Social Media Campaign Shows the Faces of Hunger in Sioux Falls Photo and Video Features Guests, Volunteers who #LoveTheBanquet Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are all great ways to show our followers what’s happening at The Banquet. Throughout February, our daily “Profiles of Love” have featured a different person talking about what The Banquet means to them along with the hashtag #LoveTheBanquet. Get involved by posting your photos of serving at The Banquet on social media using the hashtag and tagging The Banquet. Kmart Closing Affects Project: SOSEvery year, The Banquet would purchase around two thousand brand new backpacks from Sioux Falls Kmart stores at low clearance prices for Project: SOS. We have been blessed to have them rounding up backpacks from other stores in the region! Their closing leaves us needing a new, reliable source for quality, affordable backpacks to distribute to over 6,000 children in need in our community. We will be reaching out to other retailers to fill this gap and encouraging churches and other groups to adopt a grade, but we will need your help more than ever to continue this life-changing special project. Angel of the Month Angels are our last minute, go-to volunteers. They are dedicated to serving on short notice. They may get a few days’ notice or a few hours in the event of inclement weather. Each time an Angel comes in to volunteer they put their name in the running for Angel of the Month. Names are drawn randomly from the basket in the kitchen. So far, Ruth Voss, Megan Pospischil, Jacque McNamera, and Julia Olsen have been selected. If you see them give them a high five or a great big hug from us, they all do amazing work for The Banquet!

The Banquet was awarded $2,500 for receiving the most votes during First National Bank’s Holiday Cheer social media charity event. The top four organizations receiving the most votes on Facebook and Twitter received $2,500. The Banquet is grateful for all of the volunteers and donors who submitted their vote for The Banquet. Sioux Falls SOUP, Hosted by The Bakery, Serves Up Cash for The Banquet’s Christmas Project

The Bakery is a community organization made up of local professionals and entrepreneurs who gather to network and create business relationships in Sioux Falls. Each month four non-profit agencies are asked to present a short program about their mission and needs. Banquet Volunteer Coordinator, Dakotah Jordan, spoke during the Sioux Falls SOUP event about the need for undergarments for Project: Inside Out. Audience members, who paid $5 each to participate, voted for The Banquet to receive the night’s proceeds. We were the lucky winners of $301 cash and a $250 gift card from Thrivent Financial. Thank you to The Bakery and Thrivent Financial for hosting this event and for all of you that cast your votes for The Banquet!

As Mother Nature dumped inches of rain on Sioux Falls, Banquet supporters braved the downpour to sample chili from a dozen local vendors. Thanks to the quick actions of the Cliff Avenue Greenhouse & Garden Center staff, the entire operation was moved indoors before the storm hit.

Torrential Rainstorm Couldn’t Dampen ChiliFest Fans

Thanksgiving is a day we celebrate the blessings we have. That couldn’t have been more true this year at The 12th annual Run for Food. The stars aligned, the weather was great and 600 runners and walkers turned out to support The Banquet. We also had the support of many businesses that sponsored the event to help raise $40,000 to feed hungry families in Sioux Falls.

Events For Children Bring Many SmilesChildren enjoyed the “Heroes & Helpers” event where local law enforcement and Target stores teamed up to provide 40 children with a shopping spree. Each child received a $50 gift card from Target to purchase Christmas gifts. School Bus, Inc. provided transportation for the event.

The youth service group Simon Says Give raised more than $200 for milk, along with several hundred food items to benefit our guests during AARP Night at the Stampede and Kids vs. Cops “food-raisers.” Thank you Simon Says Give for helping The Banquet!

Sioux Falls Morning Optimists Club members organized a Christmas shopping day where children can pick gifts for the adults in their lives. They help the children shop and wrap the gifts. One hundred children were able to pick gifts for their loved ones. Thank you to the Optimists and the Sioux Falls Retired Teachers for providing the gifts for the pint-sized shoppers.

The Banquet Block Party is great for kids of all ages. Guests and neighbors of The Banquet look forward the yearly event. Pumpkin painting, face painting and dance music make the event a huge hit. Thanks to Curt Aasheim of Canton, SD for donating pumpkins and Tim Neuroth for providing music and more.

Dishwasher Malfunction Racks Up $8,000 Cost for Disposable Serving Trays & UtensilsIt’s inconvenient when your dishwasher breaks at home, but imagine serving 500-800 meals per day with no dishwasher--- for 90 days! That’s what happened this fall at The Banquet. A malfunction with the dishwasher led to three months of repairs in the dish room including new sheetrock and tile. While insurance covered all of the repairs except the $1,000 deductible (which was covered by a generous Sioux Falls family) the costs of the disposable trays, cups and silverware were not covered. These items, which were not budgeted for, cost approximately $8,000. Please consider making a contribution toward the cost of these items. Label your donation with “Dishwasher Expenses” so the business office knows what the gift is to cover. Thank you!

Project: Inside Out Provides 1,200 Guests with New Underwear for ChristmasThe Banquet guests appreciate “Unmentionables” for Christmas. New socks, underwear, undershirts and bras are oftentimes too expensive for people who are struggling to put food on their table. Thank you to all the donors who purchased these luxury items for our guests. They and their children appreciate the kindness and having new undergarments makes them feel good about themselves. Thank you for your kindness.

Thrivent Choice Dollars Benefit Your Favorite Charity Thrivent Financial policy holders and investors can direct their Thrivent Choice Dollars to The Banquet. You may go online to direct your funds or call 1-800-847-4836 and say “Thrivent Choice” when prompted. You can choose to direct all of your funds to The Banquet or just a portion. Your deadline to direct your Choice Dollars is March 31, 2017. In the past two years, The Banquet has received $2,400 in Thrivent Choice dollars.

Meat Donations Help Provide Meals Year Round

The Banquet relies on donations of turkey, ham and beef to fulfill our meals throughout the year. The National Wild Turkey Federation provided 32 turkeys for The Banquet’s Thanksgiving Dinner. Hy-Vee and Smithfield Foods (Formerly John Morrell) have donated hundreds of pounds of ham. Carnaval Brazilian Grill donates beef and pork that we grind to use in our main dishes and soups. Thank you for your commitment to helping provide meals to our guests! The Banquet Spends $31,000 on Milk Each Year

Volunteers serve 13 meals each week to families in need. Their generosity of time, talent and treasures are appreciated. Groups are invoiced for the cost of the meal after they have served. This invoice does not include the costs of milk, coffee, and serving supplies. The average cost per meal is $65 to cover milk, coffee and serving supplies. If you’d like to help us with these costs please include the extra payment on your invoice and indicate “Milk and Serving Supplies.” Thank you to the the Freeman Food Pantry for your annual support of The Banquet’s milk fund!
