PROGRAMME NOTES

Just in time for the anticipated release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker this month, it is only fitting to welcome the concluding ninth film from the epic space opera saga by revelling in the music that dazzled the story, set excitingly long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.

With the fate of the main protagonists in the upcoming film still wrapped in ultimate cinematic secrecy, die-hard fans can relish the highlights from the much-loved intergalactic adventure in these concerts that will set the mood ahead of the film release. The concerts by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra will feature familiar themes from the films, from the original 1977 Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope to its prequel series that conclude with Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith produced in 2005.

Until today, the original trilogy films (comprising Episode IV - A New Hope, Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI - Return of the Jedi ) remain one of the most successful film series of all time. Set against

an intergalactic civil war between two political factions, the first in the film saga introduces viewers to Imperial senator Princess Leia, a secret agent of the Rebel Alliance in their fight against the evil Galactic Empire. Having stolen a schematic plan by the evil Empire, she seeks Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi for help. The movie introduces fans to the likeable droids R2-D2 and C-3PO and the film’s main protagonists including the smart-mouthed smuggler Han Solo, his sidekick Chewbacca and the heroic Jedi apprentice Luke Skywalker. The powerful Jedi Master Yoda is introduced in the subsequent film in 1980, while Episode VI (1983) sees the showdown between good and evil coming to a penultimate end.

Star Wars - Suite for Orchestra comprises familiar themes from the first film. The rousing opening fanfare of the Main Title is perhaps one of the most recognisable themes in the expansive film universe that celebrates heroism, friendship and the tale of good versus evil. It follows up with Princess Leia’s Theme that represents everything honourable and noble about the characters’ dangerous mission, building from a sombre start into a bold, atmospheric and satisfying finish.

The Imperial March is identifiable for everything that is wicked, bad and scary. At the centre of the theme is the story’s main antagonist and villain Darth Vader. In the follow-up film, Luke trains to become a Jedi under Master Yoda in the swampy planet Dagobah. This story arc, peppered with great Yoda quotes that many fans still live by today, is completed with the sweeping tune of Yoda’s Theme. Episode IV concludes with Throne Room & End Titles, when our heroes are feted by Leia for their successful mission in Yavin, a planet that hides the base for Rebel Alliance.

The prequel films Episode I -The Phantom Menace (1999), Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005) follow the origin story of Darth Vader, Luke’s biological father also known as Anakin Skywalker. It explores the power play that eventually leads to the civil war that takes effect in the later films and introduces viewers to the once influential Jedi Order. The series’ main protagonists are Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn, his apprentice Obi-Wan as well as Anakin and Padme Amidala, queen of Naboo planet.

From The Phantom Menace, The Flag Parade is a musical fanfare with bold colourful strokes that accompanies the nail-biting pod-racing scene where Anakin first displays the subtle strength of his Jedi “force”. This plot is explored further in Anakin’s Theme, an innocently sweet tune that in no time turns ominous, preparing the viewers for his impending dark side. Duel of the Fates which accompanies the big fight at the end of Episode I carries a sense of urgency in its hurried, frenetic notes as we see the big showdown between Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and the ferocious Darth Maul, a skilled warrior known for his double-bladed lightsaber. The of Jar Jar is the comical theme fit for a brave but bumbling alien with floppy ears, Jar Jar Binks, whom critics have dismissed as the most hated character in the Star Wars universe.

Multi award-winning composer John Williams’ iconic movie themes are given new arrangements for violin and orchestra in the album Across the Stars, where the title track (also called Love Theme from Star Wars: Attack of the Clones) is taken. Hauntingly melodic yet eerily foreboding, the tune serves as the backdrop for the impending tragedy that is the love story between Anakin and Amidala. The climactic lightsaber duel scene between the warring Obi-Wan and his newly-turned evil apprentice Anakin in Episode III - Revenge of the Sith is immortalised in the highly-charged conflict anthem, Battle of the Heroes.

Adventures

The Asteroid Field is a frenetic piece from Episode V that accompanies our protagonists Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca and R2-D2 as they dart through asteroid-laden space in the Millennium Falcon while being pursued by the TIE fighters following the Battle of Hoth, where the Rebel Alliance was defeated earlier. With a damaged hyperdrive, our heroes are forced to hide inside what they initially believed to be a crater of a large asteroid (they are in fact inside the belly of a giant space slug!). Han Solo and the Princess, also from the Episode IV, is the love theme that accompanies the story arc that develops between Han Solo and Leia. While the motif is used throughout the film’s romantic subplot, it is first played when the two star-crossed lovers are inside the belly of the space slug while repairing their damaged spaceship, eventually leading to their first kiss.

In In Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983), Yoda reveals that Anakin/Darth Vader is Luke’s father which leads to a climactic and emotional action scene between the father and son at the end of the movie. While Luke is fulfilling his destiny, his comrades from the Rebel Alliance find themselves on the green moon of Endor, which is inhabited by wide-eyed, teddy bear-like creatures called Ewoks. Parade of the Ewoks is a fun, energetic and playful interpretation of the tribe which lends their support during the Rebel’s final attack against the Empire. The stirring symphonic piece in Luke and Leia bursts with huge emotions to accompany the twins who were separated at birth, culminating in a poignant scene where Luke finally tells his twin sister Leia the truth about their past. The movie comes to a

rousing celebratory end in The Forest Battle, with that all-familiar satisfying scene that has seen fans punching the air and clapping their hands in joyous cinematic delight. Here They Come is originally written by Williams as a concert suite for Episode IV. The theme is subsequently featured in other films including the 2018 spin-off film Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Its Education and Outreach Programme (ENCOUNTER) reaches beyond the concert platform to develop musical awareness and appreciation through dedicated activities at such diverse venues as schools, colleges, hospitals and community centres.

The MPO’s commitment to furthering musical interest in the nation has been the creation of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO); its debut concert at DFP in 2007 was followed by a Peninsula Malaysia tour. The MPYO has also performed in Sabah and Sarawak, Singapore, Brisbane and Hong Kong.

The MPO remains steadfast in its mission to share the depth, power and beauty of great music. Its main benefactor is PETRONAS and its patron is YABhg. Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali.
