“Because I Can” Project

Turning a Time of Grief into a Time of Stewardship! During his 34 years, Ryan Bjerklie lived his life by a few mottos, two of which were: “Because I can,” and “I’ll buy another one, they have more at the store.” Living by those mottos, Ryan was a giver. If a friend needed something that Ryan had, Ryan would do whatever he could to help because he could and knew they had more at the store. Ryan died tragically in a motor vehicle accident in February of 2009. Knowing the month of February were be difficult for the Bjerklie family, Ryan’s aunt Renae, developed the “Because I can” Ryan Bjerklie Disaster Relief Project. Recalling the kindness and support shown to her nephew’s family following Ryan’s death, Renae said it was almost imperative to pay back the kindness. As the anniversary of his death approached, the family chose to do something to honor Ryan’s memory. “We need to do something to ease the pain of the anniversary of Ryan’s death”, Renae said. The goal of the “Because I Can “project was to complete 500 school kits. School kits are distributed in Haiti and other disaster-stricken areas by Lutheran World Relief. Renae began searching for promotional offers to purchase items for the kits. She found out that Marco Promotions had an offer for 10% off bulk orders of pencils. She e-mailed the company, explained the goal of the project, and asked Marco if they had any misprinted pencils that could be purchased at an additional discount. To her surprise, she received 3,000 number two pencils free of charge! Renae also gave her 91 year old mother, Clara, the task of bundling groups of six pencils and a large eraser with rubber bands. Clara had been

quite ill. This project gave her renewed energy and purpose! “She became obsessed” Renae said. Quoting her mother,” Renae, wake me up early in the morning- I have work to do!”

School kits include:

Notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper approximately 8" x 10 ½" totaling 150-200 sheets (if using 70-sheet notebooks, please include three); no loose-leaf paper

One blunt scissors

One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other

One pencil sharpener

Six new, unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band

One eraser approximately 2 ½" long

12 sheets of construction paper in assorted colors (if necessary, fold in half to fit into the school kit bag)

One box of 16 or 24 crayons

One sturdy cloth bag approximately 12" X 14" with cloth handles or drawstring closure (see LWR website for downloadable patterns).

Thoughts from a Board Member

by Arlene Teigen Sacred and Christian music has always been a part of my life and has inspired me throughout my faith walk. When I first heard the song “Untitled Hymn“ (Come To Jesus) by Chris Rice, it brought me to tears as each verse of his song produced a visual picture of different experiences in my life. The first verse reminds us of our sinful self and talks of our acceptance of God’s love in our lives. It makes me think of how we have to ask Christ into our hearts, to be our Savior and ask him daily for guidance, “Come to Jesus “. The second verse makes clear that our sins are forgiven, our burden is lifted. We are free to praise Christ for washing away our sins. In our rejoicing we can “Sing to Jesus”. The third verse shares that as children sometimes we crawl and may even fall. Growing in our faith can feel like we are crawling or taking baby steps, but Jesus is there encouraging us. How many times will we fall? Especially when we think we can go through life independent from God. When we fall we must “Fall on Jesus”. The fourth verse speaks of difficult experiences we face in life, the shedding of tears. Life does bring us challenges, the loss of loved ones, the disappointments we feel, the pain we are suffering or sharing in another’s pain. When the tears come we need to “Cry to Jesus”. The fifth verse radiates the joy and happiness we feel in life. That joy, that happiness, that love, truly spills over for Christ to share with us. When we are overflowing with such joy we will want to “Dance for Jesus”. The sixth and final verse speaks of our last heart beat on earth, when we can “kiss the world goodbye,” “then laugh on glory’s side“. If you have experienced someone dying and leaving this world, you may have seen their eyes fixed upward, as if they were seeing heaven or Christ himself, you were witnessing a spiritual moment like no other. That is when we must let them go and let them “Fly to Jesus”.

Heart Health for Women

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in American women. What a woman eats and her lifestyle choices play a big part in her heart health. Women who are overweight or obese, who eat a lot of fatty foods, drink large amounts of alcohol, smoke cigarettes and do not exercise regularly are at greater risk for heart disease.

Other Risk Factors

While you can change what you eat and whether you exercise, there are some risk factors for heart disease you cannot change. These include:

Aging: As women get older, their risk for heart disease goes up. Gender: More women than men have heart attacks and strokes as they age. Family History: If a woman has a close blood relative with heart disease, the chances

she will have heart disease are greater. Race: Black women have a higher risk of heart disease than white women. Their chances

of dying from a stroke are also greater. Previous Heart Attack: If a woman has already had a heart attack, she is at risk of having

another one.

Take Care of Your Heart

Choose heart-healthy foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat or fat-free dairy, lean protein and heart-healthy fats. Limit your calories by filling up on high-fiber foods like whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Fiber can help you lose weight and keep the pounds off by filling you up faster and for a longer time.

Fat Matters for the Heart

The amount and kind of fat you eat makes a difference. Fat should make up 20 percent to 35 percent of your total calories, but only 10 percent of those fat calories should come from saturated fat. Research shows that eating too much saturated fat is not good for the heart. Foods like bacon, red meat, butter, ice cream and other full-fat dairy foods contain saturated fat.

Unsaturated fat is a different story. It has been shown to be beneficial for cholesterol levels and overall cardiovascular health. Foods like olive oil, canola oil, avocadoes, walnuts and almonds contain unsaturated fat.

Omega-3 fatty acids, a type of unsaturated fat, have been found to be helpful in preventing sudden death from heart attacks. Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna and herring, contain two types of omega-3 fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

9

The recommended intake for omega-3 fatty acids is 500 milligrams per day. That’s basically two 6-ounce servings of fatty fish per week.

Another type of omega-3 fat, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), is also proven to have cardiac benefits. Flaxseeds and walnuts contain ALA. Consume 2 tablespoons of flaxseed or 1 ounce (about a handful) of walnuts each day for heart health.

Fruits and Vegetables Matter

When it comes to loading up your plate, fruit and vegetables are where it’s at. Not only are they low in calories and high in fiber and antioxidants, they can also help keep blood pressure in check. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke. What makes fruits and veggies so good? They are packed with potassium, a mineral that has been shown to lower blood pressure in clinical studies.

Aim for 4,700 milligrams of potassium every day for good blood pressure. That’s at least 2 cups of fruit and 3 cups of vegetables daily.

Slow and Steady Weight Loss for Heart Health

If you are overweight or obese, gradual weight loss offers the best results for overall health. Do not deny yourself everything at once. Subtract about 500 calories a day; you will lose about 1 pound a week. It doesn’t take much to see results; your overall health will improve noticeably with a 5 percent to 10 percent drop in weight. Get at least 30 minutes of regular exercise most days of the week; this will help with weight loss and keep your heart beating strongly.

This is Bold!

All God’s Children Annual Luncheon benefits Lost and Found Ministries On May 5th, Trinity Lutheran Church Women (TLCW) hosted their annual salad and pie luncheon to benefit the programs of Lost and Found Ministries of Moorhead. With supporting funds received from the Clay County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, TLCW presented a gift of the entire net proceeds of $3,500 they received from this benefit luncheon to Bill Iverson of the Lost and Found Ministries program. This year’s luncheon theme was “All God’s Children”. Selected dolls from a collection of more than 10,000 dolls owned by a Trinity congregational member, Irene Hogan, served as centerpieces and as decorations throughout the Christian Life Center at Trinity Lutheran Church. An annual event designed to benefit a local charitable organization in need, the Salad and Pie Luncheon involved the participation of more than 140 volunteers from the congregation, and involved the making of more than 80 pies and 80 salads . This luncheon is held in early May of each year.

Pause For Prayer This prayer was shared by a WELCA member who learned it while in Nurses training over 60 years

ago. When you want something “new” look to the past and make it “new again”!

O Heavenly Father,

We thank thee for food and remember the hungry.

We thank thee for health and remember the sick.

We thank thee for friends and remember the friendless.

We thank thee for freedom and remember the enslaved.

May these rememberences stir us to service that thy gifts

to us may be used for others.

Amen
