Stanton in Peak Craft Group We have been meeting on a regular monthly basis for three years and have received part funding to enable us to develop a Village Wall Hanging. As this is nearly finished funding has also ceased. However, we have decided to carry on under new conditions and with a new programme of workshops. There will be a yearly subscription of £10 and workshops will be at cost up to a maximum of £15. New members are welcome as are guests. Guests will be charged the full cost of any workshop plus a £3 fee. We meet in the Village Hall on the first Saturday in each month from 10.00 to 16.00 and our next meeting is February 6th ( weather permitting!) when our tu-tor is Barbara Cassidy. Barbara is an expert in quilting but don’t think about patchwork or bed coverings – this is very different! If you would like more information about the Craft Group or would like to come along to February’s workshop please contact me 01629 636116 or [email protected] Intrigued about the Village Wall Hanging – look out for more on this soon.

Come Dancing! During the Christmas festivities a number of people have said they would like to learn to dance, whether it’s the jive, the quick step or the waltz etc. If there is sufficient interested I will do my best to find someone who is willing to come along and teach us in the Village Hall. If you are interested please let me know by calling me on 01629 636116 or emailing me at [email protected] WI IN FEBRUARY

Happy New Year to everyone—hopefully by the time you read this , the view from the window will be green rather than white . Our February meeting is on 9th when we hope to welcome back Sally Mosely. Her talk will be entitled “ 1 million words, 8 pairs of boots “. All visitors wel-come . 7.30pm at Reading Room . Jane Martin LET`S HEAR IT FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE ! We always hear about children when they`ve been naughty .I caught the bus from Bakewell—standing room only .I had to stand next to the driver .As we got going, a little voice piped up”Would you like a seat?”. I said “ Yes, thank you “ and 2 boys gave up their seat. I don`t know who they were but it made my day to think chivalry isn`t dead after all . Thank you . Pauline Hancock

STANTON PARISH COUNCIL Because of our clerk`s understandable difficulties in reaching Stanton in poor weather, the Parish Council which was due to be held on Jan 14 was post-poned to Jan 28. Watch out for a report in next Snail. Our thanks to Stanton Estates for providing beautiful trees for Stanton Lees and Warren Carr, and to all those throughout the parish who put up tress and lights for everyone to enjoy. Your efforts are appreciated. A PAT ON THE BACK ! I am sure I am joined by my fellow Lees Road residents in expressing my grateful thanks to Nick Moor and Sid Wain , whose snow clearing efforts over the past month have been nothing short of heroic . A warm round of applause to you both , and to everyone else who`s wielded a shovel to shift the white stuff. Anne Zoyroydi . Thank you to everyone who sent us Xmas cards. This year we have sent a donation to East Midlands Air Ambulance Service which seemed a very appropriate charity, fol-lowing a recent event when one of David`s friends was airlifted to hospital following a mountain biking accident at Birchover. Happy New Year Sue and Dave Hobson .

Village Photography Competition

The results are now in for the Christmas photography competition. There were 10 entries, which you can view by visiting www.stanton-in-peak.co.uk Over 50 votes were placed, using the various voting methods we had set up and our external judge also picked his favourite. The voting became a 2 horse race and amazingly produced a dead heat. So we have 2 “people’s choice” winners, with 16 votes each. They are: Billy Watson for his super sunset and Bill Chandler snr for his smashing picture of sheep in the frost Brian, our external judge chose: Graham Barber Matlida in the Snow. Great shot of mum and child. Congratulations to our winners. Very well done. Thankyou to everyone who entered and voted, and to Brian our external judge from Cromford. Its been fun. So now we move onto our next project. “In the Depths of Winter” is our next theme. Has anyone seen any snow and ice lately? That will do. Please let me have your shots by email (re-sized as before) to [email protected] Or prints through our letterbox at Church View Cottages. All images need to be in my hands by 25th March please. As before, if you have any problems with photo re-sizing, give me a call on 636116 or drop me an email All the best Jonathan Reed

John Bernard Siddall 1896 – 1917

John Bernard Siddall was from a local farming family, and his parents, Peter and Mary Ellen, are buried in Stanton cemetery. He was known as Jack, and was their second son. He was the third lad from Stanton to lose his life in the Great War. He enlisted at Rowsley, like the others, but was drafted into the Machine Gun Corps, a new Unit set up in 1915, when it was realised that for machine guns to be effective, they must be used in larger units and crewed by specially trained men. A depot and training centre was established at Belton Park in Grantham, (the house and park is open to the public as a National Trust property), and a base depot at Camiers in France. The Corps gained an enviable record as a front line fighting force, seeing action in all the main theatres of the war. 170,500 men served in the MGC with 62,049 becoming casualties includ-ing 12,498 being killed. Jack Siddall was unfortunately one of them, losing his life on 20th March 1917, aged 20, fighting around Arras. The war diary of a friend from Birchover notes he ‘was killed by a shell at the front’, but unlike all the others from Stanton who died at the front, he does have a known grave, and is buried in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery at Faubourg d’Amiens in the west of Arras. Enscribed on his grave is: ‘There is a link, Death cannot sever, Love and remembrance, Live forever’ Written and researched by Charlie Watson
