About ZIKA Outbreak

.

The Zika Virus infection is usually asymptomatic in nearly 80% of the cases. As a result ,many cases of Zika goes unnoticed ,making it difficult to estimate the true scale of the outbreak in the Americas. One in four people infected with Zika develop symptoms-mild illness, such as fever, rash, muscle/joint pain and conjunctivitis. Case fatality rate is 0 as per the present reports.Since the infection is spread through Aedes species mosquitoes (which bite during day time) which are commonly seen in these countries, and since it causes foetal abnormalities, countries such as Columbia, Ecuador, El-Salvador and Jamaica have recommended that women delay pregnancy. On January, 2016, The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, USA advised pregnant women to consider “postponing travel to countries with ongoing Zika virus transmission”.Officials are still investigating whether Zika virus causes Microcephaly in newborns, but the link is 'strongly suspected ', according to WHO. Evidence of the virus had been found in the placenta and amniotic fluid of mothers and in the brains of the foetuses or newborns.WHO estimates that 1.5 million people might have been infected in Brazil. We can expect3-4 million of Zika virus disease.Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General, WHO had said that the virus is 'spreading explosively' through the Americas.Since the first outbreak was reported in May 2015 in Brazil, the virus had already spread to 44 countries. It had spread to Australia through travellers and is anticipated to spread to rest of the Americas, Europe and Asia. Now WHO communicates to member countries about the public health risks. Little attention was paid initially as Zika infection remained asymptomatic and self-limiting. But emerging data on foetal complications altered this equation and all focus had been directed at finding an efficacious vaccine urgently. Linking with Gillen –Barrie syndrome also is of concern. Honduras reported some Zika patients developing Gillian –Barre syndrome also.Kerala have high risk of Zika virus disease because of the high density of Aedes Mosquitoes ,frequent international travel by Keralites , lot of foreigners visiting Kerala.

In Ernakulam District ,Dist Collector convened a meeting on 23-2- 2016 to discuss the issue in which Airport & sea port authorities also attended with Health personals. People coming from South American countries were kept under surveillance. As of today, there are no cases detected in India. Still we have to keep vigil, continue surveillance of travelers from such countries and give training to all Health personnel.

India is among the top 10 countries facing greatest risk of Natural Disasters like floods ,earthquakes ,tsunami .In such times of crisis ,little preparedness can go a long way in helping oneself .The golden rule is “Be prepared.”An important step is to have a “go bag “with essentials to help people fend for themselves. An emergency kit should have- a first aid kit, a battery-operated torch, essential medicines, dry food items, water, money, a set of thick ropes, candles , matches and shoes. It must also have copies of important documents , a whistle ,cell phone with chargers ,contact and meeting place information for your household ,small regional map ,extra set of car and home keys ,light weight waterproof blankets or plastic ponchos, child-care supplies or other special care items , a battery powered radio , dust masks to filter contaminated air ,plastic sheeting and duct tape to fashion a shelter in place ,a complete change of clothing.Pack these items in a sturdy, easy-to-carry container such as a backpack or suitcase on wheels. The “go bag” should be stored year round in an accessible place. This is in case one has to leave home all of a sudden. If residents are prepared with such a bag, it could come in handy, if the person is waiting for a rescue team. Having such a bag at home will induce one to be prepared and ready. This is all the more important in the background of the recent Chennai floods.
