Tense Changes When Using Reported Speech
Normally, the tense in reported speech is one tense back in time from the tense in direct
speech:
PRESENT TENSE
Simple present(verb)------------------------------------------------------Simple past(verb)
"I always drink coffee", she said. She said that she always drank coffee.
1. “I work on time”, she said.

2. “We play football daily”, they said.
___________________________________________________________________________
Present perfect (has/have + verb) ---------------------------------Past perfect (had + verb)
"I have done my work", he told me. He told me that he had done his work.
1. “We have watched this movie”, they said.

2. “My mother has baked a cake”, Annum said.
___________________________________________________________________________
Present continuous [is/am/are+ verb(ing)]-----------Past continuous[was/were + verb(ing)]
"I am reading a book", he explained. He explained that he was reading a book
1. “We are going to the mall”, they said.

2. “My friend is helping me complete my work”, Zarmina said.
___________________________________________________________________________
3. “I am playing monopoly”, she said.

Present perfect continuous-------------- ------------------------------------- Past perfect continuous
[has/have + been + verb(ing)]------------------------------------[had + been + verb(ing)]
They complained, "We have been waiting for hours.”They complained that they had been
waiting for hours.
1. “I have been baking a cake for two hours”, Maira said.
