So this is Key Stage 4….
The more parents are engaged in the education of their children, the more likely their children are to succeed in the education
system. School improvement and school effectiveness research consistently shows that parental engagement is one of the key
factors in securing higher student achievement. The scale of the impact is evident across all social classes and all ethnic groups.

Mr Kennedy-Fowler Beyond GCSE
Sixth Form Requirement 2020 (These are reviewed every few years, so are subject to amendment)
Minimum 2 x 7 grades & 3 x 6 grades at GCSE
At least grade 5 in Mathematics and English at GCSE.
Individual subjects then also have their own entry criteria:
- Maths grade 7+
- Further Maths grade 8+
- Chemistry grade 7+ (in either GCSE Chemistry or Combined Sci)
Three sciences - we strongly recommend a minimum of grade 7 in two sciences and
grade 7 in Maths.
New subjects such as Economics, Politics, Psychology or Sociology, you must have
achieved a grade 6 in a related subject. For example, to study Psychology, a
Humanities subject at GCSE is preferred and preferably a grade 6 in English
Language.
Most degree courses have slightly different entry requirements at
each university – often a mix of GCSE and A Level grades
How do GCSE results influence university places?

For example PSYCHOLOGY BSc:
University of Cardiff – GCSE Grade 5 in English Language and Maths
University of Durham - GCSE Grade 5 in Maths
University of Lancaster – GCSE Grade 6/7 in Maths
University of Leeds – GCSE Maths and a Science Grade 5 and English Language Grade 4

What is a proactive learner?
Attitude to Learning Grade 1
Growth Mindset
Growth mindset: the most important
thing students can learn is how to be
an INDEPENDENT LEARNER.
Email sent our just before ½ term –
compilation of subject contributions:
“The kind of things which would
receive a grade 1 for Attitude to
Learning.”
Attitude to Learning Grade 1
Grade 1:
“Positive and proactive attitude to
all aspects of learning.”
Grade 2:
“Positive attitude to learning.”
Grade 3:
“… Immediate improvement
needed.” Grade 4 is very rare.
What might contribute to Attitude to
Learning Grade 1?
Homework always of high quality
Make serious attempt at
challenge/bonus/extension
tasks
Wider research on topics studied
Take part in subject-related
initiatives (Maths Challenge/132
Blog/UG music ensemble)
Make notes without being told
What might contribute to
Attitude to Learning Grade 1?
Study/quote from own notes
Explore textbooks/subject
sites: use these for reference
Make valuable contributions to
lessons
Ask for more challenging
work
Attitude to Learning Grade 1
Grades are subjective
Student unhappy with grade?
Growth mindset says: “What
next?”
No grade 1s? Try to achieve
grade 1 in favourite subject.
Several grade 1s? Try to maintain
these/achieve more grade 1s.
KNOW WHEN TO SWITCH OFF.
What makes a Proactive Parent….?
Much of what you already do….
Discuss their work with them –
look for positives
Encourage them to talk to their
teachers – bring them to parents
evenings
Contact school if there is an issue
What makes a Proactive Parent….?
Set the scene for revision
Provide a place for them to
revise
Help them to avoid
distractions – offer to look
after their phones
Know when they have exams
What makes a Proactive Parent….?
Talk to your child – encourage
them to find “slots” for doing
their work.
Make them feel good about their
hard work and effort – don’t ask
for comparisons with friends or
siblings!
What makes a Proactive Parent….?
Encourage them to
embrace the challenge
and to strive to achieve
their very best – it will
be worth it in the end.
