The Snowy MountainsBoth tranquil and exhilarating, the Snowy Mountains can be enjoyed all year round and boasts the perfect getaway for visitors wanting to leave the hustle and bustle behind.

The Snowy Mountains region stretches from Canberra south to the Alpine region and down to the Monaro Plains. It encompasses the Kosciuszko National Park, which is where Mount Kosciuszko stands. Elevated at 2,228 metres, it’s the highest peak on the mainland. In the summer time, the region comes alive with a splendid array of wild f lowers, predominantly during January and February. In the winter time, the Alpine

peaks are f lush with snow, which affords enthusiasts the opportunity to ski, snowboard and toboggan. The region, however, is not limited to just two seasons. The Snowy Mountains provides a myriad of things to see and do throughout the year. Visitors can partake in activites such as bushwalking, bike riding, horseriding and fishing as well as cultural festivals and events.A number of quaint townships thread throughout the region and offer their own unique attractions. The Snowy Mountains Muster, a three day annual event occurring in late December, celebrates this wonderful region with bush poetry, art and horse events.

Cooma, the largest township in the Snowy Mountains region, is the gateway to the picturesque Alpine district.

When one of the greatest civil engineering wonders in the world, the Snowy Mountains Scheme, set up its main office in Cooma in the 1940s, Cooma changed forever. People from all around the world moved into the town at that time. Some moved on, some stayed, and today Cooma has a diverse population of around 9,000.Cooma boasts four distinct seasons. With cold winters and mild summers, the town is suited for year round activities. Winter brings a rush of visitors to enjoy the snowfields, while the rest of the year Cooma attracts anybody from extreme sport fanatics to wandering holiday-makers and people tracing their family trees. The local landscape varies widely – from rugged rainforests and waterfalls in the east, to the ancient mountains and snow gums in the west, and in the middle, the Monaro Plains.Today visitors can drop into the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre in Cooma to marvel at the engineering feats of the Snowy Scheme.
