PROMOTING WATER USE EFFICIENCY ACROSS URBAN SECTOR TO ADDRESS

    CLIMATE CHANGE

    Introduction

One of the present mandates ofUnited States Agency for International Development (USAID) is

to promote water use efficiency in multiple sectors like industry, building and municipality in order

to address the climate change in near future.

Water is considered as one of the key components to be handled prudently under the climate change

program and demands special attention. Under this backdrop Water Analysis, Innovations and

Systems Program (WAISP), an initiative funded by USAID was launched in India. It has two

    integrated components, namely:

    1. A broad-based water sector assessment to guide potential USAID/India investment in thelong-term scenario.2. Undertaking field level activities pertaining to information management, analysis, decision

support and planning frameworks linking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) activities

and constraints with climate change adaptation and food security objectives.

To implement the program on ground, USAID has appointed Confederation of Indian Industry

Triveni Water Institute and Development Alternatives Inc (DAI) as the implementation partners.

The project is being implemented in three cities Jaipur, Faridabad and Pune.

Objective of the programTo promote Water Use Efficiency across Urban Sector to Address Climate Change

Role of CII Triveni Water Institute

    1. Promoting Water Use Efficiency in Industry2. Promoting Water use efficiency in Commercial Buildings /Government Buildings3. Pre-feasibility study for utilizing municipal sewage in adjacent industry clusters4. Identification of water saving technologies in industry, building and municipality5. Information Dissemination and Capacity Building through workshops, training program

    and an international conference.

    Benefits of the project:

    1. Sensitizing the industry and builders on water use efficiency to achieve 20% water useefficiency by 2017 (In line with National Water Mission, Ministry of Water Resources).

    2. Facilitating reuse of municipal wastewater in industry and develop an industry-municipality interface

    3. Identification of implementable projects supporting reuse of domestic wastewater acrossthe city

    4. Capacity building & awareness of the key stakeholders in the city to pursueimplementation of the identified projects
