HOTBED FESTIVALHotbed is a festival of new writing produced by Menagerie Theatre Company. This year a snapshot of the festival will take place at Soho Theatre with 3 new One Act Plays and 6 monologues which have been commissioned as part of the ‘What’s Up Doc?’ series of plays.

What’s Up Doc? A project designed to bring ideas and people together. Each commission is a play written and created in response to a question or challenge established by a ‘Doc’ in conversation or correspondence with a writer. The ‘Docs’ are people who sit as Thought Leaders in their field (e.g academic, scientific, political).

SHORT SHARP SHOUTS

‘We’re thrilled that the Hotbed Festival is with Soho Theatre for the first time. Like us, Menagerie Theatre Company seek out and support talented writers to develop and produce innovative new theatre. It’s wonderful to help expand and develop its work searching out voices and stories we couldn’t imagine on our own.’

Valentijn Dhaenens’ acclaimed Bigmouth examines 2,500 years of oratory from Socrates to Osama bin Laden, from the rousing to the frankly inept. Performing fragments of famous and lesser known speeches to show how the tricks of the rhetorical trade have hardly changed over time, and showing how picking the right words can turn the weakest argument into the strongest, achieve world power, or simply win the hand of a beloved.

‘Enthralling roller-coaster through history and its (in)humanity.’ List

‘Brilliant … a fascinating experience.’ Lyn Gardner, Guardian

‘…it is in performance, and the skilled hands and mouth of Belgian virtuoso Valentijn Dhaenens, that this deceptively simple idea of one man and a few microphones morphs into an electrifying and transcendent piece of art.’ Exeunt

BIGMOUTHPERFORMANCE AND DIRECTIONS BY VALENTIJN DHAENENS

The sell-out hit of the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe from one of Europe’s hottest theatre companies to explode out of Belgium since Ontroerend Goed.
