PREFERENCE POLICYWe urge voters to vote 1 Socialist Alliance, give a second

preerence to the Greens and then preerence Labor beore

the Liberal-National Coalition and other right-wing parties.

Te Socialist Alliance is an anti-capitalist, activist party. We

stand candidates in elections at every level o government,

but unlike other parties we don’t see parliament as the main

vehicle or social change. Election campaigns or us are part

o our year-round work campaigning in workplaces and

WHAT IS SOCIALIST ALLIANCE?

POLITICS TODAY is marked by growing disillusionment with

the politicians who were elected on the slogan o ‘change’ but

have delivered no real change.

Scientists warn that time is running out to shi away rom

the carbon dependency that a prots rst system relies on.

Society has the knowledge the tools and the wealth to live inan ecologically sustainable and socially just and equitable way.

We’ve just witnessed the biggest public bailout o the capi-

talist system in history! rillions o public money has been

shelled out to bail out banks and bankrupt governments.

Tis makes government claims that they “can’t aford” to

arrest climate change or provide ree universal health care

ring hollow.

Te 11 Australians who made the Forbes 1000 world’s richest

list or 2010 have a total net wealth o $25.7 billion—more than

the net wealth o the country’s 800,000 poorest households.BHP Billiton and Rio into pay just 13% tax, while most

workers pay 30% or more in efective tax rate.

Prot share o total income in Australia has increased rom

16.9% to 27.7% since 1974-75 while wage share has decreased

rom 62.7% to 54%. In today’s dollars,

$2.2 trillion dollars has been shied to

prots!

What’s the solution?

We have to organise in

workplaces and com-munities and build a

political alternative to

ght or the change

we need.

n Climate change Bring the energy sector back into pub-

lic hands. Immediate and large-scale public investment

to ensure 100% renewable energy by 2020, as is demon-strated in the Beyond Zero Emissions Zero Carbon Plan.

Nuclear power is not the answer.n Refugees and migrants Honour Australia’s UN reugee

convention obligations. End deportations and mandatory

detention. Close the detention centres, including the ones

at Christmas Island, Maribyrnong and Broadmeadows.

Increase the reugee intake. Let asylum seekers into Aus-

tralia and process claims here – not in the Pacic, Indo-

nesia or East imor. Stop using new migrants as a money

making venture. Give migrant workers on temporary vi-

sas (PVs) the ull rights o permanent residents.n Indigenous rights Negotiate a reaty with Indigenous

people. Repeal the Northern erritory Intervention laws;

abolish welare quarantining. Compensate or stolen wag-

es, property the and stolen children.n Workers’ rights Recognise the right to strike and other

workers’ rights in law. Abolish the ABCC that treats build-

ing workers worse than violent criminals. Abolish

all other Howard-era anti-union laws. Introduce

industrial manslaughter laws.

n Housing Cap rent and mortgage repayments at 20% o

income and introduce rent control laws. Massively boost

public housing stock and social housing programs.n Health Boost unding or preventative health care, men-

tal health and public hospitals. Expand community-based

healthcare networks. Provide ree dental care. End subsi-

dies to private insurers. Expand disability services.n Public transport Public works program to build and

massively expand public transport and rail reight inra-

structure. Build high-speed intercity rail. Make public

transport ree and requent.n Poverty and unemployment Li all welare payments

above the poverty line. Increase the minimum wage.

Make goods more afordable by scrapping the GS. Cre-ate jobs through expanding social inrastructure. Increase

support or carers.n Anti-war Bring troops back rom Aghanistan. End mili-

tary commitment to Iraq. Isolate apartheid Israel. Pay

reparations to Iraq and Aghanistan to assist with rebuild-

ing.

n Democratic rights Scrap ‘anti-terror’ laws. Adopt a

Bill o Rights. Marriage rights or same-sex couples. Full

rights or trans and intersex peoplen Women’s rights Introduce genuine pay equity. Remove

abortion rom the criminal code. Strengthen laws against

sexual harassment. Increase childcare places at afordable

or ree cost to parents. Introduce 12 months’ parental

leave scheme, to be paid or by a levy on employers.n Youth rights Increase the youth allowance. End youth

wages. Boost unding to youth services. Make tertiary

education ree. Te right to vote. Te r ight to vote at 16.n Public ownership Stop privatising government services.

ake back into public ownership those that have already

been privatised.

And how would we pay for this?We would: return the company tax rate to 49%; cut public

subsidies to private education and private health; cut subsi-

dies to the mining industry; slash the deence budget; und

renewable energy by taxing the corporate polluters and

billionaires; abolish negative gearing; tackle tax

evasion by corporate rich; end privatisation and

public-private partnerships.
