(http://2014.colabwc.co.za/) > still need to work on.  ● Khayelitsha Local People.

Its major role is providing ideas for the possible projects that people with knowledge/skills in technology can work on. The products of the projects would be implemented to the community as solutions.   The rules for users of Socialthon are like following

● 2 weeks to upload the complete version of the proposal (always editable) ● One month from the time to upload proposal to handin the prototype ● Another month from the time to hand in prototype to finalize the project

 (2) Initiation

a. Need of solutions for the prevailing social issues in Khayelitsha, and furthermore South Africa.  b. Increase in demand for the interaction between humanities and cs/engineering from students

in the States universities

(2)a: Analysis of current situations.  I. Situations in Khayelitsha (Source of data: Youth Council)

a. So many social issues exist in Khayelitsha but there is a lack of solutions.  i. not enough people to work on existing social problems  ii. lack of communication between people who have good understanding of the social

problems , and people who have skills to solve the problems.  b. Lack of funding from government /companies to initiate to make changes

II. Situations in countries with hightech.  (source of data: Hack@Brown, Global Hackathon:Seoul , Hacker League , ‘Hackathons are taking the world by storm’ by Dave Fontenot)

a. So many Hackathons are happening per week in everywhere.

Page 2: Socialthon_Innitiative_Explanation

i. For this coming week: (June 7th 13th) 28 hackathons are going to happen. (from: Hacker League)  1. Considering that each hackathon has at least 200 participants, a great

number of programmers/engineers/designers/developers participate hackathons.

 b. Hackathons allow people to create ‘things’ and fix the problems right after. So many good products have been created and impacted companies. (ex: Facebook ‘like’ button, message chat)  c.  Since Hackathon has a great economic value, companies have been shown a lot of interest in them & have been supporting various Hackathons.

 d. Most of hackathons participants are programmers/engineers.  Though the fields that software applications are related are various, (ex: economy, education, healthcare, social innovation), the direct interaction between the programmers and the concentrators in humanity fields is rare.

 d. Hack@Brown organizers are trying to find a way to make concentrators in humanity  areas( such as IR, Psychology, History, English Literature etc)  can also participate in Hackathon.  >WHY? :

the better, the more diverse, the more INFLUENTIAL, the more IMPACTIVE products can be created.

 e. WFUNA ( World Federation of United Nations Associations) signed a MOU  with Global Hackathon:Seoul 2015. Their main request for MOU was to have a section of Social Issues in GHS, and therefore, programmers can build software applications that can solve social problems.

3. Socialthon is the BRIDGE  ● between the humanities and the technology,  ● between the social innovation and technology  ● between the problems and the solutions.

 4. The Economic Benefits from Socialthon As the products from the Hackathons are sponsored by companies, we expect many local/global companies show interest in the products from the projects in Socialthons, and sponsor the projects so that the projects can be actually implemented in the town as solutions.

5. Goals Many Hackathons use our website as a platform to get ideas for the social innovation related projects.  The products from the users’ projects can actually be implemented in the town as solutions
