Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Perhaps you've heard the story of the atheist who while out hiking fell off the side of a cliff, only to grab on to a branch that stopped him from falling to a certain death. He held on for dear life, with nothing between him and the canyon below. He decided at that moment to give prayer a chance, asking God for salvation from his fate. A voice from above told him to let go of the branch; his new faith would save him. The man thought for a moment, and then looking skyward asked, "Is there anyone else up there I can talk to about this?" When we are offered the gift of eternal life, do we ignore it? We listen to the words of Jesus as he admonishes a crowd of grumblers: "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day." We are drawn to God; on Sundays we are drawn to Mass. Our parishes draw us in from the parking lot or the street; our pastor draws us to the altar to receive the holy Eucharist. At times, we may feel as if we are holding on for our dear lives, barely able to make it through each day. It is at these times that we quiet ourselves and listen to God. We are drawn into loving arms, and we are safe. Underlying Jesus' message that he is the bread of life is that in order for us to receive eternal life, we must live in love. To live in love means to seek Jesus, and through him God, in contemplative prayer. We seek him, because doing so is the beginning of true love (CCC 2709). In the sharing of the Eucharist at every Mass, we are reaffirming our vow to live a life of love. Today, as you approach the altar, leave behind your anger and bitterness. Let go of that branch, and you will be saved.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A minister accepted “the call” to move to another church. In preparation for his move, he placed the following order at the local pet store: "I need at least fifty mice, two thousand ants and as many of those little silverfish as you can get." The sales clerk replied, "We can probably do that, but it might take some time. Do you mind if I ask why you are placing such an unusual order?" The minister replied, "I've accepted a call to another church and my church council was unhappy about my answering the call. They have been giving me a hard time ever since my announcement. They insist that I leave the parsonage the way I found it. I aim to do just that!"

THE ASSUMPTION: OUR HOPE

When great and famous people die, they are usually given an elaborate funeral and buried in a great tomb. Often buildings and streets are named after them. Their great hope is that their memory will live after them. But when we die, because we are common people, we have no hope that we will receive an elaborate funeral or be buried in a great tomb. Probably no building or street will be named after us. Yet we all hope to live on in the memories, thoughts, and

prayers of those who are close to us. The feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary tells us of the greater and deeper hope that we all share. We hope that we will live not just in the memory of others but forever with Mary and all the saints in heaven. The Assumption celebrates Mary's entry into heaven where she lives fully the risen life with Christ her Son. As Mary shared so fully in the life of her Son Jesus on earth, it was fitting that she share fully and immediately in his victory over death. We believe that she now lives in the full presence of God. There she continues her special role in God's plan; there she intercedes for us. She remembers us who still seek to attain what she has fully received -- a share in the risen life of Christ. We would be consoled to know that when we die, we will be remembered. But the most consoling thought is to know that God remembers us and wants to be one with God now and for all eternity. We see this clearly in Mary's life. She is in a real sense the first fruits of those who have shared in Christ's victory over death. She shares the risen life in both body and soul, in her whole person. Mary is our hope since we too look forward to sharing the full life of the risen Christ. If we are faithful as Mary was, we will be remembered in the only way that counts. We will be remembered by God who calls us to share divine glory in heaven forever. The feast of the Assumption of Mary should fill us with great hope and help renew our trust in Christ. Where Mary has gone, we too hope to follow.

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY This Saturday, August 15th, is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Please note: It is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation this year. The Feast of the Assumption is one of the feasts that, if it falls on a Saturday or Monday, loses its obligatory status. There will be only one Mass for the feast and that is the regularly scheduled 8:30 a.m. Mass. Since many people will probably choose to attend this Mass, it will be in the church rather than in the chapel.

IN A FEW MORE WEEKS Beginning on Thursday, August 27th, the 8:30 a.m. Mass will be moved to 9:00 a.m. This will take place every Thursday, beginning August 27th. The reason for this is because the students begin a half hour later due to the Munster buses altering their Thursday schedules. Many of our students are dependent upon the Munster buses. So as to avoid confusion with days off, vacation, et cetera, Thursday Masses, beginning August 27th, will always be at 9:00 a.m. instead of 8:30 a.m. whether school is in session or not. Thank you for understanding our need to change the Mass schedule.

Doodles for Google

Recognizing the many talents of our students and seeing an opportunity for a unique project, Computer

Lab Manager, Mrs. Pat Laciak introduced the Doodle 4 Google art contest to her students. This competition,

sponsored by Google and many partnering corporations, as well as the National Design Museum was initiated to

encourage the next generation of conscientious designers and artists.

Doodle 4 Google is a competition where students in grades Kindergarten through 12th are invited to reinvent

Google's homepage logo. Since both our country and our world have been undergoing some very significant changes, this year’s doodle theme centered on "What I Wish for the World". The Google company believes in

thinking big and dreaming big. This year’s theme addresses the importance of thinking big and

encourages students throughout the country to take an active interest in the world around them.

Our students stressed the environment, conservation, education, disabilities awareness, child welfare, and hope for those afflicted with illness in their designs.

Six St. Thomas More School finalists were chosen and their designs were submitted to the state of Indiana

Google committee. Those STMS finalists were: Elizabeth Beckman, Anna Bilse, Kelsey Gibson, Mia

Torres, Brittany Barajas, and Jillian Bridgeman. Congratulations students!

During Springfest, one of the highlights of the week is the annual

volleyball game pitting the 8th grade girls against the 8th grade boys. But the real excitement comes when the Faculty vs. the 8th Grade Girls game starts. The entire student body gets involved, cheering for their favorite team. Once again, the overall crowd favorite was staff member, Mr. John Spence, Head of Maintenance.
