The main social media platforms that students utilize are Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter.
According to a 2015 Pew Research Center study, it was found that 90 percent of young adults use these social media sites.
In the same study, it was found that there was a 78 percent increase in young adult social media usage from 2005.
An article published by Fortune in January 2016 reported that Snapchat users view more than 7 billion videos through the photo and video sharing app daily.

RISKS OF YOUTH USING SOCIAL MEDIA
Using social media becomes a risk to adolescents more often than most adults realize.
Most risks fall into the following categories: • peer-to-peer• inappropriate content• lack of understanding of online privacy issues • outside influences of third-party advertising groups.

Negative impacts of social media on students
“Social media can interfere with learning if students believe multitasking is possible. Research suggests that people actually are just switching between tasks rather than do several things at the time. Thus, learning is more effective when we just focus on the task of learning and avoid the temptation of distractions.” Jeff Platt, NIACC psychology instructor
Every picture, post, tweet and snap that is published online becomes public and can be viewed by everyone. This can harm a student’s reputation as individuals who personally do not know the student can make judgements based on the image they portray over social media. Future employers also have access to these posts which can influence their decision on who to hire and not hire.

Facebook Options for Classrooms
Pages are public for everyone to see, like, and comment on. There is the capability to block specific Facebook users if there are issues, but in general it is a very open platform. You create the page through your personal account, but that doesn’t mean followers of your page can see your personal posts.
Groups can be made private or public. You can even make them secret so that you can target invitations just to the parents in your classroom. You should not send personal friend requests when setting up groups. There is a way to invite them to your page with a link by copying it into an e-mail.

Twitter for the Classroom
Twiducate is a social media platform for schools and classrooms that educators can control who has access to see and post information. Only teachers and students may view classroom posts, thus creating a private network for users and a safer online learning environment. This is a way to help students understand how to practice safe digital citizenship.

What Else Can Twitter Do?
Book Studies….for educators, parents and studentsUse the actual TWITTER platform in either a “short” study or “long” study format
The process is simple…..
Each moderator (1 or more dividing the chapters up) pushes out a Question that includes Q1 (or current number) and the “group hashtag”.
Group hashtags are essential since that is what connects all of the Questions and Answers so everyone can see everyone else. Choose something easy to remember and not in use.
When participants see the Question posted on their twitter account they answer with the A1 (or current number) and include the hashtag.

How Can Anyone Keep Up With All The TWEETS????
Two of my favorite ways are---
Google Sheets Add-ON
See all the Tweets that match a specific #
Schedule your Tweets
Use more than one account
Collect all the Tweets for a specific # in one Google Sheet
The add-on will automatically create a new sheet when it reaches 500 Tweets
Can send each line to a Google Doc with another Add-on
