Maintaining everyone’s safety during the era of the COVID-19 virus

Over the past several months, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone has had to adapt their lives to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. Hospitals, including Brockville General Hospital (BGH), have faced incredible change to continue to keep vulnerable patients and healthcare workers safe.

At BGH, change has also extended to the construction and planning for our new patient tower. Thanks to the incredible efforts of our staff, physicians, and our contractor, EllisDon, our new patient tower remains on schedule to open this fall.

“These last few months have been a challenging time for everyone,” said Nick Vlacholias, President and CEO. “As we adapt to our ’new normal’, I want to thank our community for your support.”

“We promise to do our very best to keep you safe. Our teams are continually adapting in order to ensure BGH remains safe for our patients, staff, and physicians, now and into the future.”

On track to open this fall!

Our new tower will soon be ready to accept patients. Take a sneak peek at just a few of the features inside our new tower.

Each patient floor in the tower will feature a dining room where patients can have their meals. Pictured above is the in-progress dining room on the Inpatient Mental Health unit.

The final finishes are applied to a future patient room. Rooms will include a desk for patient use (pictured along the left-hand side) and a light accent feature (pictured along the right-hand side), which will provide a soft light above the patient’s bed.

Safety first

To reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus, EllisDon is acting on the advice of Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer and other leading public health officials across the province.

To that end, several measures have been put into place, including:

Screening all workers prior to entering the site.

Procedures to ensure physical distancing between workers.

Enhanced cleaning of commonly touched surfaces and high traffic areas.

Adding hand washing stations throughout the construction site.

Enhanced policies for illness reporting.

Provincial inspectors are continuing to visit job sites across Ontario, including our new patient tower, to enforce updated health and safety guidelines.

Construction during the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us how important our health and well-being is to every resident in our community.

To ensure the continued delivery of safe, high-quality care, hospital construction projects in have been deemed essential by the provincial government. There may have been some minor disruption as everyone adapted to the evolving safety advice and instructions from health and government officials. EllisDon, their subcontractors, and BGH have worked closely to minimize any safety risks and resulting subsequent project delays.

Key milestones

BGH will get keys to the new building on August 10, 2020. At this time, staff and physicians will begin training and orientation to ensure everyone's continued safety. Final construction elements will also be completed.

On October 24, 2020, BGH is planning on moving patients into the new patient tower. Programs and services will be relocated from the Garden Street site and our Inpatient Mental Health Program.

Construction on the new tower and renovations to the current hospital building will be fully complete by late fall.

Tower opening and patient occupancy

Safety is the most important factor when considering when and how we will open the new tower.

While we were initially hoping for patient occupancy in spring 2020, to ensure the continued safety of our patients, and healthcare workers, we have delayed occupancy until this fall.

During this time, important safety checklists will be completed, including:

EllisDon will finalize their construction, testing and certification,

Healthcare workers will conduct vital training and orientation, and

Systems and processes will be verified .

Constructions workers are screened daily upon entry of the site. 2 3
