My first sock book was Nancy Bush’s Folk Socks (Interweave Knits, 1994). As a sock novice, I was quickly caught up in the front matter, the alluring ways to turn a heel and taper a toe for a fit as neat as Cinderella’s slipper.

The three designs in this little book offer more sock allure. Star Athena’s Seven Layer Cake socks are a sweet riff on Victorian details with lace edg-ing and dainty ties, Michele Wang’s Petit Fours uses a modern, unfussy wrapped eyelet in patterns on cuff and foot, and Cookie A’s Harbor Bar pair works a Fair Isle pattern on right and wrong sides and finishes with an af-terthought heel.

Many thanks to Cookie A, Michele Wang, and Star Athena for their imagina-tive designs, all worked in Finch, our classic fingering-weight. It’s wool, of course. The better to keep your feet cozy, dry, comfy, and pretty.
