Activity 16 Worker Safety Use this information to create a hand-drawn or computer created flyer about safety in this workplace It is an office. There are 10 desks side by side. Each desk has a computer. Each computer is linked to the others to print documents. The printer is at the end of the room near the window. To get to the printer you walk past the back of the computers. They all have cords and cables and powerboards coming out of them and lying on the floor. It is a narrow squeeze if two people have to pass each other. Windows printer walkway to printer

What could you suggest the office do to improve the set up? Draw up a notice to change the arrangements or warn people about the dangers of tripping.

Activity 55 Lists & Reports Each organisation needs to prepare ‘lists of things to do’ and ‘reports on what was done’.

The Piney Hills Soccer Club needed to meet every six months and have just the managers from each team. They decided to meet on the first Tuesday of the month at the soccer club at 5.30pm. Their first meeting was held on the 9th January 2002 and 6 of the 8 managers turned up. At that meeting Jerry Boswell was named Chairman, Noni Marshall was to be treasurer and Sharlene Simpson to be Secretary. Fiona Serty, Mark Longsly, Ned Crums, Wendel Sopson and Jim Brown became committee members so they could vote. They decided that the missing two – Jenny Stevens and Reg Williams – could be made committee members at the next meeting on the 10th February 2002. Jim Brown moved the acceptances and Mark seconded them. Once all the positions were organised there was a general discussion about training times for the different teams and the payment of fees to the club. Wendell suggested that he write up a table that would list all the teams and what to pay and when training was and get it to the managers. Mark also wanted to acknowledge the work done on the grounds last year by the club and that it would be great to do that again and make it a fund-raising day too. Fiona asked that a regular roster be organised for the canteen on Home days that included both parents not just the mums. Jerry said he would write a memo to be given to each manager to pass on to the parents about that. He said he would have it ready for the next meeting. The meeting closed at 7pm.

Activity 80 News on Change Compare & Contrast views on technology

Staff News All staff must gain the minimum Certificate I Information Technology before the end of semester this year. All staff need to be able to provide support in this technology at this minimum level as 100% of assignments and communication in this subject area will be electronic!

What is the view of technology behind the writing of this notice?

Town Crier The local library has been able to install 5 up-to-date computers with Internet and email access for the community use. The U3A organisation that provides short courses for the over-60 group are insisting on all members signing up to learn how to use these facilities.

What is the view of technology behind the writing of this article?

Herald It is both a curse and a blessing! Computer technology makes our lives run efficiently and quickly in so many ways that often we don’t even know it is there. But… can it really be an educational revolution? Will people especially children really learn from a machine? Is it not just a tool? Does it not distance us from each other?

Activity 102 If That Doesn’t Work, Try… Steve is delivering a ‘new equipment’ training session to employees from two different departments of the Temy Corporation. One department has the delivery drivers who are mostly 30-50 years old and all male; the other department is administration with an all female staff who range in age from 16 to 27. He has to introduce the use of the electronic log-in time sheets to both sections. The drivers have to key in their personal PIN, record their mileage and record their fuel at the start of the day. As they do their rounds they then tick off their deliveries as they are completed and they record the mileage at each delivery on the electronic record sheet. The electronic monitor will automatically record the time the product was delivered and the mileage to get to the delivery point. This information is relayed automatically to the administration area and comes up in an Excel screen showing which drivers have done which deliveries, and the time taken to complete both the delivery and drive between delivery points. This means that the time spent driving between delivery points can be calculated with the kilometres logged and the fuel costs can be calculated. The administration staff have to interpret the information on the sheet to the costs of fuel allocated per driver to see whether the company is making a loss.

While the administration staff have all been through a least a Certificate II in Administration and understand how the system works they have no practical knowledge! On the other hand, the drivers know how and why the system works but are not comfortable with why they have to do this ‘techno-babble” to tell everyone else about it!
