PRESIDENT’S LETTER
“I’m not worried about artificial intelligence giving computers the ability to think like humans. I’m more concerned about people thinking like computers
without values or compassion, without concern for consequences. That is what we need you to help us guard against. Because if science is a search in the
darkness, then the humanities are a candle that shows us where we’ve been and the danger that lies ahead.” - Apple CEO Tim Cook

Dear Graduates,It is truly a privilege to be here with you, your families and friends on such a remarkable and important day My warm welcome goes out to all of you Let me also thank our distinguished faculty, trustees, and staff for their outstanding efforts in making this day possible Today is all about you It marks one more step in your already amazing success story It represents the culmination of your efforts and investments towards achieving your academic, professional and personal growth goals Although you’ve come far, this pinnacle is actually just a new beginning, one that will lead to even greater accomplishments and contributions You will leave here today and embark on a journey to transform the world, making a positive impact on both those around you and the wider world by paying your knowledge forward and applying all that you learned and experienced
For some of you, this impact will be felt in the field of technology In 2014, the visionary foresight of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology came forward full force as Sofia University chose to bring technology together with transpersonal psychology to provide a humanistic foundation for a new breed of students That vision is now realized as the University achieves its very first milestone by graduating its first cohort of students from the Master of Science in Computer Science program
What does this mean? It means that as data scientists, software designers, transformative technologists and computer engineers, you are empowered with the transpersonal values that Tim Cook felt were key elements that guarded people from thinking like computers with no regard for the consequences Now, when society begins to worry about how AI will replace humans, or how drones can be used to kill more people in war, a new breed of engineers is entering the marketplace that has the perspective to use these same technologies for good Because of your time here, you have the power to impact others using cutting edge technology in positive, rather than harmful ways You have been given the tools to make choices and decisions that move humanity forward in ways that compassionately promote human welfare Dear Graduates, I trust that you will represent Sofia University with energy and pride Whether as our psychologists, counselors, coaches, data scientists or business leaders, we will be looking to you to make a difference
Thank you and Congratulations Class of 2017!

TSULTRIM GYATSO RINPOCHEJIA CUO2017 HONORARY DOCTORATE AWARDEE“In Buddhism, love is mercy. When we go to love the world with compassion, war and killing will stop; the families of war and the children- their suffering will be lost and our face will no longer be a world of unrest. When we love the environment, people will have a harmonious relationship with nature.”
Tsultrim Gyatso Rinpoche ( Jia Cuo) has been nominated by the Board of Trustees for the Honorary Doctorate at Sofia University because of his contributions in the areas of spiritualty and public service that are in alignment with the mission and values of Sofia University
Gyatso Rinpoche is deeply committed to building a compassionate world by illuminating and encouraging the interconnections that unite us across differences of language, culture, religion, or worldview As a spiritual guide he integrates modern ideas and technology atop a foundation of traditional Buddhist wisdom He has also worked to create a model for teaching in this new era that spreads wisdom and purifies minds
He is a deeply knowledgeable scholar and experienced educator, having dedicated many years of his life to spreading the teachings of the Buddha, promoting ethnic cultural revival and supporting education in remote rural areas He is also a practitioner of environmental consciousness, spreading the message of environmental protection wherever he goes and setting an example of a positive, healthy society through his deeds
Gyatso Rinpoche has hosted four workshops on Buddhism, mindfulness and meditation at Sofia University In 2015, the International Center for Mindfulness and Meditation was created between his Ci Ai Foundation and the ITP Foundation to contribute to the goals of the Institute In December 2016, the Center hosted a mindfulness and meditation workshop at Stanford, which attracted more than 200 people from the local community
In 2014, Gyatso Rinpoche’s book, “All is According to the Best of Plans” was published, quickly climbing high in the ranks of Amazon and Dangdang book sales Since then, the book has become a kind of modern maxim to sooth the soul and encourage spiritual growth, the cultivation of an open mind, better acceptance of life changes and the willingness to listen with a calm heart
GEORGE ZIMMER2003 HONORARY DOCTORATE KEYNOTE SPEAKER
“To succeed in business and maximize innovation in the 21st century, we need to unleash the energy and potentials that lie within meaningful relationships and inspired human connectedness. To build productive human relationships, the essential ingredients are trust and fairness - supported by competence, authenticity, caring, compassion and kindness. We must inspire creativity, encourage risk-taking, and boost the cultivation of reciprocity.”
George Zimmer is the father of four children and an American entrepreneur who founded both the Men’s Wearhouse and Generation Tux He is currently the Chairman and CEO of Generation Tux, as well as a member of the Board of Directors for the Institute of Noetic Sciences and the Oakland Zoo
George is a lifelong advocate of servant leadership as the most effective business management model In addition, he is also a spokesman for “conscious capitalism” to address income inequality, excessive CEO pay and a stakeholder as compared to a shareholder model He uses his intuition and passion for consciousness research and transpersonal psychology to guide his work
In the early 2000’s George’s mother was ravaged by cancer It was then that George began to support research into the therapeutic use of MDMA He has also supported fundamental research on medical marijuana
Synchronicity at work! George’s ties to Sofia/ITP have come full circle Not only is he connected to PhD Chair Marilyn Schlitz through their interactions at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, but he is also connected to 2016 Honorary Doctorate and Professor of Consciousness Deepak Chopra, whom he invited to be on the board of his company in 2004

DANA ALSHIRAWI, PH.D.IN MEMORIAM
Grace and graciousness, that was Dana Alshirawi, who sadly and untimely passed away on March 6, 2017 She had completed the requirements for her Ph D just three months prior Her dissertation, a labor of love she called “El Azima” (or the Great One), was the exploration of the personal power of Bahraini Muslim women Her dissertation advisor, Dr Jenny Wade, and her committee, considered it an original, compelling and significant piece of work
In a previous life, prior to transforming her life to study Transpersonal Psychology in California, Dana earned her
bachelor’s degree from Duke University in the early 90s, majoring in biology and political science After graduation, she worked in the fast-paced world of international finance, holding positions at prominent firms in New York, London, and Bahrain
After her beloved father’s unexpected and heartbreaking passing in 2004, Dana decided to leave the finance and business world for something different in California That something different was the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology
Dana arrived to study transpersonal psychology in the fall of 2006, moving halfway around the world to Palo Alto from her native country of Bahrain She immediately thrived in her studies at ITP and later interned at the ITP’s Community Center for Health & Wellness (CCHW) and Momentum for Mental Health in San Jose
Along the way, she developed a love for, and became a certified teacher in, the Enneagram in the Narrative Tradition She absolutely loved “doing” the Enneagram on the people in her life She was a 9, the mediator, the peacemaker She was also a Reiki Master Teacher
Dana lived a life of kindness, generosity, and unflinching hospitality (she loved hosting dinners for friends) She was a foodie, trying all the best Bay Area restaurants (Evvia, in Palo Alto, was her all-time favorite) She enjoyed traveling and exploring (she went to Burning Man in 2013 and 2015)
She is survived by her loving husband, Nauman (they met at a Meetup called the Palo Alto Fine Dining Club), her mother and 5 sisters (Seema, Reema, Serene, Rania, Mimi), her California best friends: Meghan, Miranda, Shoshona, Asma; and her Bahraini best friends: Dina, Eileen, May, Deyana

MICAH LINTON, M A www micahlinton com2015 Sofia University AlumnusMaster’s Degree in Transpersonal Psychologywith a specialization in Creativity and Innovation
Micah Linton, M A , is a psychological assistant who integrates creative expression with trauma informed treatment while pursuing a doctoral degree in clinical psychology His passion for the creative has provided many success stories
In conjunction with UCLA’s Creative Mind Project, Linton founded the Arts and Healing program at Safe Place for Youth (SPY), a drop-in center for youths experiencing homelessness in Venice, CA The program brings in facilitators trained in the expressive arts to offer modalities ranging from yoga and mindful meditation to mandala making and 3D printing for homeless youths aged 12-25
As a visual artist, Micah continues to be stimulated by the diversity ofperspectives and expressions that manifest through the mutual exchange of self-discovery He is constantly motivated to work with new materials and methods of expression that can promote ways of inner knowing and self-awareness His artwork and writings on inner knowing have been published in the International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Micah’s experience in the entertainment industry along with his current clinical work assist him in developing insights vital to his future work as a clinical psychologist as well as serving as the conceptual basis for a virtual reality project under development “As a way of inner knowing, creativity involves openness to new experiences and I feel
the process of visual creation taps into an unconscious realm where mental imagery intertwines with memories, fantasy, and dreams that can lead to new perceptions
while the conscious interpretation of meaning allows for an integration of experience that can promote self-discovery. As such, I aim to provide methodologies that foster
personal growth through the visual arts.”

DIANE LUCILLE MEYER, Ph D www dianemeyerart com 2013 Sofia University Alumna Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology with a concentration in Transpersonal Psychology
My own evolution as an artist began at the very early age of 4 with dance, moving on to theater, and finally painting at the age of 22 with water and watercolor I
am 64 in April 2017 It was 1975 when that creative urging, and what Rosemarie Anderson (Anderson & Braud, 2011) calls “beloveds”, (art) found a home in me
My watercolor paintings have always been about the intimate conversation between the art and me Teaching students to listen and respond within their own divine creative conversations served to be not just healing, but more a path to reassurance and re-membering of self while negotiating with an unexplainable “other” through no use of words
In hindsight, this journey has been one of empathy, and that inquiry of empathy governed my path until now and will govern my future I work with artists teaching them to paint and to find their own sacred artistic language, to understand the internal culture within their creative work I also work to facilitate an empathic inquiry in the healthcare environment with the clinicians, staff, and volunteers
“For me, the real work I do in my outer world, my true intentions come from my deep internal journey and evolution as an artist. I feel strongly that the people I know
and influence must first recover self, travel along self-empathy in order to be able to forgive and set aside their wounds, so they can wholeheartedly be present with the
suffering of others.”
