PIONEER GUN CLUB – NOVEMBER 2014

Sight-In Days

Public Sight-In days will be upon us in November, the 8th and 9th to be

precise. Flyers will be available soon at both ranges and please take some

and hand them out, post them at businesses (make sure they let you) and tell

your friends. This is for one weekend only and we help the public hunter get

their rifles on target so they place their shots accurately. There is a flyer

with this newsletter and available on the web site for you to print out if you

cannot make it to the range to pick some up.

Want to help out your club and help a hunter get sighted in? It’s easy, we run

two days and need about 8 to 12 coaches (helpers) each day. You can help for 4 hours or 8 hours or both days. Its

fun and we feed you for free. During any down time the talk around the table can get interesting when someone starts

talking about a favorite rifle or a favorite load or an unusual rifle they just helped sight in. It is a great way to make a

new friend, renew friendships and have a good time. Give me a call and let me know. All you need to bring is a

front rifle rest and a spotting scope and if you don’t have one I can loan you one. Call me, Ed Camp at 816-333-7559

and let me know.

PPC/Bullseye Building: Still some work to be done. Thanks to Terry Wright the heating and air conditioning units are up and running. Thanks Terry.

Dues Increase: The club members present at the October meeting voted to raise the club dues to $200.00 starting in 2015. Half of the increase will go to improving or building a new indoor range and the other half will be dedicated to safety—primarily installing baffles on the pistol ranges. We are working of getting set up so you can pay your dues on your computer or phone. We have his some snags in getting this done. If

you have any knowledge on how to do this contact Connie Baum or Jack Smart.

Monday Trap Shooting: The Monday evening trap shoot officially ended on October 26th. However, there will be shooting any time the weather is nice and people who want to shoot. Bob Calton will send out an email to all shooters when the weather is projected to be nice. When there are several shooters who respond that they want to shoot Bob will then send out another email telling everyone that the shoot will take place. If you are interested in shooting on Mondays be sure to get on Bob’s email list.

October Meeting: Thanks to Ron DeJarnette for the use of his hanger for the October meeting.

Damage to the Range: In the past 2 weeks or so there has been a lot of damage to several ranges by inconsiderate shooters. (1) The 2x4 over the targets on the left side of Range 2 was deliberately shot in too. (2) Someone shot 10 slugs on the patterning board at the shotgun range and (3) the third baffle on range 2 took multiple hits which penetrated the metal. None of these were accidents! While there is little expense to the club to replace the 2x4 it does take someone's time and effort. The slugs did little damage to the pattering board but club rules do not allow slugs to be shot on this range. Slugs should only be used on the rifle ranges. Continued shooting of slugs on the patterning board will eventually damage it and require it’s replacement. The damage to the metal baffle was very extensive and may require the baffle to be taken down and repaired. This will mean the range will be closed down until repairs can be made and will cost a lot of money. This is your range and these people are costing you money that does not need to be spent in this way. If you are the idiot that is doing this stop immediately and hope we do not find out who you are. If you know who these people are turn them in to the eboard and they will be given the chance to shoot elsewhere. They are not mature enough to have a firearm and be members of this club.

Additional Damage: Sunday October 26th between the 5:51pm and 6:30 pm someone damaged the electronic gate. The gate was off the hinges and the motor shaft was broken in too. Bob Hudson, George Monahan and Rick Lance were able to combine this motor with the broken one we had from the last time the gate was run into and get the gate working again. Thanks guys. Looking at the cameras there were several cars leaving the range during this time but most did not stop to sign out. They must have come in earlier in the day because they also did not use their cards to come into the range. Everyone who had signed in on that day also signed out so these people did neither. This will cost the club in excess of $900.00 to replace the motor. Because of all of this destruction anyone found shooting on the range without signing in will be asked to leave immediately. Anyone refusing to leave will have to appear before the eboard at the next meeting and will have their gate card turned off until then.

Sight in Days: Sight in days will be November 8th and 9th. The rifle ranges will be closed on both of these days from 7:00 am until approximately 5:30 pm. If you come out to shoot on the rifle ranges on those days expect to pay the fee. As usual, Ed Camp can use some help on each day. If you can help with this project please contact t Ed. Your lunch is free if you help.

Women On Target CCW Class: The women who attended the WOT event were given an opportunity to take a CCW class for free. There were 13 ladies who attend and passed the class. Thanks to Cecil DeJarnette, Bob Hudson, Bob Harris, Don Auffert and Mike Baum for their help on the firing line. They did an excellent job of keeping everyone safe and giving the ladies good instruction to improve their shooting. Some also provided the ladies handguns to use. Thanks guys, the class could not have been held without you. The ladies made a nice donation to the club for hosting the class.

Defensive Pistol Class: The class will be held on November 15th at McBride. Cost is $100.00. If you have a CCW permit or intend to get one and want to know more about defensive pistol shooting contact Jack Smart to enroll. 816-478-7033, [email protected].

First I must apologize for failing to file a Range Report over the

past several months. Just get tired of always complaining.

SO! First things first: COMPLAINING.

Take a look at the shotgun pattern board on the shotgun range. I

don’t think there is one single member of Pioneer Gun Club that

does NOT know you DO NOT shoot slugs on the pattern board, or

anywhere else on the shotgun range for that matter. There is

absolutely NO EXCUSE for this kind of stupidity. Club rules clearly state only lead shot of 7 1/2 or smaller (8 – 9 etc.)

may be used on the pattern board. If this damage was not done as a result of profound stupidity, then it MUST be just

plain old vandalism. Which ever it is, this person needs psychiatric help.

Baffle shooting. Range #2, last baffle in front of 2nd bench from range line utility shed. (Jack’s Shack.) I don’t know

when the individual did this intentional vandalism to our range, I just learned of it 16-Oct-14. The best I could count on

a computer enlargement of the attached photo was OVER 50 bullet hits on the metal baffle. There is nothing I can say

to this. Not one word of my description of the person doing this sort of thing is printable on these pages or even spoken

among decent people.

Thank you for your toleration. Wishing all the best for Thanksgiving. Appreciate your family every minute you can, it

all ends so awfully soon.

If this property is NOT claimed by 01-Jan-15 it will be

declared ‘homeless’ and being the most humanitarian

cheap skate in the club, IT BECOMES MINE!

If it is yours please claim it. I pick up property such as

this for safe keeping. I do not really want or need it.

I found a box of targets along the road a couple of month's ago brought them into the range It was starting to sprinkle If they are yours please let me know Bob Hudson

The good news is that the new building at McBride is up and running. The Jonnie on

the spot is gone the indoor plumbing works. We still have a few things to finish

(Staining the Cabinets) I think someone has volunteered. If you can help, please let us

know.

Now for some old business. We had a work day 2 months ago and got quite a bit of

work done. I would like to thank the following people who came out and helped,

Richard Long, Carl Robertson, Joe Tapko, Rick Bleu, Gary Stanfield, Wilber Hummel,

Tom Berry, Allen Kerr, George Morash, James Smouts, Jason Payne, Michael

Richeson, Bill McDonald II, and John Wires.

Whenever you see Rick Lance, pat him on the back and say thanks. Look how good the

berms look! He did that with his new and improved BERMINATOR mower. He does a lot of work on Pioneer property

with his MacGyver toys, moving roads, berms, growing berms taller. Heck, you never know what he is up to!

I would like to thank John Downs for his mowing at McBride and Sam Cox for mowing at the Brickyard.

Before I sat down to type this article, I had a million things to say. Now I cannot think of one.

Just a note, a little out of my job description, but after watching the video of range 2 I have to say something.

When checking your rifle or pistol to see if it is on target since you last shot it, start on the 25 yard line not the 100 yard.

One or two shots at the 25 yard line will let you know if you need to start there before you go to the 100 yard line. Our

baffles will last longer and not look like we cannot shoot.

Many of our members start on the 100 yard line only to have to go to the 25 yard line to see where they are

shooting. Lake Lotawana and many other ranges know how much one bullet costs. Let me think of some others: The

Brickyard, The 500 yard line at McBride. Will we ever learn?

Bob at the Pioneer garden club. The price of one bullet!

I am starting my Christmas wish list early this year of things that I think we need.

1) A bigger mower / tractor for the Brickyard.

2) A 10 0r 12- inch table saw for McBride

3) A 12- inch power miter saw for McBride

4) A golf cart for McBride. Several golf carts, actually.

Jobs that need to be done:

Cover all the wood baffles to stop the weathering. (Contracted out)

Chalk holes in baffles at McBride

Paint outside of Brickyard Range.

Repair roof of Barn

Remove all old fences that are not being used at McBride

Finish cutting trees on berms at McBride.

Making the trailer frame into a bridge

Replace kitchen sink faucet at McBride. ( Done)

Build a Bathroom at the Brickyard.

.22 Games & Competition The 22 Games & Competition at the Brickyard Range will start Friday

November 7th and run through March 20th every Friday except the fourth

Friday of each month, the Ladies have the range that night. See the course of

fire description below. We are shooting different types of paper targets for

score. There will be a set of targets for rifle and pistol. One can shoot rifle,

pistol or both. Open to the public, you do not have to be a PGC member to

participate.

The entry fee will be $5.00 for each gun. Payout will be 1st in class $7.00, 2nd

in class $4.00 & 3rd in class $2.00, subject to participation. Classes may be

combined for weekly awards.

Any safe 22 rifle and / or pistol, any sight (excluding lasers) – most

competitors use a magazine fed semi-auto with at least a (9-X) scopes for the

rifle and a magazine fed semi-auto with low power scopes or red dots for the pistols. However, a single shot with iron

sights will work.

All competitors will be classified, their first night of competition. Everyone will shoot heads up the opening night; your

second competition classification will be based on your first nights scores. Your third night of competition classification

will be the combination of your two previous scores. After you have shot three (3) scores your classification will be

permanent. Shoot out of your class two times in a row and you will go up one class. Shoot below your class three times

in a row you will go down one class.

New competitors are encouraged to participate; young competitors who may not be able to hold a rifle offhand are

encouraged to shoot with the aid of a shooting stick and an adult helper. With the exception of the young competitors,

no artificial support of any kind will be allowed.

A class will be at least three competitors; classes will be combined upward until there is a class.

Classes with 3 competitors will have one payout. Classes with 4 competitors will have 1st & 2nd place payouts. Classes

with 5 competitors will have 1st, 2nd & 3rd place payouts.

If we have at least 3 Junior Shooters in the same class, they will be put in their own class for awards.

Our goal for these competitions is a safe and fun competition to help each competitor to improve their marksmanship in

a safe and friendly environment. Regardless of score we want it to be an enjoyable and educational experience for all

the participants.

14 PIONEER GUN CLUB – NOVEMBER 2014

To all shooters interested in High Power shooting.

We held our final match of the season on 25 October

2014. We had 11 shooters competing in 18

matches. There were 10 adults and 1 junior. 11 shooters

finished the first match and 7 competed in the second

match.

The weather was not a factor this time, in fact it was a

totally perfect day for a match, couldn't have been

better. The scores are getting better every match, which

makes it easier on me when I'm checking all the scores.

The results of the matches are:

Garand:

1. Richard Windsor, 269-1X, 259-3X.

2. Allan Windsor, 258-3X.

3. Scott Yerganian, 256-5X, 218-2X.

Bolt Gun:

1. George Monahan, 284-5X, 03-A3.

2. Allan Ensor, 268-5X.

Service Rifle:

1. Devin Schwindt, (a Junior) 280-6X.

2. Will Sisson, 280-5X.

3. George Monahan, 277-10X.

M1 Carbine:

1. Steve Tuttle, 244-4X, 243-2X.

2. Andy Cox, 238-0X, 218-1X.

Hunting Rifle:

1. Frank Harles, 276-12X, (AR with scope).

2. Devin Schwindt, 269-5X.

3. Darcey Schwindt, 148-0X.

This was the last match of the season, we will compute all the scores to determine the winners in each class for the

season. Then we will give out awards, if everything works out right, at the next general membership meeting on 13

November. Hopefully, all the winning competitors will be able to attend, and receive their awards for the efforts they

put into shooting this season. We hope to see all of you then.

On another subject, I have decided to retire from the position of Director of Highpower, effective the end of the

year. George Monahan has agreed to temporarily take it over until a permanent Director volunteers or is

appointed. He will be actively trying to find someone to fill that position throughout next season. If you don't want

to see Highpower die in this club, please take a turn at running it, George will help you get up to speed with all that is

involved.

I want to thank all the competitors who attended our matches, without you, there wouldn't be any matches.

Al Davies, Director of Highpower.

Smallbore Silhouette – October Match

Seven “brave” shooters “challenged” the perfect weather (60+ degrees, Zero

wind) and killed many a pesky steel animal threatening to over run the 100

yard range.

Clint Munzlinger was First AAA with a combined score of 66. Adam Bell

was only 1 target ahead of Ken Keifer, 57 to 56. First A class shooter was

Rhon Ledbetter with a score of 42. Rhon will soon be shooting AA class

with a couple of more scores like that. Steve Tuttle was next with a 31.

Ron Cox was first B class with a score of 29. Ron was using a new rifle and

it looks like a winner. We were also joined by a new to Silhouette shooter,

Diedre Brodersen. We hope she will be back next year on a regular basis.

If it seems like Clint is the top score each month, there may be a reason.

Clint not only won his class (AAA) at the Smallbore Silhouette Nationals (July - Whittington Center, Raton, NM) in

the Standard rifle and was 2nd for the Hunter Rifle, but he is also the OVERALL Missouri State Champion for both

Standard and Hunter rifle (October - Paris, MO). Although he is not a PGC member he has actively participated in all

the matches this year (except July). Needless to say, he is hard to beat. Congratulations Clint.

And now a shameless plug for the Friday night .22 Games: The games are a great way to practice for Silhouette

shooting. We shoot .22 rifles and/or pistols at 25 yards, and they can all be shot from the standing position. This is a

chance to develop and refine your Silhouette Offhand position. The games begin Nov. 7th, sight-in at beginning at 5

pm, the match starts at 6:00. Non-club members are welcome.

Smallbore Silhouette will resume in April 2015. Hope to see you then.

PIONEER GUN CLUB – NOVEMBER 2014

A very special thank you to PGC member Jeff Richards. His

company, Techni-Serve (located in Grandview), provides the

Club with the copier that prints the hard copies of the

newsletters, as well as a lot of club forms. As you can see

(if you get this mailed to you or pick up a copy at one of the

ranges), our club newsletter is now printed in full color. I’m

pretty excited about it, and I hope you all are, too!

Kind Regards,

The Editor
