by dressing up and
reading the stories Dr. Seuss wrote. It
makes for fun school days, which brings
such joy and delight to our students.
“A joyful heart makes a cheerful
face, but when the heart is sad, the
spirit is broken.” Proverbs 15:13

Mrs. Bruynell’s K3 class during Dr. Seuss week
Our ultimate desire is for our students to be
able to read the Bible and all of the things
we learn in preschool are helping and
guiding our students in that direction.
For our preschool chapel time, we are
working on learning many songs and verses
about the Gospel. We talk about how we do
not have any good in us (ref. Romans 3:12)
and that we need Jesus to give us a new heart
so we can have the Holy Spirit in us to do
the things God wants us to do. We are
learning Proverbs 15:13, “A joyful heart
makes a cheerful face, but when the heart is
sad, the spirit is broken.” God tells us to be
joyful always, and a smiling face is a way
for us to know when someone has a joyful
heart. To go along with the Proverbs verse
we sing “If You’re Happy and You Know
It.” We truly desire that our students never
know a day without Jesus and that they see
Christ in all things. What a blessing to have
a school where this is top priority!

Grandparents &
Loved Ones Day
March 2018
This year, we celebrated our fourth annual
Grandparents and Loved Ones’ Day on February
9. We had over 300 guests come for this special
day. Our guests had a morning packed with
many fun activities, which included classroom
visits, cookie decorating with loved ones, book
fair shopping, live music to listen to while
enjoying coffee and muffins, art show for
viewing, and a performance by our preschoolers
to 5th graders.

Our Grammar School classes welcomed our
guests in their classrooms first thing that
morning and decorated cookies together.
Preschool classrooms were visited following the
performance. Our Book Fair was hosted by Alex
Alford, an Usborne Book Representative. The art
show and the live music was coordinated by Mrs.
Marie Wright, NCS Art Teacher and Librarian.
The art show was a display of artwork by our
kindergarteners to 5th graders.
The live music was performed by Noah Van
Wieren (10th), Olivia Burdette (8th), John
Michael O’Neal (12th), Elliott Wright
(10th), Kaitlin Curnow (10th), Zoe Wickiser
(11th) and Lily Wickiser (8th). Casey Keese
and Jenny McMahan and many other moms
worked very hard in decorating and
organizing the cookie decorating time. For
the performance, the preschoolers recited
Matthew 22:37-39 and sang several songs
about God’s love. The Grammar School
students shared many things they learn
during their Memory Meeting and shared
“Cookies: Bite-Sized Life Lessons” from
the books written by Amy Krouse
Rosenthal. Our students 5th grade and
younger were dismissed from school at
11:30 so they were able to spend more time
with their loved ones. The morning was
such a sweet time of fellowship! We are
always delighted to have our loved ones
here on our campus to share with them all
we are learning and the many ways God is
growing and blessing our school!

I have been a student at New
Covenant School since K-4. I am
very thankful to have been given the
opportunity to grow up in a school
that puts God first in everything they
do. Perhaps the most important
aspect of my education from New
Covenant was learning how to think
for myself and not just take
someone’s word for something. This
is a very important skill to have as I
move on to college next year where
not everyone will have the same
beliefs as me. The past three years I
have been able to play on the school
basketball team. Being on this team
has taught me things that could never
be learned in a classroom such as the
ability to follow and trust somebody
else’s leading and how to be a good
leader. Also, being able to say that I
won back to back state
championships in high school is a
pretty cool accomplishment.
After I graduate, I plan on attending
Clemson University and studying
Animal and Veterinary Sciences. The
education that I have received at New
Covenant will not only help me excel
in the classroom but also in almost
any other activity that I might choose
to do. I am confident that as I prepare
to move on from high school, I have
received the best possible education
as well as a strong rooting in my
faith.
