THE HILL - Although there are a bunch o ski

hills in and around Ban, locals and visitors

alike will tell you that its all about the Shine.

I you say youre going shredding in Ban,

youll be talking about Sunshine Village.

The ski area is spread over three individual

mountains Mt. Standish, Goats Eye Mtn

and Lookout Mtn - and each has something

totally dierent to oer. For lessons days,Sunshine has some incredible training

terrain: beautiul, big, wide-open green and

blue runs that are ideal or nailing the drills

required to pass your instructor exams. But,

when not in training, you can smash it on

some o Canadas toughest in-bound slopes...

entry into the notorious Delirium Dive is only

permitted with an avi pack and a buddy!

Sunshine has it all rom awesome tree-skiing

to big-mountain powder aces and rom sick

parks with monster hits to some o the most

    insane backcountry terrain.

THE COMMUNITY - Ban is a very cool little

town in the middle o the Canadian Rockies.

Youd think the town planner was a rad

shredder hersel as the whole town seems

geared towards skiers and snowboarders and

then to entertaining them when the chairlits

    stop running!

I Carlsberg did instructor training courses,

HQ would be Ban! Theres a bunch o pubs

& bars i you ancy a drink or two. But i two

becomes three becomes our, you can get

your boogie on at Auroras, The Dancing

Sasquatch or Hoodoos! As well as nights out,

we will also organise trips to the ice hockey,

bingo bowling (more un than it sounds!),

cinema & DVD nights, ootball & basketball

tournaments, ancy dress parties and poker

nights. Ban is where its at. Your SnowSkool

reps will be there to ensure that you make the

    most o your season.

    ACCOMMODATION - On the SnowSkool

course you will be living at the Ban Alpine

Centre. Essentially its a lodge and it is the ideal

    destination or young SnowSkool students

allowing you to live, eat, drink and socialise

together. Its an awesome set-up - the sense

    o international community, o camaraderie

and o atmosphere is the most important

thing about this accommodation and has to

be experienced to be ully appreciated.

The hub o the lodge is SnowSkool HQ a

large chilling area where its all about sitting

in ront o the re with your laptop, listening

to some tunes, checking out Facebook (via

the ree WiFi!) and chatting (yes, actually

chatting!) to your new best buddies about

    the days riding.

The Ban Alpine Centre has incredible

acilities too; we mentioned the ree WiFi but

we didnt tell you about the ice-climbing wall,

the restaurant Cougar Petes - or the Stormy

C!!! The Storm Cellar is the on-site pub and is

a perect hang-out or SnowSkool students.

For your amusement is ree pool, ree darts

and table ootballalso FREE! The TV is

always pumping out sick movies like the Art

o Flight or, at times, Premiership matches!

Wednesday night is open-mic jam night so

i you ancy a strum, a drum or a sing, you

can get involved. Friday night is karaoke night

and every night is cheap drinks night. TheStorm Cellar has developed legendary status

in Ban and it will be approximately 50 paces

    rom your bed!

    THE BIGGESTSKIING IN AMERICA

THE HILL - With more than 5500 acres o

terrain, Big Skys motto is The Biggest Skiing in

America. But that is not even hal the storyour

bros in the States regard Big Sky as a training

ground or Alaska. Why? Well, 4350t o vertical

descent and 35t o light, uy snow make this

a ull-on steep & deep resort. And some o the

terrain is ully insanewith long couloirs opening

into huge powder elds, cli drops into tight

chutes and single descents stretching 3000

    vertical eet in waist-deep powder!

Now please let me remind you o the name o

this resort: BIG SKY. Youve probably not heard it

beore. And that, my riend, is the beauty o the

place. Even during the busiest weeks, lit lines

are non-existent. Locals say that the only thing

that will slow down your riding is your own leg

    strengthor lack o it!

I you want to get down with some reestyle

riding, Big Sky has a sick park but the inter-

connected Moonlight Basin is the place to go

with two incredible snow parks with everything

rom basic boxes to monster table-tops!

THE COMMUNITY - Best thing about Big

Skyski-in/ ski-out. This is pretty rare (and

    generally super-expensive) in North America.

So ater a big day shredding the pow, you can

sink into a hot-tub, dive into the pool at the

Huntley Lodge or point your tips to one o

the local bars or a cheeky beer.

Big Sky is a lively mountain village with our

or ve grubby bars (!) and a ew more classy

establishments. Kick back with some live

music at Scissorbills Saloon or head overor a beer at the Lone Peak Microbrewery. I

you ancy something to eat, youll be spoilt

or choice with over twenty eateries Italian,

Fondue, Steak, Burger, Seaood, Pizza, Thai,

Fine Dining andThe Montana Dinner Yurt!

Jump onboard a snowcat, travel 2 miles up

the hill and enjoy a 3-course meal with live

acoustic music in a backcountry yurt!

Apart rom lies essentials skiing/ riding,

eating and drinking, theres a lot o un to be

had at Big Sky with a zipline, snowshoe-ing,

BIG WHITESMOTTO IS ITS THE SNOWIN REFERENCE TOCANADAS LIGHTEST,FLUFFIEST POWDER

THE HILL - Despite being one o Canadas ve

largest ski resorts, Big White is rereshingly

    uncommercialised and lit lineswell, them

other resorts can keep em! Biggie is well-

regarded by those in the know in the search

or pristine powder snow. The weather rolls in

rom the Pacic Ocean, dries out on its journey

over interior BC and, when it hits the Monashee

Range, the slopes o Big White get hammered

by bucket-loads o Canadas driest, ufest

    powder snow!

A natural playground, Biggie is incredibly un

to ride. It oers antastic training terrain that is

ideal or the SnowSkool course; lots o cruisy

greens and wide-open blue runs that are

essential or perecting drills and learning the

more technical details o skiing/ riding like a

snowpro. To test your mettle, you can move on

to the tougher black runs, drop into the double-

black diamond Cli Area or hit up the steeps &

    deeps underneath the Powder Chair.

The Snow Park is super well-tuned with some

insane hits and rails and you can ip, spin and

slide to the sounds o the latest beats pumped

out by the Park Crew! But Big White is probably

most amous or its tree-skiingwherever you

are on the hill, cast the piste map aside and dive

into the nearest patch o trees to experience a

    dierent line every day!

THE COMMUNITY - Big White is Canadas

largest ski-in/ ski-out villagethe High Street

in Big White is actually a pisted ski run!

Although commonplace in Europe, ski-in/ ski-

out access is not so easy to come by in NorthAmerica and the benets o being able to clip

in at the back door o your digs are hard to

    over-emphasise. Youll quickly appreciate the

simple things like an extra hal hour in bed on

a cold Canadian winter morning or the ability

to return home or lunch! Like it should be,

the slopes orm the main part o the resorts

inrastructure and are a useul way to access

all the local amenities restaurants, bars and

shops. The atmosphere in Big White is riendly

and super-relaxed but with some great bars

    and a bustling nightlie.

ACCOMMODATION - In spite o all our tightorganisation and hard work, eedback tells us

that the main draw o the SnowSkool Big White

course is the accommodation! All students are

housed in luxurious and spacious ski-in/ ski-

out apartments, each with a private hot tub as

well as a swimming pool and gym. Whatever

we say about it, you will be overawed!

You can nish your days lessons and be in the

hot-tub on your balcony with a cold beer in

your hand within two minutes o leaving the

pistes. Ater dinner, all into one o the huge

leather soas, stoke a re and relaaaaaaax!

Ater the lights go down, Wanaka has a

pretty happening night-lienot as hectic as

some ski towns and certainly calmer than

Queenstown but there are plenty o places to

    party until the wee hours!

ACCOMMODATION - We ofer two accommodation

options or the SnowSkool NZ course. The

    standard package oers accommodation at

BASE backpackers which is situated slap-bang in the centre o Wanaka. The modern

backpackers oers great acilities such as

    wireless internet, ully-equipped kitchens, large

TV room and a restaurant and bar downstairs.

    The premium package oers accommodation

lounge/ kitchen/ dining area, laundry acilities,

    entertainment systems and private balconies.

Students can also make use o the sauna and

    heated locker room.

AN INTENSE TRAINING PROGRAMME ON ANAWESOME SKI HILL IN A LAID-BACK TOWN

THE HILL - Treble Cone is a pretty dope place

to shred. You cant really argue with the acts.

Its thebiggest with 1350 acres o terrain...

    steepest with 2300t o vertical...deepest

with 18t o annual snowall. And, man, the

views rom TC are something else! You can

almost reach out and touch the Lake and the

mountains beyond. You wont get bored even

ater seeing it every day o the season!

TC is a locals mountain more than anything

and has some super-gnarly terrain to push

you out o your comort zone - 45% o the

hill is classed as advanced or expert! TC is

the southern-winter training ground or the

national ski teams o Austria and Norway!

The o-piste and ree-riding at Treble Cone

are legendary with insane chutes, crazy gullies,

huge powder bowls and a bunch o natural

hal-pipes and hits all over the mountain. There

is some incredible training terrain too and we

    have a group o scarily well-qualied instructors

to make sure that you can smash the mountain

rather than the mountain smashing you!

THE COMMUNITY - For sure Wanaka must

be one o the coolest places on earth.

Situated on the shores o Lake Wanaka and

    surrounded by snow-capped peaks, Wanaka

lies at the heart o a World Heritage site. Its

residents are extremely riendly and very

outdoorsy dont think your ears are playing

tricks on you i you hear an 80 year old lycra-

clad Granny tell you she has just hammered

it down Mount Iron on her o-road bike.Welcome to New Zealand!

There is so much to do, the town is just

like a massive playground with world-class

    skiing, mountain biking, kayaking, sailing,

sky-diving and hiking all in one place. Nearby

    Queenstown is the adrenaline-uelled capital

o the back-packing world and, with bungee

    jumps, white-water rating, canyon swinging,

luge and jet boating, you wont run out o

things to do on our NZ course!

MEET THE TEAMTHE AGEING PARK RAT - Former Paratrooper

Adrian Dunk Gourlay is our course organiser

and spends a lot o time going into a lot

o detail about things you wouldnt even

think about! On-snow, Dunks a reestyle

snowboarding guru and it is rumoured that

    he once nose-pressed a sixty-one mile long

kinked S-rail somewhere in the backcountry

between Ban and Revelstoke, all in aid o

charity. Going to press, Dunk has racked up six

seasons in Canada and two in NZ.

THE SHEILA Marion Fagan is CEO o

SnowSkool Australia and, in between running

a amily and living a social lie that would

make Kylie Minogue look like the shy, retiring

type, Marion deals with all the demands o our

customers rom the other side o the world.

She repped the ull NZ course in 2010 and

tends to make an appearance or the rst week

or two at one o the courses to help knock the

reps into shape, mother her beloved Aussies

and entertain us with her rapier wit!

SNOWSKOOL REPS: Whos who?! Weve got

quite a ew reps on the books at SnowSkool

what with all the courses that we are now

running in Canada, France, NZ and USA.

Theres Sarah whos a loud-mouth Kiwi bird

and sick snowboarder and wee Scottish Rosie

who cooks like Heston, mothers like Delia and

is loved by all. Theres AJ who takes himsel a

lot less seriously than the photo suggests but

skis more seriously than it suggests. AJ tends

to hook up and do his seasons with Tom

a mild-mannered Home Countys type that,

when sent to Canada, grows wild acial hair

and skis like a mad-man! King o customer

eedback, George, impresses the ladies o-

snow and the men on-snow and particularly

in the park. Jordis not too shabby in the park

either although doesnt he know it! Less well-

known is that Jordi is uent in Swedish...this

has yet to come in useul!

The Beautiul People That Make It All Tick

THE SKIING HAS-BEEN - Phil Purdie let

the City and the world o Investment

Banking to set up SnowSkool in 2003 with

a small loan rom the old man. Phils a good

ole-ashioned ski anatic and has skied

throughout the world (in places as diverse

as Japan and South Arica) as well as

having eight seasons experience in Canada,

Europe and NZ under his belt. Recently he

has turned his attention to making sure his

one year old son, Jackson, skis in the Winter

Olympics in 2030 (in the Cairngorms).

THE BRAINS - Ater working as a Management

Consultant in London or ten years and

picking up a MBA rom Cambridge University,

Steve Purdie joined SnowSkool and quickly

restructured everything we do! Although a

    hal-decent skier, Steve preers spreadsheets

to park skis and accounting to backcountry

shredding and was recently suspended or

two days thinking time or suggesting that

there is nothing wrong with snowblades.
