President’s MessageMatthew Matava, MD

Dear Colleagues,

Mark your calendar now for the 2018 Annual Meeting at The Breakersin Palm Beach, FL July 11-14. Founded in 1896, and reopened in 1926after a fire destroyed the original building, this historic resort wasmodeled after the magnificent Villa Medici in Rome. Even today, TheBreakers would be considered an ambitious effort considering the 75artisans brought in from Italy to assist in the 1926 renovation.

Located within walking distance of the Atlantic Ocean and an onsite golf course, TheBreakers is always a ‘fan favorite’ for attendees and their families. My partner atWashington University, Ryan Nunley, MD, will be our Program Chair. He willundoubtedly create an academic program that should raise the bar for our AnnualMeeting.

Richard Gelberman, MD has accepted the honor of being the 2018 DistinguishedSouthern Orthopedist. Having worked under Dr. Gelberman for 20 years, I can stateunequivocally that no one in orthopaedic surgery is more deserving of this honor. Touse a familiar sports vernacular, he is a true ‘triple threat’ excelling as an educator, researcher, and clinician. I cannot imagine many orthopedic surgeons in this county, andabroad, who have not been affected by his contributions to our specialty.

I am also honored that Hal Kushner, MD has agreed to be our Presidential GuestSpeaker. An ophthalmologist by training, Dr. Kushner has a unique story regarding hisexperiences as a young physician who was a POW in the Vietnam War where he washeld captive and tortured for over five years. The word “harrowing” does not do justicewhen describing his experiences. His story is a valuable reminder to future generations,so they know the cost of the liberty and freedom they enjoy today. He is one of severalAmericans who spoke about their brutal experience in the 10-part Ken Burns and LynnNovick epic, The Vietnam War, which aired on PBS this past fall. I guarantee you will notwant to miss his presentation.

My wife, Michelle, along with Stacy Wald and our management team from Data TracePublishing Company, are actively creating an exciting list of activities for the spouseseach morning if swimming, walking on the beach, golf, and tennis aren’t enough. Thepopular breakfast gatherings will also be back, so you can rest assured that your familywill be well cared for while you are at the meeting. A Welcome Reception, ExhibitorReception, and Gala Dinner will once again be held during the evenings to put a relaxingclosure to each day’s events. What could be better than to cap off your summer with aneducationally rewarding meeting in a family-friendly environment all within the confinesof one of America’s top resorts.

Thank you for all of your support of the SOA over the past 35 years. This thanks goes tothe many members who are the lifeblood of our society, as well as to our corporatepartners whose support is vital to the quality of our Annual Meeting. The SOA wouldnot be what it is without the contributions of so many dedicated and talented people.

So, remember to mark your calendars for July 11-14, 2018. We look forward to seeingyou in Palm Beach!

Sincerely,

Matthew MatavaMatthew Matava MDPresident, Southern Orthopaedic Association
