The English East India Company or EEIC was formed in 1600 through a charter signed by Queen Elizabeth I. This granted them permission to trade with India. In due course, however, the traders became more demanding and began using exploitative tactics. The Indian handicrafts industry ultimately suffered a setback. We get all this information from well-maintained official records. The British believed that maintaining records helped to ensure better administration. Some Indian writers also began maintaining a record of the economic and social impact of British supremacy in India.

Bernier was a traveller who exchanged goods through the barter system in Europe during the Middle Ages. For example, to obtain silk, he had to exchange furs. However, he was not sure if the fur he was exchanging had the same value as the silk.

Ramesh is a merchant in today’s times and for the goods that he sells, he gets money in return, in the form of coins or bank notes. He makes sure that he gets money equal to the value of the goods he sells.

The British brought about changes in the army and the police force. They not only increased the army, but also converted peasants into soldiers. Although the soldiers were well-trained and were paid a regular salary, they were ill-treated and not allowed to be appointed to high positions.

The cultivation of indigo, a cash crop, did not benefit the Indian peasants. They were forced to grow this crop instead of rice which was their staple food crop. The British profited a great deal from the indigo trade.

The Bhopal gas tragedy led to the loss of thousands of lives. This industrial disaster happened when the highly toxic gas called Methyl Isocyanate (MIC), along with other chemicals, leaked out of the Union Carbide pesticide plant. The main cause of this leak was poor maintenance of the valves and pipelines in the plant.

During the 18th century, Bengal was under repeated attack by external powers and had internal conflicts. The English East India Company (EEIC) took advantage of this and tried to establish itself. Siraj-ud-Daulhah, the ruler of Bengal, understood the company’s intentions and tried to remove the EEIC. Meanwhile the company tried capturing different parts of India. Eventually the British gained control over India. After establishing themselves, they brought about changes in many areas of administration. Land revenue was one of them. This was the introduction of Permanent Settlement where zamindars were made owners of land. Peasants, on the other hand, had no rights.
