Commodore’s Comments

Well, we have hit the time most boaters find bitter sweet. Our boats are coming out of the water and winterizing is in full swing. I am never sure how to feel about Haul Out. I am pretty sure I am ready to do other things with my free time… As soon as the cover is installed I start thinking about Launch! Haul Out is a busy time around the Club; so if you are available to help out, please contact Bob Smith or Mike Strzok. Also, don’t forget that piers must be raised also for winter.

The election of Officers and Board is after the annual meeting October 21. We have had several members step up to serve our membership through involvement of the Board. The only open spot is the Treasurer position. Please contact Chuck Cottrill and let him know that you are inter-ested. I want to thank Debby and Tom Schulz for a super Octoberfest celebra-tion. All that attended ate well, drank well, and enjoyed a fabulous band. Finally, every year the Board has the honor of picking the “Member of the Year”. I am requesting that membership submit letters to the Board on whom they feel should be this person(s). All letters need to be submitted to the Board no later than November 18th. Now it’s time to enjoy Football Sunday’s, Hors d’oeuvres Night, and breaking in our new fireplace insert! No matter what the season, it’s al-ways comforting to enjoy the Club and fellow members – reminiscing about the previous summer and looking forward to the next summer’s boating season. Oktoberfest 2013 Recap Oktoberfest 2013…the success was evident on Sunday with all the soda sales! 300 sausage links, 5 gallons of sauerkraut, 20 lbs. of potato salad, 4 half barrels of Spaten Oktoberfest beer and music by The Squeezettes make for one kick a$$ par-ty! ($1,300 over the bar kind of helped too!) Thanks to Kiki, Jeanne (Kiki’s Mom), and Baby Sarah for their help in decorating the hall, Al Peterson for making the de-lectable sauerkraut, Ray Hollnagel for his dishpan hands, Greg Zielinski for making sure everyone got their beads, and Tom Ciurlik for his assistance de-Oktoberfesting the hall. Oktoberfest has been neatly tucked away for the next hosts.:) Ein Prosit! See ya at the club!

Tom and Debby

Thanks to SMYC’ers I would like to extend a great big THANK YOU to Tom and Meg Ciurlik for setting up the back room and preparing and serving the lunch for the Hudzinski Family Reunion that took place at SMYC on September 14th. Thanks to Bob Smith for the delicious smoked salmon and Bob's special surprise for my brother, Ken, when he arrived on his 1947 Harley Knucklehead. Ken will never forget it and the fond memories it brought to mind. I would also like to thank Kris Ciombor, who helped with the serving and cleanup. The food was out-standing!!!!! Again, thanks to you all Hud and Pat

LMYA Report for September 2013 There were about 45 attendees at the rendezvous the weekend of June 21-23 at Port Washington Yacht Club this year. It has been a little scaled back from past years, but hopefully, with a little more advertising in the future, it will return to former glory days. The first event was a Friday night dinner at the Port Hotel which is a vintage building with several cozy dining rooms. The LMYA group had one room to themselves with the choice of a seafood buffet or ordering off the menu. It was a nice kick-off for the weekend. Saturday morning started with a continental breakfast at the yacht club, then a talk on the local maritime scene which over 30 people attended. The talk featured infor-mation on a big push by the local community for water safety, following the recent drowning of a couple of local young people. At this time, there is no organized and supervised swim area on the lakeshore of Port Washington. Rip currents are treacherous here and one swimmer who lost his life was a good athlete. With the low water levels, the breakwater safety ladders have become unreachable by a swimmer in the water. There are plans to extend the ladders this summer and to put in emergency call boxes on North Beach – a popular but unsupervised swim area. An education effort in local schools has been started and funds are being raised to support this effort. After a talk on the rip currents, a scavenger hunt sponsored by LMYA commenced. There was also a light-house identification contest - a sheet with the pictures of Lake Michigan lighthouses that could be identified, signed, and turned in. Both these contests had prizes which were awarded after the evening’s buffet dinner at the yacht club. There was a silent auction, then the evening topped out with a karaoke sing-off.

Jim and I got a sense of how pervasive the Water Front Safety Initi-ate was while sitting at the yacht club bar. The yacht club had a chart of the fundraising effort pinned to the wall and it showed that the community had a long way to go to reach their projected goal. But according to the yacht club bartender, all elements of the Port Washington community are behind it. As an enthusiastic communi-ty member, this bartender told us what he had learned. Depending on the direction and speed of winds and water height, rip currents form and can be slight or strong. He said education is underway to inform the community where rip currents are likely to be found and under what conditions. People are being taught to not fight a cur-rent, but to float on top of it and go with it until it fades out. I sup-

pose you can learn many things sitting at a bar, but this was one of the most useful conversations I have had, because Port Washington is hardly the only place on the lake where rip currents can occur. The other major event that LMYA is involved with in the Wisconsin Region is, of course, the South Shore Yacht Club Open House, held this year on July 4 – 7. The SSYC Grill Team demonstrated their skills by feeding hun-gry mariners breakfast, lunch AND dinner on Saturday. Saturday morning there was a South Shore Super Flea Market with all sorts of boat gear, followed by an informative update on LMYA activities by LMYA Commodore James Mergener. The afternoon saw a live auction of boating gear for those folks who hadn’t collected their fill at the morning flea market. This was followed by a cocktail hour, dinner, and entertainment by the band “Ricochettes”. If you had stayed overnight on your boat, there was breakfast Sunday morning to fortify you for the trip home. The next LMYA events for the year will be a September 14th meeting of the Wisconsin Region and a Novem-ber16th multi-region AGM. As always, yacht club members are welcome to attend and yacht club liaisons to the LMYA are highly encouraged to attend.
