23 professionals start project-based attachments in SMEs Under the matchmaking efforts of SMU and Spring Singapore, 23 experienced PMETs (Professionals, Managers, Executives and Technicians) affected by the financial turmoil, will commence 6 months of project-based attachments with small-medium enterprises (SMEs). SMU and Spring Singapore launched the Business Advisors Programme (BAP) in March this year to enable PMETs who have lost their jobs find work in SMEs. They will receive $5000 a month. To encourage SME participation in the Programme, SPRING Singapore is funding 70% of the PMETs’ monthly project advisory fees, while SMEs pay the remaining 30%, or $1500. If the SME is satisfied with the PMET's performance, they can continue to hire them after the attachment period.

Warm response for the Programme The Programme received warm participation of 300 PMETs and 90 SMEs when it was launched. The scheme is managed by the UOB-SMU Entrepreneurship Alliance Centre, which eventually matched 23 PMETs and SMEs. Senior Lecturer Ang Ser-Keng who is director of the UOB-SMU Entrepreneurship Alliance, said that most of the PMET applicants are male and average 40-something years of age. They have more than 20 years of working experience and some have even worked overseas before. As most of them worked in MNCs, the Centre has arranged for them to undergo a 2-day induction programme to prepare them for a successful transition into an SME. SMU Lee Kong Chian School of Business Asociate Dean Annie Koh said that the target is to match 60 PMETs and SMEs and encouraged more SMEs to participate in the scheme. She said if the pioneer batch of business advisors successfully complete their project attachments with SMEs and feedback is good, SMU and Spring Singapore will continue with the Programme.
