What is Sociology?

Roots in the 19th century, originally sought to establish laws of human society itself

Sociology is about how societies work Sociology is about how societies break down Sociology is about relationships of power

Looks at relationships between people, and people and social institutions

How people interact within and transform relationships


Developing a ‘Sociological Imagination’

Theoretical – draw on and devise concepts that can describe and explain the way(s) society works

Empirical – conducting research that investigates the concepts and theories that are developed

Relational – linking the conceptual and empirical to shape knowledge and understanding and inform policy
