have been rid-ing motorcy-cles of one type or an-other for a lot of years. There have been years where getting

out was really tough. It just seemed to rain all the time or the weather just did-n’t seem to cooperate. This is the odd-est year yet where we can’t get out and ride because of a virus. If you are like me, you have spent a lot of time with a can of wax in one hand and a rag in the other.

On the GWRRA front, there was an online Zoom meeting last week. The

meeting was conducted by District Direc-tors Glenn and Joy and ACD Clyde. From the west, Johnny from G2 and Dale from M2 as well as myself were involved in the call.

Glenn shared with us that Wings over the Smokies is still on and they are ex-pecting a large attendance this year. lect their tickets and turn them back in. He did announce that, as of the present moment, Wing Ding in July is still on. Glenn feels that GWRRA will be back stronger than ever once this current crisis passes.

I hope that everyone has had an opportunity to read your Wing World magazine. Under the Mem-oriam section on page 79, Johnny Johnson and Robin Ferguson were recognized. This was a nice nota-tion for two of our former officers.

Wing World on pages 50-51 has a nice write up about WOS last year complete with lots of pictures.

I recently sent out an email stating that I wanted to have our first NC-I gathering outside. Many of us are in the high risk group and we cer-tainly do not want anyone to take any unnecessary chances with your health. So the plan is as follows.

First the governor needs to release the 10 person limit on gatherings. It looks like this will happen in time for our May gathering which is May 23.

I received a call today from Dean and Susan. Dean said that they have a shelter house that is covered and will seat 50-60 people. Better yet, the cost is free.

I will let everyone know a couple of weeks before the meeting if it is on or not. If yes, then we will need a count as to how many to expect.

On the day of the meeting, Phil or

Charles will announce a depar-ture location and time. Direc-tions will be provided for those who would like to go on their own.

We will depart and ride over to Marion to the meeting location as a group. Once there, coffee and donuts will be provided.

We will have our meeting as usual. Yes I will have jokes ready. LOL There will be plenty of room for social distancing and I encourage the wearing masks if you so choose.

There will be ride follow-ing the meeting. We are asking everyone to bring a sack lunch since we will be stopping somewhere on the ride to enjoy a picnic. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, then we will still go, but in cars. I really hope that we can do this because Di-anne and I really miss seeing everyone.

We are strong and to-gether we will get through this. If you need anything that the chapter can help you out with, please give us a call. (828) 273-5398

H i all. We would just like to say Stay Safe and

Be Well.

Parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway are still closed off as well as all the parks and public facilities. Gra-ham County has re-moved the barricades to several of their

roads including the Dragon. They ask that you should keep motoring thru and stop for gas only if needed. The 254661 store at the Dragon is open and is doing take out only food.

We are slowly but surely working on chapter rides and when the current situation opens up we will GRADUALLY get back to our group rides and so-

cializing but until then enjoy a solitude or two up ride. Re-member social dis-tancing and take your trash with you when you leave.

Here are a couple of links about closures on the Parkway:

S afety in numbers is

a term we’re all familiar with. Well most of us if you’ve been around the block time or two.

Safety in numbers is the hypothesis that activities performed with a group are

likely to be safer than those performed individually. Jogging, walking, bicycling and motorcycling are all good examples of activities that benefit from safety in numbers. Statistics have proven this. In these strange, unprecedented times I must also point out that a global pandemic may provide an exception to these statistics.

Putting aside the global pan-demic, doing things in a group setting are generally much more enjoyable as well as being safer. This includes motorcy-cling among other things al-ready mentioned, but what are some of the reasons for an in-crease in safety. I bet you’re thinking about them as you read this, we’ll explore some of the benefits of group riding. Yes, there are some negatives to group riding too, but we’ll save that for another article.

Sharing ride experiences, good and bad, with friends in the group can be fun as well as educational. This might include the details about the hairpin turn or decreasing radius curve that caught you by surprise. Talking about these things with experienced riders often leads to helpful tips that can improve your riding skills.

For example: Looking into the curve as far as you can see is a good trick to help you pick the perfect line and allow a smooth transition through the curve. Re-member where you heard that curve negotiation ride technique? Most likely a more experienced friend you

were riding with. Riding a

motorcycle is very rewarding

and having friends with you just en-

hances the experience.

Motorcycle groups are much more conspicuous than a solo rider. The com-bined headlights coming down the road makes for a large footprint that is pretty difficult to miss. This is an obvious safety benefit that shouldn’t be disre-garded. Often times other motorists yield to groups of motorcycles to allow us through intersections as one group. I suspect most of us would do this if we noticed a group of riders; I know I do.

I know you’re already thinking about the benefits of group riding should there be an accident. Where do we start, as there so many benefits?

Traffic control surrounding an accident is a huge benefit of group riding and not too long ago our chapter put this to the test. Riders and co-riders in our group were able to respond to a rider laying in the roadway. Our group was able to respond quickly with ample traffic control and render first aid. I have no

But officer, I didn’t see the motorcycle!

doubt that we made the situation better for everyone involved.

How about the combined knowledge of the group when a first aid response is required? CPR can be a physically exhausting experience and having more qualified people to help perform CPR would be a great benefit. Those of you that have had the first aid training know what I’m talking about. Additionally, the combined supplies available from many first aid kits may provide additional benefit to the injured.

What if the accident is minor enough that you can ride away from it? Getting your motorcycle back to the pavement with the rubber side down would be nearly impos-sible if you were alone.

I’m sure you’ve thought of some reasons I have-n’t mentioned, but without a doubt safety in numbers is never truer than if there is an accident.

In a strange twist of the phrase, safety in num-bers may also apply to wheels. Generally four wheels are safer than three wheels and three wheels are safer than two wheels. There are so many more opportunities for a mishap when you’re on two wheels. Sometimes minor, like falling over in a parking lot or some other spot such as a stop sign. Most of those mishaps don’t cause serious injury, which is a good thing because I think those fallovers are way more common (and way more em-barrassing) than people admit.

Sometimes a two wheeler incident can be more seri-ous such as a high side or low side crash. Most of those are much more serious. Motorcycling is very rewarding, but no reasonable person can deny the risk riding a motorcycle presents.

Can we reduce the risk? Maybe, by choosing a three wheeled alternative. Fallovers, tipovers and slipping

on loose road debris will almost be eliminated. This alone could be a compelling reason to switch to three wheels.

Going from two to three wheels does require sacrifice as you no longer get the leaning feeling that a two wheeled motorcycle provides. Depending of your thrill level expectations this may or may not be an issue.

There was a time when that leaning thrill was the most important aspect of riding a motorcycle for me. So much so that most years that we lived in Florida an annual trip to the mountains was required so I could get my thrill from the curves. Many of you know exactly what I’m talking about.

As they say, time marches on and that thrill is not as important as it once was. Going with three wheels may exclude you from leaning with the curve, but the fun factor in curves still exists. Different, but still fun.

The amount of safety pro-vided by the third wheel is yet to be fully realized, but I’m certain it is safer. Those of you that have already switched to three wheels are probably fully aware of the safety bene-fits. Our choice for a three wheeler is the Polaris

Slingshot. The Slingshot’s side-by-side seating adds to the experience as conversing with your co-rider is much easier. Several other options are available and I encourage you to explore what is available if you are considering a three wheeled motorcycle.

I’ve only covered a few of the safety benefits of group riding and I’m sure there are many more. So the next time you’re planning a ride maybe consider calling, emailing or texting some friends and see if they’re interested in joining you. I’m willing to gamble and say you’ll get a few to join you. Your fun filled day of riding will then benefit from safety in numbers.
