The Social Work Department at Edge Hill University offersa range of qualifying social work programmes, practiceeducator programmes as well as training anddevelopment opportunities across the statutory, private,voluntary and independent sectors, maintaining close anddynamic links with a range of partner agencies in socialwork and related professions both in the UK and abroad.The staff team are all qualified and experienced socialworkers with practice and managerial experience in socialwork. Members of the Department are also engaged inresearch and consultancy.The Department delivers on three qualifying social workprogrammes:BA (Hons) Social WorkBSc (Hons) Learning Disabilities Nursing and Social WorkBSc (Hons) Child Nursing and Social Work

Social work as a professioncontinues to face many challengesin the 21st century as it strives topromote wellbeing and enhancewelfare in a socio-political climatedriven by economics andindividualism. The need for socialwork in today’s society is morecrucial than ever and Edge HillUniversity feels it is important toprovide opportunities for everyoneto hear, and be involved in, debates about social work andsociety that affect all of us all on some level. This public lecture series is an opportunity to hear someof the professions’ leading thinkers and writers discusscontemporary, and often contested, areas of social workand related activity.The lectures are free to attend and open to all thoseinterested in social work and related professional activity. Following a successful career insocial work, Neil continues to playa major role in shaping social worktheory and practice, while alsomaking significant contributions toour understanding of a rangeof human relations issues inthe workplace including: equalityand diversity; stress; conflictmanagement; loss, grief andtrauma; and other related matters.Neil has a wealth of experience in helping people dealwith their problems and challenges across the 'peopleprofessions' - that is, members of the helping professionsplus those involved in management, leadership andhuman resources. He is a prolific writer and his texts arevery popular with students of social work and otherprofessions and qualified practitioners.

Since moving to Scotland from theUnited States in 2003, Tim hascontinued his research into, andwriting about, the care of olderpeople in health and social caresettings, supporting carers andgroup work practice as well aswork relating to improving socialwork education. Tim has been the Secretary andVice-President of the Associationfor the Advancement of Social Work with Groups and iscurrently a member of the editorial board of the journalGroupwork and an active member of JUCSWEC. Hispractice experience includes working in older people'sservices in community mental health, community health,court ordered substance abuse treatment, and a geriatrichospital.

David is Emeritus Professor ofSocial Work at the University ofEast Anglia, Norwich. Over manyyears, he has developed researchand writing interests in social worktheory, child abuse and neglect,and adoption. More recently, Davidhas been looking at attachment,empathy, emotional intelligence,and relationship-based approachesto practice.Over the last 25 years, David has written 18 books andseveral hundred book chapters and journal papers. Hismost recent books include Child Abuse and Neglect(2005), The Emotionally Intelligent Social Worker (2008),A Brief Introduction to Social Work Theory (2009),Attachment Across the Lifecourse: a brief introduction(2011), and Empathy: what it is and why it matters (2012).

Mike's career spans both thestatutory and voluntary sectorswith experience of fieldworkservices in mental health andresidential work with children andyoung people. From 2005 to 2007he was seconded to the ScottishGovernment Mental Health Divisionto develop Mental Health OfficerServices across Scotland. In addition to his teaching, Mikehas had close involvement in the North of ScotlandMental Health Officer Training Programme since 1998and has written materials for the Scottish Executive fornational use on implementation of the Adults withIncapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 and the Mental Health(Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 and he hasjoint authorship of Mental Health and Social Work inScotland (Hothersall, Maas-Lowit and Golightly, LearningMatters, 2008).

Jan has worked as a social workpractitioner, trainer and managerin a range of voluntary andstatutory social work settings inboth England and New Zealand.Since 1995, Jan has specialisedin research and writing onchild welfare policy, practice andprofessional education. Findingsfrom her research have informedpolicy and practice developments,both nationally and internationally, including the Republicof Ireland, Ukraine, Australia and South Africa.Jan’s research interests include: the management of childwelfare systems; the challenges of interagency partnerships;developing systems and practice for assessing vulnerablechildren; identifying and working with child neglect andthe role of the front-line manager in social work and caringprofessions.

Brian Taylor is a social worker byprofession and spent 12 years inpractice and first line managementbefore moving into a training andorganisational development rolefor 15 years. He has spent thepast 10 years at the University ofUlster where his research andteaching interests are in decision-making, assessment, risk and thecreation and use of evidence toinform practice. He is the lead for the Decision,Assessment, Risk and Evidence Studies (DARES)research cluster at Ulster and has written and publishedextensively around many of these topics.
