The 2013 Conference USSSA has begunanother season that should prove to be itsmost exciting and competitive from top tobottom. It is difficult to argue that theConference is not only successful but it isflourishing. It appears there will be 45conference teams in 2013. They breakdown asthree (Major) teams, eight (A) teams, twenty-two (B) teams, and twelve (C) teams.

There is no denying the USSSA Conferencehas grown softball into a talent richcompetitive series. Today to be the best is toconsolidate resources with quality sponsors tocompete nationally.

Talented players and sponsored teams canexperience the Conference and compete at alevel that promotes better competition. Underthe Conference USSSA format the “B” and “C”teams enjoy the opportunity to compete against“A” or Major teams. There are many quality players spread

throughout Conference and non-Conference“B” and “C” teams. This is the top series thatpromotes all levels of men’s slow-pitchsoftball together.

This year looks to see a more competitivebalance across the 23 tournament events andmultiple World Series. The broadcast ofConference events can be found on severalonline sites and the Major World Series will becovered on ESPN 3 and USSSA Live this season. The tournaments also include non-conferenceteams. The anticipation around on-fieldcompetition has garnered much attention.

This season Conference USSSA has a verybalanced and talent rich “A” & “B” program withwholesale consolidations in the “A” programteam’s. It should prove to be a very competitiveseason across the board.

We polled coaches and players in theConference and the consensus is there hasbeen a serious collection of All-Stars on the top4 programs. Overall, most believe this is theyear to knock them off as many teams aretalent rich with up and coming future starsseeking to make their names and giverecognition to their sponsors.

In 2013 (3) three Major teams will take thefield. Laservision/Desert Falls/Boombah/Easton,the reigning Major World Series Champions,Resmondo/Worth (FL) andShoppe/TYJA/Louisville Slugger (TN) are talentrich and will be formidable each weekend.

They all have very successful histories andeach have added new personnel. The changeson the field have placed some emphasis onadding younger, more up and coming talent tomesh with their already proven veterans of thegame. The teams will be very strong and willcertainly renew annual rivalries asResmondo/Worth looks to get back on topthroughout the 2013 season. We believe a major

program will be Conference and Major WorldSeries Champion again in 2013.

Softball Today polling highlighted one thing, that many of the A & B programs werewelcoming the opportunity to compete with theMajor teams more than ever before. Thestrength and talent has now been distributedacross the landscape of lower programs. Thisshould provide younger talent access to makingits mark in today’s Conference USSSA program. We hope this creates more A&B upsets of the2013 Major team’s. The teams to watch at thetop of the A division are GTL/Doerflinger/R&MMetals/Easton (IA), Nordkap / Suncoast Reebok(MN), Albicocco/The Scene/Easton (NY), andDemarini/Dirty/Xtreme Athletics (FL).

We think they are the class of the eight “A”programs. GTL/Doerflinger/R&M Metals/Eastonare back as the defending A World Championswith some solid additions and sponsorship. Thefour mentioned contenders should have someepic battles during the season.

There will be no doubt that Linedrive,Taylormade, 4-TheFallen, and Sonny’s will havemuch to say as well. The division is ripe withcompetition for 2013. The strong A team’scombined with a strong collection of Bprograms should create an exciting “A” WorldSeries in 2013.

The “B” Conference USSSA has 22 teams and

is always the most competitive category. Itcombines the emerging new bloods with theveterans. It is often considered a division wheresolid defense, athleticism, and pitching reap itsrewards when all is said and done.

The early favorites are Red'sAstros/Louisville Slugger (IN), OC Swats/Easton(CA), Baugh Ford / Mojo / Louisville Slugger(MI), Buzini/Buffalo Wild Wings/Worth (MS), andXtreme/Miken (MN). This only being 25% of thedivision leaves plenty of room for Famous/Easton, Pure Romance, PrimeTime/Easton,Headhunter Chronicles/Baden, and an alwaysstrong Fence Brokers Inc/Hubs Pub/Game TimeSupply/Worth and Combat Rockstar.

All of these teams have benefitted from thedistribution of talent and new sponsorshipdollars. They still revel in beating each otherbecause ultimately they are eligible for multipleUSSSA World Series events. The stronger “B”teams are fearless. These programs will knockoff the teams above them because the timeshave changed and USSSA has helped in 2013in several ways. The Conference “B”tournament champion can earn a Major Worldseries birth. This is a great division of teams towatch within Conference USSSA with many ofthem regional.

The “C” Conference USSSA division is nowat 12 teams. Since more than half are unknown

In 2013 (3) three Major teams will take the field. Laservision/Desert Falls/Boombah/Easton, the reigningMajor World Series Champions, Resmondo/Worth (FL) and Shoppe/TYJA/Louisville Slugger (TN).

San Diego, CA-This time of year always reminds us ofthe goodwill and sacrifice people make for others. It canbe contributions of civilian community service members,Law Enforcement, First-Responders, Wounded Warriors, and our Retired and Active Duty service members.

A time of giving too many of the less fortunate whoserve us. We are honored by the recognition of our ActiveDuty military personnel and veterans for their tirelesscommitment to our freedoms. As many long-time softballplayers know the annual pilgrimage to the MarineT4T/Wounded Warrior/Operation Mend Classic andparticipation is a rebirth to renew old friendships andcontribute to worthy causes.

A time to celebrate life to help less fortunate children, service men and women, and their families throughout theUnited States experience the joy of our holidays up toEaster; to play an active role in the development of one ofour nation's most valuable resources - our children; to uniteall members of our local communities in a common causefor three months each year during the annual toy collectionand distribution campaign that touches so many families.

This event also coincides with a corporate awarenessfundraiser to benefit Southern California WoundedWarrior Project www.woundedwarriorproject.org andgive recognition to Operation Mendhttp://operationmend.ucla.edu to help change people'slives in a positive way.

The National Program Director stated "this eventalways represents giving and those who benefit from allthe participants gifts, are the real winners. It's inspiring tosee many of the same people each year competing, contributing, and having fun."

This event over 2 years has grown into the finestcollection of local, national, and corporate supporters, thebest of the best in helping Wounded Warriors and Children"The play is extraordinary featuring 15 teams this year. Itshould be pointed out that in 2012 the event added newcorporate sponsors that donated over $42,000.00 directlyto various support programs. A huge cash of Toys wasdonated that benefitted Toys-For-Tots. Their generosityremains anonymous by request.

A new program added this year was special programsfor deployed service members' children to have multiplesports training clinics and computer education. It includesprofessionals in softball, baseball, football, Lacrosse, swimming, and soccer. Easton Sports Chris Chaney, BrettHelmer, and multiple professional athletes will beparticipating in this program in 2013.

Yet it is the generosity of all the players and sponsor's

contributions that makes these gifts and giving to needychildren, service member's families, Operation Mend, andWounded Warrior Programs so impactful. There is strengthin numbers.

The history of the softball event gifting mirrors theefforts throughout the years of the United States MarineCorps incredible Toys-For-Tots program.

The Open Division of 15 teams played in a Bat ProvidedEASTON BRING UR REAL SKILZ format, saw strongperformances all day from multiple Command, Civilian, andContractor teams. The Homerun Competition was won byMarine David Thompson with 9 HR's out of 11 pitches.

The tournament concluded with undefeatedPowerhouses TSE TRADITION and WARRIORS-1 in a finalthat saw incredible defense early with a final inningfinish that would rival any softball championship. TSETRADITION riding a 5-run lead in the top of the seventhwould soon be tested. Warrior-1 down 7-2 rallied with a"Showtime"style 16-run seventh on 3 grand slams andtwo 2-run homers.

TSE TRADITION now a bit staggered entered the bottomof the seventh down 18-7. Four 2-run HRS with one outcutting the lead to 18-15 including a 450 foot bomb byMVP & Marine David Thompson inspired a rowdy crowd. After four hits by TSE TRADITION, the lead was narrowed to18-17. Warriors-1 walked the bases loaded after thesecond out of the inning.

The game in the balance, a two run single by PitcherChris Chaney gave TSE TRADITION the victory 19-18. Itwas a truly exciting tournament final. The Tournament MVPwas Marine David Thompson of TSE TRADITION and MajorArmando Delsi was the Offensive MVP.

Chris Chaney was the Defensive MVP with TSETRADITION. The winning team of TSE TRADITION donatedthe generous prize package and awards back to one of theevent beneficiaries.

Operation Mend & WWP Joey Paulk with Eastons's Chris Chaney.

Wounded Warrior Sgt. Odin Ayala enjoysthe festivities.

Oklahoma City, OK. --- A rite of passage for all ASANational Slow-Pitch Champions is a weekend in Hall ofFame stadium. It's now consistently broadcast on mediawhere everyone has the opportunity to watch. Theviewership and fan attendance was a record in 2012 andwas hampered by a constant rain all day Saturday. Awelcomed rain for the 2012 ASA "A" National ChampionsSonny's Softball Club based out of Casper, Wyoming.

This year featured defending ChampionAnnihilation/Easton that was still one of the true all-starsquads and a recent two time winner under differentnames. Easton's Brett Helmer was looking for his 5th ASAtitle going back to Chaney's/Easton in 2006. The qualityof players and parity certainly has improved in the 2012National Championship.

The challengers to the throne in 2012 werepowerhouses Desert Falls/Demarini/Dirty (4th), Nordkap(5th), U.S. Armed Forces (9th), TeamReebok/Longhaul/TYJA (9th), Sonny's Softball Club (1st),and 3rd Street Financial/Team Cincinnati (2nd). In thepast favorite teams such as Team Combat/PacificHeadwear (10th), Diosa (7th) BBS/Miken (5th), andShoppe/Team TPS/Elite (9th) have struggled at thischampionship.

The tournament moved along very quickly as many ofthe early favorites fell to red hot newcomers. The finalfour of this event was lead by winners bracket champs3rd Street Financial/Team Cincinnati with a collaborationof the Queen City's best Non-RPL players.

Desert Falls lost a closely contested game to 3rd

Street 37-36. Sonny's sailed past Annihilation/Easton withan upset 36-30 scoring 15 runs in the 5th inning. Sonny'slooked poised with consistent hitting and strategichomerun usage. It proved important in their ladder games.

The winners finals was now set as Sonny's Softball Clubbased out of Casper, Wyoming would face 3rd StreetFinancial of Cincinnati, Ohio. This Saturday night game waswell fought throughout. 3rd Street Financial, the favorite atthis time, mounted a 5th inning barrage to draw the gameclose at 27-26.

The 6th inning ended with Sonny's on top with a 36-32convincing lead. 3rd Street battled with defense to holdSonny's scoreless in the top of the 7th inning. 3rd StreetFinancial began the bottom of the 7th trailing and quicklycut the lead to 1 run 36-35.

They loaded the bases and with the game in thebalance 3rd Street Financials Dan Houchin stepped in andblasted a game winning walk-off grand slam to win thegame. They would now await the winner ofAnnihilation/Easton and Sonny's Softball Club.

Sonny's started slowly trailing Annihilation by 8 runs inthe 3rd inning. Sonny's jumped on Annihilation pitching inthe 4th and 5th innings scoring 22 runs and lead after 6innings. Sonny's reached the top of the 7th inning with a 7run lead and 2011 defending National ChampionsAnnihilation appeared confident with 3 remaining bombs.

Annihilation cut the lead to 4 runs in top of the 7th withmen at first and second. What happened next was theunthinkable for Annihilation; a force play at 2nd base on asmash followed by a snap throw and backdoor tag out atthird base for the second out. The batter then attempted tocapture second and was tagg ed out. It was an amazing 4-

6-5-6 triple play to end the contest. Sonny's would nowhave to double dip a powerful 3rd Street Financial for arevenge National Title fight.

The Championship game was a battle of wills as bothteams started sluggish. It was Sonny's that took control of the3rd, 4th, and 5th innings and took a 20-8 lead into theseventh inning. Sonny's was lead by Chris Greinert (MVP &1st Team All American) and fellow 1st team All AmericansJonathan Lenz, West Guill, Lexi Ramirez, and Manny Lariano.

3rd Street Financial mounted a late inning comebackbut would lose 20-15 as Sonny's now smelled blood in thewater and a National Title looming. The "if" game featuredintense action on both sides of the ball and that impactedthe final results.

3rd Street Financial controlled the early innings withdefense and a resolute offense and lead Sonny's 18-10.Sonny's found their offense in the 6th inning with a 7 runoutburst and went into the 7th inning down 18-17. The 7thinning was a nail biter and held all the anxiety one could takewith the ASA "A" National Championship in the balance.

3rd Street Financial had two outs with a runner on firstin Sonny's top of the seventh. Sonny's Brian Faria steppedin and launched a timely 2 run-homer that gave Sonny's a1 run lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning.

Sonny's pitcher Danny Lopez (DLO) fighting a brokenthumb stepped in and served up three outs with a line driveto first and a 5-3 groundout. The game ended in DLO'S gloveas he snared a smash directly at him for Sonny's "A" ASANational Championship in 2012. "This was very satisfyingfor us who were together all season and giving Sonny thisASA Title means a lot to each of us," stated tournament MVPand first team All American Chris Greinert.

Bigger Sweet Spot. No Hand Sting. Slight End Load.In the CF6 Insane, we’ve given the -10 a little end load for the punch and power of a -9. This year, we’ve added the all-new D-Fusion handle. By eliminatingvibration, it allows us to crank up the performance on an end-loaded barrel without sacrificing confidence. So if you’re feeling deranged, pick this sucker up andstart swinging out of your mind.

Paradox BarrelUsing our new Paradox Composite, we’ve made a stronger composite that is shaped to perform softer. This makes for a bigger, hotter, more responsive sweet spot, which leads to consistently powerful results.

Stacked Double Wall ConstructionTwo is better than one. The next generation of Stacked Double Wall creates a trampoline effect across the entirety of the barrel, optimizing performance.

Geo End CapThe Geo End Cap is designed to maintain the responsiveness of the CF6 barrel while allowing us to increase the end-load for more power.

D-Fusion HandleGives you the best of both worlds. An end loaded barrel as hot as possible while eliminating vibrations from miss hits.

By Jeff Berlinicke

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., --- At Walt Disney World, thesoftball season never ends.

Disney Sports offers amateur athletes, coaches andtheir families the opportunity to train, compete, gainrecruitment and celebrate like the pros at ESPN Wide Worldof Sports Complex. From Disney Softball Spring Training, which includes teams from all over the country, high schooland college, to the rest of the year when travel teamsranging from youngsters playing fast pitch, to veteransplaying slow pitch, the nine fields at Disney’s well-manicured ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex are packedthroughout the year, but getting to Disney is just the start.

Disney didn’t make its fortune offering freebies, soteams at every level have to start raising funds in advance. To help, Disney offers financial assistance throughfundraising programs, early registration discounts, andmultiple team incentives.

Disney makes every effort to attract teams from aroundthe country at every age and skill level. From attendingnational trade shows and clinics to create awareness, tohaving their sales team get in touch with travel teams andhigh schools, Disney’s goal is to allow every athlete theopportunity to experience playing at the next level at ESPN

Wide World of Sports Complex. “We contact them year-round,’’ said Jeff Sturgeon,

Manager of Sports Development at Walt Disney World. “Wewant the best teams we can get and we make sure to fit itin to their schedule.’’

The peak time of the year is March and April, whenhigh schools and colleges from all over the countryflock to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex forDisney Spring Training. More than 400 high schoolsand colleges came to Florida this year to participate inmultiple sports including softball, baseball, lacrosse, tennis, and golf. Almost half of those schoolsattended for Softball Spring Training.

Oklahoma is built around the best. In softball, a dominant pitcher often times is the

difference that determines the outcome of a game or evena championship. The Sooners have one of the best pitchersin college softball in Keilani Ricketts. Last year, she steeredOklahoma to the Women’s College World Series for asecond straight year before the journey fell just short in aback-and-forth best-of-3 championship series not decideduntil the third game.

This season, Ricketts is at it again, making the Soonerscontenders once more. In early April, the Sooners were theNo. 1 ranked team in the country. Understandably so, afteran impressive showing a few weeks earlier at the JudiGarman Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton.

Oklahoma went 5-0 with five shutouts at the Fullertontournament. The Sooners outscored their opponents, 33-0.Ricketts allowed just six hits and three walks, whilestriking out 27 in 17 innings to go 3-0 in the tournament. That included a 4-0 shutout over No. 14 Arizona in whichshe allowed just three hits. She also had three hits anddrove in two runs from the plate during the tournament.

“She was on her game,” Oklahoma first basemanLauren Chamberlain said of Ricketts following the win overArizona in an interview with SoonerSports.com. “I thinkthat gets the rest of the team on her level. We see herexcitement on playing a ranked team and just getting afterthis win, and we just want to get on with it.”

Ricketts improved to 13-0 following the win over theWildcats in which she struck out seven and walked one.Chamberlain hit a pair of home runs in the win, crankingher third leadoff homer of the season. She also belted asolo shot to left to lead off the fourth inning.“I was just trying to be productive at the plate, get thingsgoing for my team,” Chamberlain said. “This is amomentum game, and I was just trying to use my leadoffspot to get things going.”

Outfielder Brianna Turang went 2 for 3, Ricketts was 1for 2 and center fielder Destinee Martinez was 1 for 3 witha stolen base. Oklahoma’s win over Arizona bumped the Sooners’ recordto 9-1 against ranked teams through that point in theseason. Oklahoma outscored those 10 opponents, 61-4.

“I think we just go in with a mentality of bowing up, andthat we’re ranked No. 1 for a reason,” Chamberlain said.“We’re just trying to keep playing Sooner softball.”

Michigan went 4-1, picking up three big-time wins overPac-12 perennial powers. The No. 15 Wolverines beat No.18 Washington, 6-1, as freshman Sierra Romero hit twosolo home runs, Lauren Sweet blasted a three-run homerand sophomore pitcher Sara Driesenga allowed five hitsand a walk while going the distance to pick up the win.

Michigan knocked off No. 2 Arizona State, 5-4,overcoming a 4-2 fourth-inning deficit to hand the SunDevils their second loss of the season in their first 29

Delanie Gourley lifted El Capitan High to newheights than the school had ever achieved, andthat was in only her junior season. Gourley wasnamed the 2012 Softball Athlete of the Year atthe 2012 Prep Athletes Awards Gala, hosted bythe San Diego Sports Commission.

By Jeff Berlinicke

A softball pitcher is so much different than a baseballpitcher. A baseball pitcher gets the ball once every fivedays and is on a strict pitch count.

Softball is another story. Many of the best highschool teams in the nation use one pitcher the majorityof the time and, when it’s time for the post-season orthe regular season, a girl can pitch as many as fourcomplete games in one day, then be expected to goright back at it the next day.

Then, add the responsibility that comes with being themost important player on the team. Good softball teamsrarely get into high scoring shootouts. Typically, at thehighest level, it comes down to one run. One bad pitch canruin everything. That’s a load for anyone to carry. Besidesthat, many great softball pitchers are usually the cleanuphitter, the one that has to score the winning run at bat, thenhold onto the lead from the mound.

Here are four pitchers who love the responsibility and,,after chasing a state high school softball championship, are moving on to the next level at Division I.

DELANIE GOURLEY(El Capitan High School, Lakeside, Calif.)

Delanie Gourley lifted El Capitan High to new heightsthan the school had ever achieved, and that was in only herjunior season. They defeated arch-rival Santana for thefirst time in years, then did it again to win the CIF SanDiego Championship game. It was the first title in schoolhistory, and they’ve been playing softball for more than 40years at El Capitan.

Is chasing the San Diego California InterscholasticFederation Record of 1,106 Ks, Gourley was named the2012 Softball Athlete of the Year at the 2012 Prep AthletesAwards Gala, hosted by the San Diego Sports Commission. She tallied 345 Ks her junior season, 335 her sophomore

year and 323 her first year at El Capitan. Gourley has eightno-hitters through her high school career and registered a0.52 ERA her junior season to go along with a .544 battingclip and a .656 on-base percentage.

Gourley, also earned a scholarship to travel acrosscountry and pitch for the University of Florida. “Delanie is agame-changer and program-changer,’’ said Florida coachTim Walton. She’s a great kid, fun to watch and she’s trulyan infectious player. Delanie is a left-handed pitcher withthe ability to be a strikeout pitcher. She knows how tocompete to the end and she knows how to win.”

With her travel ball team, Gourley led the So CalAthletics squad to both the 2011 and 2012 PGF 18UNational Championship Titles.

"It has been a great pleasure having Delanie on oursoftball team for the past 4 years. She is an outstandingplayer, but she is also an awesome person. Said El CapitanHigh school softball coach Joe Cota.

SYDNEY LITTLEJOHN (Rusk High School, Rusk, Texas)

Texas is noted for its college softball schools andSydney Littlejohn would have been a natural at Texas,Texas A&M or any of the other powerhouses, but she’sheading east to suit up at Alabama next season.

Alabama is a power all by itself, winning the nationalchampionship in 2012. At 6-1, 180, she’s big enough forthe college game and can bring the heat with her fastball.

Littlejohn has already had plenty of success. Her 16-select travel team, Texas Glory-Naudin faced some of thebest travel teams in the country last summer. She went 6-1 with a 1.72 ERA and struck out 69 batters in 53 innings.

She’ll join a loaded Alabama staff next year, so shewon’t be getting the ball every day, but Alabama coach

BAYLEE CORBELLO (Sam Houston High School, Lake Charles, La.)

For Baylee Corbello, she wasn’t so sure she’d get ashot at winning her third straight championship lastseason. Winning championships is all she has knownsince ninth grade, but her school moved up a class, which meant tougher competition.

No problem. Corbello led Sam Houston to a 2-1 winin the state title game, the championship game being a2-1 win in nine innings. Corbello won the Miss SoftballAward by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association

For the season, Corbello went 23-4 with a 0.86earned run average and 337 strikeouts in 179innings. At the plate, she hit .496 with 3 home runsand 39 RBIs. One of the homers came in thechampionship game.

Unlike many of the top pitchers in prep softball,Corbello, who combines a riser with some great off-speed pitches, decided to stay close to home. She’llpitch at Louisiana State University, joining a strongfreshman class throughout the Southeast Conference.

LSU coach Beth Torina said Corbello will be a perfectfit in Baton Rouge.

"As talented as Baylee is on the mound, her mentalgame is what gives her the greatest edge,’’ Torina said.“She is a fierce competitor and will do whatever ittakes to help LSU win."

Patrick Murphy said she’ll be a valuable addition."Sydney is going to be a great addition to our pitching

staff," Murphy said. "At 6-1, her height gives her animmediate great presence on the mound. Sydney haspitched at a high level of competition for years.’’

Littlejohn led her club team to a runner-up finish at the2011 PGF Fastpitch National Championships, as well as toa fourth-place finish at the ASA Gold Nationals in OklahomaCity in 2012.

SHANNON SMITH(Milford High School, Milford, Mass.)

It takes some time to digest the numbers Shannon Smithhas put up during her first three years in high school.Entering her senior year she had a career batting averageof .450, struck out 861 batters and has posted a 61-3career record to go with nine no-hitters and five perfectgames. She’s also filled the school showcase with twoGatorade Massachusetts Softball Player of the Year awards.

Smith is headed for the University of Kentucky next falland she’ll bring her nasty 60-plus mile and hour fastball togo with some devastating breaking stuff. Kentucky coachRachel Lawson knew she got a steal when she was able toget Smith over some of the more well-known powers.

“Shannon not only has an array of pitches, butpossesses an outstanding ability to pitch the ball exactlywhere she wants to when the game is on the line,’’ Lawsonsaid. “This pinpoint precision is essential when facing theoutstanding line-ups in the SEC.”

Sydney Littlejohn has already had plenty of success. Her 16-select travel team, Texas Glory-Naudin facedsome of the best travel teams in the country last summer. She went 6-1 with a 1.72 ERA and struck out 69batters in 53 innings.

For the season, Baylee Corbello went 23-4 with a 0.86earned run average and 337 strikeouts in 179 innings. Atthe plate, she hit .496 with 3 home runs and 39 RBIs. Oneof the homers came in the championship game.
