Anti Bullying weekSt Stephens get involved in November’s Anti Bullying Alliance

St. Stephen’s Junior School in Canterbury is again getting involved in Anti-bullying week. This year’s Anti-bullying Alliance

campaign runs from 16th – 20th November.

Teachers and children will be exploring this topic throughout the week during assemblies, lessons, workshops. A group of pupils in the Performing Arts department will be performing a dance routine to a piece of music called ‘Hopeful’.

The music chosen by Dance teacher, Miss Harrison said;

“I chose this song as it was written about anti-bullying and performed by the young pop duo, Bars and Melody, it is about their own experience of being bullied. I felt our children would be able to connect with the meaningful lyrics and practising our routine for this cause has given us a really positive focus.”

St Faiths At AshAt St Faith’s at Ash prep School we have a two form entry all through from reception to Year 6 with small classes of no more than 16 to ensure a healthy teacher/pupil engagement and focus on high quality teaching. We offer a broad based curriculum to ensure that we are a school for every child but also specialise in the core subjects to ensure success at all levels. As a result we achieved major success in the Kent Test, achieved well above the national average in the SATs and all nine children who sat scholarships to independent schools all received a major award. There is also a wealth of opportunity for children who require support to engage successfully with the curriculum and make progress through small intervention groups. Likewise small classes with specialist teachers are also organised for children who are gifted and talented in specialist areas. To support this we have Specialist facilities and teachers in Sport, Science, Music, IT and French for all children from Nursery through to Year 6. All children in the school play a musical instrument as part of the curriculum. Years 1 &2 learn the violin, Years 3 & 4 recorder and Year 5 and 6 concentrate on percussion. Over a hundred children have private music lessons at the school. Drama is also taught through LAMDA lesson and we achieve amazing

success in the twice year assessment.Sport is important at the school with fixtures arranged from Year 1 upwards for both boys and girls. Our specialist sports teacher organises squad practice sessions at break times to prepare the children for matches and as a result we experience huge success in local and regional competitions. Good behaviour and manners are characteristic of all the children and we have a strong reputation at our secondary feeder schools for an excellent work ethic and good behaviour management. We are quite rightly very proud of our children who are fantastic ambassadors for the school in all aspects and arenas of performance. A culture of reward and praise pervades the school in all aspects of the curriculum and Friday Celebration assembly is the highlight of the week with achievements awarded for class start of the week, sport, music, Lego Club, Friend of the Week and house champions to mention but a few.But more important than anything else we are a school where the happiness of every child is paramount.

21st Century living can be demandingIn between juggling the school run, work and home life there is not much time to relax and sometimes we can feel jaded

We know releasing everyday stress helps us stay balanced and promotes good health, but how best to do this?Reiki is a safe, gentle, non-intrusive hands-on healing technique from Japan. It brings our energy system back into balance: releasing stress, leaving us feeling refreshed, energised, peaceful, focused and centered. Reiki works and balances on 4 levels:Physical: eases aches, pains and headaches, boosts energy levels and improves quality of sleep.Mental: after treatment the mind is calm and clear and thoughts are more ordered.Emotional: aids the gentle release of stuck emotions like anxiety, depression and grief.Spiritual: Reiki reconnects you with you and builds strong reserves to draw on.Life has its stresses and strains, Reiki helps us take them in our stride so things flow more smoothly. Rather than pushing on through why not try a Reiki treatment?

Four boys attended the Kent Junior School Cross Country Championship at Detling on Saturday 14th November.

It was a huge event, with over 80 schools represented across Kent and over 1,000 competitors taking part.

Benji Farnham ran in the Year 4 race and finished an impressive 28th out of a field of 152.

Jens Chappell ran in the Year 5 race and did extremely well.

In the Year 6 race, both Harrison White and Tom Hutton ran great races, with Tom achieving a podium position of 3rd and he

is waiting to hear if this qualifies him for the National Junior Cross Country Championships in March 2016. What a fantastic achievement by all the children involved, who received a resounding cheer from all the children and staff in today’s assembly.

In addition, we have a number of children who regularly compete in the Kent College cross country competitions held on a Saturday each month. Well done to all of those children and I would encourage others of you who enjoy running, to enter those races.

New Provider brings us into 21st Century

Over the past few weeks School News has experienced some issues with its telephone system, some of you may have tried to call us on our old number 01227 828688 and the line was dead. Well we have not gone out of business as some people thought, we just had some technical issues. These issues are sorted now and having spoken with Scott Grey from Everycomm we have been advised of the benefits of VoIP.

Not only is there a huge cost saving but there is also infinately more you can achieve with a VoIP system, more lines, better call clarity and far more flexibility. Did you know, you can take a VoIP handset home and make and recieve calls to your office number just by plugging the phone into your computer. After talking with Scott about what other services they can provide, we found out they can help us with putting in new computers and a server into our office and helping to manage our IT requirements.

In short Everycomm are able to offer your business, like they have with our business, the opportunity to do more. They have also got a very good team behind them offering fantastic customer support and as a new customer I would recommend them highly if you are looking for a better phone system and want excellent customer service.

Our new telephone number is 01227 31 40 31 please use this number from now on to contact School News.

wishing you all a merry Christmas from the School News group

There are 10 differences can you find them?

So Christmas is upon us once again, we at the School News LOVE Christmas and cannot wait to enjoy some well deserved time off with our loved ones. We want everyone to eat, drink and be merry, but remember to stay safe.

Prep:1hr › Cook:20min › Ready in:1hr20min

1) Lightly butter a 12-case patty tin. Tip the mincemeat into a bowl and stir so that the liquid is evenly distributed.2) Place the flour, sugar and butter in a food processor and process briefly until resembling breadcrumbs, then slowly add the egg through the feeder tube (or rub the butter into the dry ingredients by hand and stir in the egg).3) Bring the mixture together with your hands, wrap in cling film and chill for an hour. Thinly roll out the pastry onto a floured surface. Cut out 12 circles with a fluted pastry cutter, large enough to fill the cases in the patty tin. Press gently into each case, then fill evenly with the mincemeat.4) Cut out another 12 slightly smaller circles and use to cover the mincemeat. Press the edges together with the end of a fork to seal. Make a small slit in the top of each, then brush lightly with milk. Chill for about 30 minutes.5) While chilling, preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas Mark 6. Bake the pies for 20 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack and serve warm. Enjoy!

Lillie Matthews from Meopham School and Kajan Subakannan from

St Olaves and St Saviors Grammar School, Orpington, have been named Senior and Junior winners of the Kent Young Chef Award 2015, after the ‘Live Cook Off’ at the Hadlow Group, West Kent College, Tonbridge.

The eight finalists: four Junior and four Senior, took part in the live final on Friday 13th November. The competition took place on the campus’s catering facilities in Brook Street. Finalists were able to use the comprehensive kitchens at this first-class catering college watched and assisted by Head of Catering, Sarah Hogben.

The four Kent based Judges, led by celebrity Chef Richard Phillips had the arduous job of selecting the winners.

The Senior winner, Lillie Matthews, aged 14, cooked an extremely well presented and perfectly cooked, pan roasted pork loin with caramilised onion, plum and cider sauce and herby scalloped potatoes.

Junior winner, Kajan, aged 12, also cooked pork loin

but served his with a sage stuffing, yorkshire pudding, crackling and mashed potato. Head Judge Richard Phillips said, “The Judging panel had a difficult job this year particularly with the seniors who all presented very accomplished and seasonal dishes. All four of the judges were very impressed with the calibre of the cooking, their technical ability and the final execution of the dishes”.

The cook-off started at 10am, with the West Kent College team standing by to assist the youngsters during the preparation stages. The college media department were able to stream the finalists preparing their dishes to the gathered sponsors, guests and parents who were

waiting in the college’s restaurant and looked after by a number of wonderful front of house students.

Judge and Sponsor, Tony Blake, Commercial Manager, kff, said “Each year we have a difficult job on our hands judging the final dishes, watching the young chefs preparing and cooking the dish helps enormously with the final decision. This year in particular Lillie, the senior winner impressed all four of us with her methodical, calm and professional approach. Lillie was one of the finalists that tasted her food throughout the process, this is a vital skill that many qualified chefs fail to practise”.

All finalists cooked accomplished dishes this year and the Judges spent over 30 minutes deliberating the winners. The Judging panel of Richard Phillips whose restaurants include Thackeray’s, The Pearson’s Arms and The Windmill, Tony Blake, Commercial Manager – kff, and new judges, Ewan Simpson, Head Chef, Rowhill Grange Hotel, Dartford and Graham Garrett, The West House, all noted how incredibly calm and organised all the finalists were in the kitchen.

The finalists had two hours to produce their seasonal, regional recipes and had to bring all the raw ingredients with them. The college provided each finalist with catering students who helped with queries and equipment but were not allowed to assist with any cooking. Produced in Kent, organisers are grateful to West Kent College for providing the facilities and also for arranging an impressive lunch prepared by students, prior to the announcement of the two winners in the college’s commercial restaurant, The View.

The QEQM Operating Theatres held their fourth open day on 7th November 2015. Local people and students from the sixth

forms and colleges in the Thanet area were all invited to come and learn about career opportunities in healthcare, specifically the Operating Department Practitioners (ODP) pathway as well as Nursing and non -registered roles such as the Theatre Support Worker (TSW) and the Associate Theatre Practitioner (ATP).

The theatres were set up to give demonstrations regarding airway safety and the role of the anaesthetic and post anaesthetic care practitioners, as well as a mock up of an operation to demonstrate all the professional roles in an operating theatre. There were also demonstrations of the equipment used in orthopaedic surgery and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery with some opportunities to try some of the equipment

There were opportunities for visitors to discuss their career options and get helpful advice from Nurses, ODPs, TSWs and ATPs from within the department as well as practitioners who have recently qualified and were able to

share their experiences as a student in healthcare and their working life.

From the last three open days we have successfully recruited local people onto nursing and ODP degree courses at Christ church University as well as recruiting a number of Theatre Support Workers who have gone on to further training within Perioperative care.

Over 50 people came to experience the day and their feedback was very positive and I hope the opportunity has had a positive influence on some of our local young people in the decision to pursue a career in healthcare.

Thanet Wanderers Rugby ClubAn Update from some of the youth teamsGirls Rugby in Thanet 2015Thanet Wanderers have provided rugby for girls for many years. Some girls have progressed in this sport – gaining county and regional honours, playing for their universities and even England Students & England women

Currently we have five girls who have been selected in the County Squad: Courtney McCleery, Louise Rubens, Milly Thurman-Newell, Mia Hillyard and Phoebe Ellcock. These girls have been training midweek for Kent and playing in-county matches on Sundays.

Girls play along with boys from ages five to eleven, after that they are in female only groups. The Rugby Football Union, England Rugby’s governing body, allows the girls to play in three age groups: U13 (years 6, 7 & 8), U15 (years 9 & 10) and U18 (years 11-13).

Matches are played on Sundays, usually twice a month and games are played all over Kent. Thanet Wanderers are in Area 3, which covers Kent, Surrey Essex and Sussex. Recently Thanet’s U15s have been playing in the RFU area cup and finished second

in the first pool round, only being beaten by a combined Aylesford /Dartfordians squad. They recently played Uckfield, East Sussex and narrowly lost five tries to four.As you will have noticed if you have recently

been watching the Rugby World Cup, rugby is a hard contact sport, but the rules and regulations are adapted for younger age groups, so that players gradually build up their skills until they are playing a full 15 a side game. So, training is very important and girls have to train, like the boys, one night during the week and again on Sunday when they have no match. Training usually takes place on Thursday evenings from 5:30 pm. Please contact me if you would like more information or visit our website: http://www.thanetwanderers.co.uk/

Wanderers won the U8 development tournament at Ash with one of our teams (photo attached). The boys were absolutely chuffed to bits to get a win (as were we) and have showed us that they are learning some great skills and applying them in game environments, not just in training. The tournament gave us a great opportunity to see what to work on going forwardsWritten by Coach Jason Deacon
