PROGRAM HOST –

JIM MADERITZPlant Manger, Twinsburg Facility Quality Synthetic Rubber

Strengthened by a merger with Lexington Rubber in 2012, QSR’s skilled workforce offers customers a unique combination of technical expertise, advanced manufac-turing practices and something seldom available from rubber companies—product development.

Engineers know they can rely on QSR’s engineer-ing, research, development and technical expertise to meet all their needs for products requiring a high level of engineering due to material proper-ties, temperature requirements and tight toleranc-es. In fact, the majority of insulator and connector seal material for products QSR manufactures is internally compounded from proprietary formula-tions.

QSR principal product lines include:

• Connector seals used in electrical connectors and wire harnesses to protect connections from harmful elements like oil, water, salt and dust

• Insulators for automotive ignition systems to seal and insulate terminals on the spark plug and distributor

I am very excited to announce that the Board of Directors has embarked on two new projects to fulfill our mission of promoting education in the plastics industry.

First, we have agreed to start a new and separate Scholarship Fund that will be underwritten by contri-butions from individuals and corporations to supple-ment our current scholarship efforts. As members of the Cleveland Section, I hope that you will consider a donation of any amount and also help with soliciting contributions from your employer or other philanthropic individuals. Our section is listed as a 501 (c)(3) orga-nization so that all donations will be tax deductible. I personally will be contributing and I hope that you will consider joining us in this endeavor. We will notify the membership as soon as this Scholarship Fund is creat-ed and how to make contributions.

Secondly, we have initiated conversations with area Community Colleges to consider creating an Associ-ates Degree program in a Plastics related field. I have been involved in years past in the start up of two suc-

cessful programs and hope that we can be successful here in the Cleveland area. The key to the successful start up of such a program is for an actively engaged local section to provide support for the program. We will need to convince an accredited community college that there is a need in the Cleveland Area for such a program and that the Cleveland Section of SPE will actively support the program through an Industry Advi-sory Board, student recruitment, industry experienced guest lecturers and through scholarship assistance. Once again, I solicit your assistance in bringing this worthwhile endeavor to fruition.

Please contact me if you are interested in participat-ing on an Industry Advisory Board at [email protected] or 419-357-9577.

CALL FOR NEW BOARD MEMBERS

CALL FOR PAPERS

As a member of the Cleveland Section, please consider volunteering for a board position. Several positions are available depending on your interest. The work of the board is critical and relies on technical, commercial, industrial or academic leaders like yourself to achieve our mission. In addition, the expe-riences gained are invaluable. Please contact the Communication Chair at [email protected] for details.

May Conference John Carroll University

SPE Cleveland has been offered a presentation session at the Microscopy Society of Northeast Ohio’s annual May conference. The conference will be conducted on John Carroll University’s pic-turesque campus in University Heights OH on May 22, 2019.

The conference gathers stakeholders from local universities, businesses and technical societies to-gether to present and exhibit in the fields of chem-istry, spectroscopy, microscopy and more.

The main topics for our session will be Plastics and

Polymers, but can include any subject within those fields, though it may be best to focus on analytical methods.

We are asking for 3 or 4 presentations from our members or your companies to make up a full speaker session at the event. If you, or someone at your company or facility have a topic, project or presentation you would like to present, please reach out to our Communications Chair at [email protected] for registration information.

We appreciate your consideration of presenting at the event and hope that you can help us build an informative and beneficial session.

RECENT AND UPCOMING EVENTS:

DATE: OCTOBER 26, 2018 Speaker notes: Mr. Dwight D. Morgan

As Vice President of Corporate Development, Mr. Morgan is responsible for strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, corporate development, and marketing processes. He also oversees M. Holland’s international operations. He joined M. Holland in February 2015 and is a member of the Executive Leadership Team. the company. In 2013, he joined The Composites Group (TCG) as vice president of sales and marketing where he par-ticipated in integrating three business units and prepared the business for its eventual merger with Citadel Plastics in 2014.

Outline of Mr. Morgan’s presentation:

OVERVIEW OF MA HOLLAND BUSINESS MODEL

• ~ $1.2 B in sales• Wide polymer portfolio from PES to PP.

OVERVIEW OF POLYMER INDUSTRIES AND CHANGES

Globalization• Causes consolidation• Instant Gratification customers• Mass customization

Shale Revolution• US now the low cost producer

Environmentalism• Recycling rate too low to be the only solu-

tion.• Re-use• Biodegradable• Incineration• Catalytic Transformation• Depolymerization

Technology Developments• Graphene• 3-D Printing• Self-assembly• 4-D Printing

Q&A from students:

Suppliers must take the lead on environmentalism, not government.

Biodegradable polymer is not the solution as it re-quires oxygen (unlikely in a landfill), and even when it does degrade, it creates a microplastic problem.

Career advice includes finding a mentor, network.

OCTOBER 15, 2018 TECHNICAL PROGRAM

Advances in Halogen Free FR Technology for Polyolefins by Bob Weiler

Use of halogen-free fire retardant technology subjects included:

I. Increased use of electronics and batteries in cars and increased use of PP for fuel efficiency causes a need for halogen-free FR.

II. Fire in structures are still an issue.

III. Review of combustion mechanism

a. FR deprives fire of oxygen

b. Metal hydroxide emits water, which lowers the temperature.

c. Intumescent foam acts as an insulator, and the char is a barrier to the fuel source.

IV. Tests for selection

a. Limiting oxygen index.

b. UL 94 test.

c. Cone Calorimeter.

V. Regulations are important and they differ with each state.

NEW BUSINESS:D. Meade again proposed the CLE Section SPE Endowment Fund idea. The funds will come from individuals, companies, etc. D. Crist noted that the CTSC has a list of donors that we might be able to ask. D. Meade proposed that we establish the fund, which will be separate from all other expenses. The motion passed with 9 yes, 1 no vote.

TREASURER:J. Sovis circulated the Treasurer’s Report for the first six months of 2018. Members reviewed the charitable organi-zation fee, and we are current on this. Members agreed to allow up to $250 to be spent on the CASE event on 10-26-18. Members noted that the memo section of the check should note “donation”.

COMMUNICATIONS:C. Potter announced that Charlie Martin of the Extrusion Division will conduct multiple 1-day Extrusion Mini-Techni-cal Conferences in 2019. The Divisional group already has sponsors and is well organized. Cleveland Section is inter-ested in support a conference in Cleveland in 2019 and is willing to help in site selection. J. Blayne, D. Meade and C. Potter will gain further details with a conference call with the extrusion Division.

COUNCILOR:J. Blayne circulated his report and noted that there is a major change in that our section will now have to pay for insurance for the section. This will cost approximately $450/yr. with the policy beginning in 1-1-19. Payment is due 11-15-18.

Meade will work on and update the scholarship application.D. Meade reviewed the Associates Degree Program at Lorain Community College. The dean of engineering, Kelly Zelesnik, has asked the members to gather information about employers in Lorain County with estimates of starting salaries for someone with an associates degree. B. Opalko noted that although his employer, Biothane, is in Lorain County, the salary figure might be hard to get.

FUTURE PROGRAMS: There was a brief discussion about asking the curator of Plastics Pioneers at Syracuse University to present a talk at a future program.
