When companies in extractive industries engage
in business activities, they disrupt the social
environment. It is essential that, from the outset,
organizations understand who and what is going
to be disrupted and how the company needs to
mitigate the impact and add value to the social
chain.
Traditionally this is managed using a variety
of standalone or spreadsheet-based systems.
Such environments do not provide visibility into
an organization’s social sustainability profiles,
compromising efficiency and increasing the risk of
community dissatisfaction and litigation.
Our solutionsThe IsoMetrix Social Sustainability solution assists
organizations to manage the social environment
and drive operational performance improvement,
effectively reducing risk and cost.
The software combines the different social
sustainability processes in a dynamic, flexible
and systematic way, thereby providing a single,
comprehensive, integrated management solution.
The easy-to-use and intuitively designed interfaces
facilitate the rapid adoption of a culture of
participation to achieve corporate goals and objectives.
IsoMetrix helps organizations drive compliance with
international management system standards and
guidelines such as ISO 26000, Global Reporting
Initiative (GRI), International Finance Corporation
(IFC) and many more.

Key featuresPlanningPolicies & Procedures
All documentation within the company including policies, procedures,
supporting documents and guidelines, need to be stored within a single
accessible platform.
• The module allows easy accessibility with the document either
uploaded directly to the IsoMetrix server or hyperlinked to a document
management system such as Microsoft SharePoint
• Documentation which needs to be periodically
reviewed can have actions with reminder notifications
set against it
• Search for relevant documents in IsoMetrix using document metadata
such as categorizations
and keywords
Impact Assessment
Social impacts are any change to the social environment, whether adverse or
beneficial, wholly or partly resulting from an organization’s activities.
• All aspects are defined and their subsequent impacts identified
• Risk assessments can be performed in terms of the consequence vs the
likelihood of each impact
• Related impacts can be linked to any record in IsoMetrix giving the organization
oversight of the risk environment
• An holistic view of the consequences of the organization’s activities, processes
and projects is available through the dashboards
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
The aim of this process in IsoMetrix is to measure and monitor the outcomes
stemming from the organization’s social performance.
• Define and manage the organization’s strategic objectives
• Define KPI’s against each strategic objective
• Quantify and assess the KPI according to the desired frequency
• Attach the KPI to any record in IsoMetrix giving the organization a direct
quantitative or qualitative measure of their social performance
Social engagementEngagement Strategy
The strategy of how, where, when and what to engage with material stakeholders.
• Identify the different engagement methods that will be employed
• Identify the target stakeholders for each engagement
• Document key engagement topics
• The dashboards allow analysis of actual engagement versus
planned engagement
Stakeholder Register
A register of all stakeholders and stakeholder entity members who are affected and
impacted by the organization.
• Captures each stakeholder and records key demographics
• Stakeholders can be captured as individuals or as entities
• Stakeholders’ levels of influence/impact and interest in the project can then be
analyzed and a ranking can be assigned
• The selected stakeholder is rated on a number of criteria such as their level of
influence that help define their profile
• They can then be assigned prioritization based on ranking
Stakeholder Interaction
Stakeholder Engagement
This is the process through which an organization engages with the people who may
be affected or impacted by the organization’s decisions or who can influence the
implementation of those decisions.
• Any interaction with stakeholders is captured together with the outcome
of the engagement
• Enables the organization to identify emerging issues, shape their responses, and
continue to drive performance improvements
• Provides a platform for a common approach to all engagements ensuring
continuity in communication
Meeting Manager
This is used for all internal (organization) and external (stakeholders) scheduled
meetings.
• Manages scheduling, attendance, agendas and ensuing actions which may arise
from the meeting
• Meeting minutes are easily accessible
• Helps ensure action items are closed out in the timeframe agreed in the meeting
Stakeholder Outcomes
Obligations & Commitments Management

A good grievance process can enhance outcomes and give people satisfaction that their complaints
have been heard, even if the outcome is less than optimal.
Complaints & Grievance Management
IsoMetrix follows a process driven approach to grievance management with the
following stages typically being addressed:
• Receive and acknowledge
• Classify & assign
• Investigation
• Respond & resolve
• Follow-up & close-out
Socio-economic development The Socio-Economic Development solution enables organizations to design, plan,
implement and monitor all development programs and projects. These can either be
obligatory or voluntary initiatives and are typically focused on the host stakeholders,
business and communities that are directly impacted by the organization’s
operational activities. The development programs are typically classified under
the following topics:
Community Development • Corporate Social Investment (CSI)
• Community upliftment
• Infrastructure development
• Broad based training initiatives
• Poverty eradication
• Sponsorships
Workforce Development • Skills based training initiatives
• Scarce and critical skills development

Land access & resettlementIsoMetrix follows the IFC standards in terms of the land access, resettlement and
compensation processes with the following stages typically being addressed:
Land and Assets • All land and assets impacted by the organization’s operations is typically
identified through survey assessments, the results of which are captured on
IsoMetrix in various land and asset registers where they are classified according to
local and international standards
• IsoMetrix provides a platform for the capture of qualitative and quantitative
social baseline data and monitoring and evaluation surveys
• Because of the agility of the IsoMetrix framework, project specific surveys can be
easily configured
Entitlement and Commitments • Land and asset values are typically calculated through predetermined
government or project rates tables in IsoMetrix
• Entitlements are calculated on the system and commitments are documented
against each stakeholder and stakeholder group
Compensation • Compensation and remediation is managed in the system with a strong focus
on audit trails and approval processes
• Assess compensation values, establish and monitor rates of compensation, the
type and level of compensation and assistance for all types of losses
• Document compensation agreements
• Document and plan compensation payment
• Prepare individual compensation reports for sign-off by the
project-affected persons.
Livelihood Restoration
The presence of the organization and the impact of its operational activities often
has a negative effect on traditional economies like farming or fishing. This is typically
due to the displacement of land and people as well as consequential changes to
the workforce. There are also many positive effects including new employment
opportunities through the organization, industrialization and a broadening of the
local and national economy.

Why IsoMetrix?Agility. What makes IsoMetrix exceptional is that new modules can be created,
or existing ones modified, without a single line of code being written. Because
systems can be configured by people who are not developers, organizations can
significantly reduce the cost and speed of the initial creation of, and enhancements
to, the system. While every customer might have a custom solution, they all share
the same source code.
Integration. The ease with which new modules can be created in IsoMetrix means
that systems that are usually not integrated – islands of information such as
standalone spreadsheets and databases – can be consolidated into a single
system, with centralized administration and security. Integrating systems in this
way drives organizational efficiency with multiple disciplines within GRC on a single
platform.
Visibility. By integrating and centralizing disparate systems, management has
visibility over information such as areas of risk, trends, overdue activities, and
non-conformances. Greater visibility enables better decision-making. The QlikView
dashboards built into IsoMetrix present immediate visibility around areas of
concern such as overdue activities and non-conformances, as well as the analysis
of trends and exceptions.

Strategic Community Investment
IsoMetrix helps organizations assess and understand socio-economic impacts
to project affected stakeholders so they can manage the compensation process
through livelihood restoration.
• Define and plan livelihood restoration assistance based on social baseline
assessments
• Identify vulnerability and manage specific mitigation measures
MonitoringAction manager
The action manager is at the heart of any IsoMetrix system. Actions are assigned
to users in the system ensuring the close-out of all tasks and processes. Actions
manage the process by which employees are held accountable for their responsible
tasks. Actions and their progress are easily visible via the dashboards where they
can be sorted by user and status.
Dashboards
All reports and dashboards in the IsoMetrix application are powered by the QlikView reporting engine.
QlikView is a world leading Business Intelligence tool that allows for the deep analysis of all data in the IsoMetrix application through charts, graphs, tables, reports and dashboards designed and distributed around the organization’s exact requirements.
Geospatial integration
The IsoMetrix GIS Integration allows geospatial references (such as coordinates)
and their corresponding attributes to be pushed from IsoMetrix to the GIS
typically through web-services so they can be rendered and displayed by the GIS
as points on a map. Similarly, geospatial references (such as polygons) and their
corresponding attributes can be pulled from the GIS to IsoMetrix, typically through
web-services, so they can be linked to records in IsoMetrix such as Stakeholders.
Typical GIS mapping requirements include:
• Map identifying settlements, infrastructure, soil composition, natural
vegetation, water sources and land use
• Stakeholders and communities by location
• Map affected assets at household, business and community levels
• Socio-economic surveys by location
• Stakeholder engagements and grievances by location
• Progress in land acquisition can be tracked on the overall map where the
different stages, including survey, verification & sign-off, compensation and
resettlement, are shown in different colors
IsoMetrix ships with a standard ESRI ArcGIS connector. This allows ArcGIS maps to
be integrated and displayed within the IsoMetrix solution.
