n a country unabashedly obsessed with Bollywood, other

genres often have trouble finding an appreciative audience.

But, for quite a few years now, things have been looking

up for those in alternative music. Avenues and opportunities

have opened up in the form of music festivals and live music

spaces at restaurants and pubs. India has never witnessed such

conception and influx of music festivals ever before.

Nearly all these festivals focus on non-Bollywood music.

Having spread across genres and cities, festivals such as

Sunburn, NH7 Weekender and Mahindra Blues Festival

have been incredible crowd-pullers, which reinforces their

popularity. For musicians, it has meant visibility, playing to

an interested crowd, press coverage and accolades. Television

Despite a rise in the number of music festivals and avenues

that promote independent and non-film music, does

Bollywood continue to remain the preferred option for

aspiring musicians? Society does a little asking around…

Own TuneVH1 India Rules have been platformed to showcase Indian

indie music. The audience has also shown its appreciation and

lauded such shows. Bands and solo artistes have been actively

making full use of the internet and social media to showcase

their work and reach out directly to netizens.

While Bollywood has been the traditional choice for aspiring
