ABSTRACTThis study analyzes the standard Pakistan social
studies curriculum to investigate (1) the extent to which itrepresents ethnic nationalities of Pakistan, and (2) the extent towhich it demonstrates its contribution to the process of nationalcohesion and integration. The findings presented are based on acontent analysis (both trend and variable) of a representative sampleof standard social studies textbooks used in secondary schools inPakistan during the 40 years from 1947 to 1987. This time is dividedinto three major eras of political changes that have dominated thehistory of modern Pakistan including: (1) the early establishment erafrom 1947 to 1955 when the one-unit scheme was imposed by the federal.government, which abolished both the identity and provincial autonomyof the Pakistani ethnic nationalities; (2) the one-unit era from 1955to 1968 until the military coup d'etat of President General YahyaKhan, who abolished the one-unit structure under popular unrest andpressure; and (3) the post one-unit era from 1970 to the presentduring which East Pakistan separated to become Bangala Desh, thefirst civilian government was established and overthrown, andprocesses of Islamization were introduced. In the final analysis, themajor integrative variable investigated were found to be deficient intheir equitable representation of both individual and collectiveaffairs of the Pakistani ethnic nationalities. The national socialstudies curriculum in Pakistan gives the impression of onlyrepresenting the migrant community from central India, and portraysthe majority of the indigenous Pakistani nationalities asinsignificant. The responsible factor appears to be unequaldistribution of political power. (DK)
