Don’t Buy… Make Your Own!

The sourcing of nitrogen for the current and next generation of offshore vessels can pose fundamental logistical challenges for operators. Even today, with myriad options for dedicated nitrogen sources available on the open market, many operators continue to transport fully pressurized bulk tank bundles or liquid nitrogen tanks from shore to ship. While such transports are usually done in a safe and responsible manner, they still carry inherent safety risks; additionally, there are often realized losses in transit that prevent operators from fully utilizing the gas that they purchased. This does not take into account the effects of equalization and pressure decay once the gas is aboard the vessel, which often causes unplanned downtime events and additional labor from operating crews having to continually disconnect and reconnect bottle valves and pipe connections.

Having a dedicated nitrogen source aboard the vessel is a safe and efficient choice for vessel operators for many reasons:

1. It acts independently of large-scale rig or ship nitrogen sys-tems, alleviating concerns about potential underpressuriza-tion or pressure decay.

2. The large-scale nitrogen system then becomes a backup sys-tem, adding redundancy to whatever process is being ser-viced.

3. It operates only when required by the process it is dedicat-ed to; with the addition of optional downstream storage, the system will only operate to keep this storage volume fully pressurized, ensuring full gas supply pressure at any time it is required.

As a world-class supplier of nitrogen solutions, we continue to look for novel and innovative ways to improve on-site nitrogen delivery for the next generation of mobile offshore drilling units, drillships, and production vessels. No matter what the applica-tion, there is only one question operators must ask themselves:

Why buy nitrogen when you can make your own?
