newest spa in Salem, Butterfl y

Spa Massage and Yoga, to get

their taxed neck knots kneaded

out. Sheri Bamber opened the

business in May.

This direction is a new onefor Bamber, who is in her

mid-40s. Shes owned her

own business before, but it

existed so that she could have

fl exibil ity in picking up her two

kids and two stepkids after

school.

Chelmac, a cleaning service,

was even named for the four

children (Chelsea, Mackenzie,

Michael, and Colleen.)

Last spring, her ex-husbandMike Bamber moved to

Richmond to be near their 25-

year-old daughter Mackenzie,

a student at Virginia

Commonwealth University.

When their 19-year-olddaughter Chelsea decided she

wanted to be in Richmond, too,

it left Bamber with an early

empty nest.

She sold her 3,000-square-

foot house and moved into

a cottage on Bent Mountain.

Organic gardening, fl owers, and

building a life on the mountain

was good for her, but she still

needed another change.

I was thinking Ive got todo something different Im

going crazy, she said.

I didnt know what it was

like to try to focus on myself.

A friend of hers, Carolan

Deacon, suggested going to

an open house at Blue Ridge

School of Massage and Yoga,

and Bamber said she signed up

soon after attending it.

I was blown away by

the fi rst month of school,said Bamber. The anatomy,

kinesiology, and all of the

intense studying amazed

her, but she really began to

appreciate what the yoga

session before each class andmassage during class was

doing for her body.

Most of the spas that are

around that offer massage are

more of a pampering aspect,

she said. What most people

dont realize is the health

aspect.

During the last part of her

schooling, she had to come up

with a business model.

As she was sitting on herproperty and thinking about

how her new career path was

transforming her, much like

a caterpillar changes into a

butterfl y, poof!

A bunch of butterfl ies all

fl ew from a branch at the same

time. It cemented the name

and inspired her to stick with

her business model.

As part of her grand opening

celebration, she is offering $10off any massage fthrough the

month of August.

She specializes in deep

tissue massage, reiki, and

offers private yoga lessons.
